mouth like a torn pocket

a guy called richard sent me some music a while ago
and i sang some stuff n sent it back
it wasnt quite my cup of tea
but it had a certain joie de vivre that i liked
it seemed very eighties
but i didnt understand that that was its trip, did i?
i was listening to it at my daughters place in sweden
when their ears
pricked up
"daddy,THIS is really cooo-oool" they said
this is...? i say
(you see sometimes i dont know what i'm doing or
what anybody else is either)
listening to it thru a new set of ears
its a perky poppy feelgood little thing
its still got words like "inevitably " in it
so its not a total pop out
but you know
its catchy n singalong-y
if you like that kinda thing
sometimes we all do, dont we?
so richard gets all these weird mixes down n stuff
and he asks me to help do a vid
oh the wonders of the modern age
casting my mind back twenty years
the pain n drudgery and yes
the outrageous expense
of making a video
if richard had suggested this twenty years ago
i would have to have found a camera man
a lighting man
someone to synch it up
a caterer and blah blah blah
then have to shoot it
process it
edit blah blah blah
get it over to the u.s.
blah blah blah
but wow
i did my bit last night
richard did his thing while i slept n went out for a walk
come home its already up on you tube
pocket featuring steve kilbey "hear in noiseville"
go n take a look
(warning: if you hated anchorage from th'other day
you may not like this!)
but lighten up
hey richard
i think you did a marvellous job!
the song and the vid are a real gas!
good on you, my man!
stealing a feeling a feeling
revealing a feeling i felt!
oh ha ha
the eighties live on forever
thats rocknroll, children
and everythings possible

it sounds like 80s pop im more new wave but it wasnt bad, i cant believe he did it so fast, you were great, you always do such a good job!

Firstly, the song sounds great. The vocals are smooth and strong; the mix percolates in a vibrant way. Perfect for car-listening in North America.

Thanks for sharing this! The webcam footage makes it so RELEVANT. Slow Crack 2009 meets Subterranean Homesick Blues posters. I smile picturing some manufactured pop act making this same video -but with a roomful of directors, suits, caterers, makeup artists, grips, and some tech guys digitally enhancing it to make it appear shot from a webcam. Of course, their song would be unlistenable tripe...

Looking forward to hearing the whole record.

D'oh! Just saw the will be visible after approval' statement -right after posting two similar comments. Please be kind enough to eliminate one of them.

Your choice.

That was really sweet of you to help the poor kid out with his junior high school music project. I reckon he’ll probably send you a little gift or something if he passes. Fingers crossed . . . .

Yeah, it's good to try new things.

Yesterday I tried out for another

band, standard pub rock but a

chance to make some needed $. Not

sure how I did, these guys are

pro's for sure. Older w/alot of

miles, I had my face melted more

than once by the lead player.

And then today IL brought in a new

lead player, it's gonna take some

time but we can see where it'll be

and improvement. Very clean and

piercing leads played w/a Tele.

And I am still not eating meat

or animal bi-products and have

lost quite a bit of weight! I look

and feel great!!

"the eighties live on forever"

Everything old is new again. :-)

It's cute and fun -- I like it! In fact, I like it more than many of the really slick, expensive videos.

I think that new MacBook was a good purchase!

i like that kind of thing

Now you just need someone young and hip to mime it and you have a hit.
Willie Nelson aint down with the young folk ya know.

That's inevitably cool.

I wonderabout artist using Sk as vocalist as the song becomes more Kilbey than them.
Not that I mind at all.

Oh Steve, that is really nice. Does take me back to New Order and the days of dancing in the discos of Sydney, err Pitt Street Gardens or fuck some other places that I dont remember, aww only occasionally. Your voice is so charming and lovely, wasnt the 80's great! Only us'oldies' can remember what a fuckin amazing time the 80's was for Australian music and up and coming bands. I am so grateful (spelling Steve?) that I experienced it. I travelled all over Sydney in my little white Corolla full of girls to see the bands we loved. The Church, people, in Australia in the 80's was the ultimate glamour band, but with the added value of having the most exceptionally incredible music. Steve Kilbey and Marty Wilson Piper were the most divinely handsome men, the objects of many female fantasies and probably voted the most desirable in the whole Australian music scene. When you add to this to the most intoxicating music and these 'dark purple velvet lightening' shows, their following was huge.

killa! loved the tune, put a smile on my face, now if they can only get that art decay project finished, falling for you sounds like the darker side of the 80's to me...completely opposite end of spectrum. stay well.

Just viewed it and really glad your had a re-think after your daughters told you how they felt about it. Yes, it's got that 80s feel, and I really enjoyed it. It's also got that certain something about it that I reckon even if the listener didn't like it, they'd still end up singing stealing a feeling.

Well done SK for helping Richard and well done Richard for lyrics that work well together and being astute enough to know SK was the right man for the job!!

You really scraped the carbon dust off that star and made it shine. With your voice, it's a gem. I'll have that one swirling in my head the rest of the day.

The painting with the four women in the background - is that new? Looks nice.

nicely done :)

bought this from itunes a few weeks ago. loved the title. the music wasn't my cuppa tea at first, but it does grow on ya. love your delivery and lyrics, and the pun of the title. shades of the 80's for sure. anyway, it's been plugged into my traveling mp3 player, along with Art, Man & Technology - which is FUCKING SUPERB.

amazing how quickly this online stuff comes together! i think the best moment is when you whip off the glasses - the gloves have been dropped and now it gets serious. Kinda like when you glove-slap an aristocrat.

Very cool paintings in the background too.

Flying west today, but will try to keep up w/ the blog while away. Catch ya in a week, TTB.

Steve... You are the King Midas of rock music. You turn everything you sing into gold. Anyway, everything should be told: the instrumental part was great too.

I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing this video when I get back home!

P.S. Curb show is a crazy comedy - seen it a few times but yesterday's blog has re-pigued my interest...

Atha said...

Who wrote the lyrics? Was it titled first, If SK wrote them? Will you sing over my Space Madness?
http://futurebuddha.net/atha_music
Pick one, it's all kinda instrumental. I love the electronic SK we've been getting from Mimesis, Martin Kennedy and now Pocket. Perfect voice for this genre.

How funny that you say it's not your cup of tea cuz it could easily blend into the narcosis ep or slow crack or just about any of your solo stuff. Very good pleasant song.

Excellent tune. Your voice sounds great with it. You are getting a lot of mileage out of your webcam ; )...who would have thought one of those babies would become as crucial as a guitar to a musician in this day and age.

Great work!

This is George (Alien Skin) and I have to say I had a great time remixing 'Hear In Noiseville' for the Steve/Pocket iTunes single release.

Being a long time fan of The Church and especially Steve's songwriting, it was a pleasure to strip the song down to his bare voice and remix it Alien Skin style.

If you're interested, Richard (Pocket) has allowed me to upload my remix of the song to my MySpace.

Listen to HEAR IN NOISEVILLE, (Alien Skin remix) at http://www.myspace.com/alienskinmusik

Thanks for the great tune Steve!

Richards Pocket and George's alien skin mixes - good stuff.
Its really cool when other artists dig your work too sk and kind of you to let them mess around with them.

xoxo

btw George - 'Send Me An Angel' was one of the few of those type of 80's songs that "I" really loved
