yeah
i write
i type
i'm that type
i remember streams of notes and words
i'm fluent in bass guitar
moor than you can dream of it
my busy fat little fingers
im waiting for you backstage
im a carpet
im a fridge full of exotic beers
im a ashtray
im a gig
im a venue
im a parking lot
im the headliner n the support
i sing the body corporate
i sing the songs that make the whole world cry
i sing like a beast and i bellow like a ram
i kilbey
no one else
could
would
wanna be
i kilbey
in the blackened room
with the loud noises
with all the gizmos n gadgets
to bring my fucking songs to life
my song of song of songs
i need drums i need strings
i need reeds
i need some air
here i am in the gig
here i am outside the gig
here i am drivin' away from the gig
here i am forgettin' the gig
here i am then
kilbey kilbey kilbey
you cant get enuff of me until then...
you suddenly have a little overdose
whoops
kilbey overdose coming thru
too much of a good thing
its too rich
im too sweet
im tout suite too
no one on the street
the drums go thump thump thump
the stuff all gets moved around
someone does the vacuuming
someone buys a ticket at the box office
outside the trees sway in the breeze
who gives a freaking frigg about any of this
the made up world
the strings of words
the fawning ninnies
the angry bouncers
the bored barmaids on their mobiles
the luggers n loaders
the crew
the others
me
my brain
my fingers
my throat
what do i have that anyone wants to see
some mad old half aussie hippy
who smoked a joint n got hooked on strawberry fields
forever n forever n forever
still in buffalo
i meet kristinas sister
it was 100 years ago i spent the winter here
yes thats right
one hundred years ago in some long winter
man she sure had some wherewithal
she had the knowledge thats wonderful
maybe she became nk in some mad mixup
where my songs collided with my lifey life
and until i didnt know what was going on
and
i imagine scarlet kilbey will shake this world around
i imagine eve n aurora dispensing love n mercy
n elli n minna on top of some heap
oh my eyes ache
my uneven steven eyes
im 54...can you really dig that number
because i cant
by my calculations i should be older nuff to know better
adam franklin is a nice cat
so is lee n mikey
i love listening to em each night
you should check em out
still in buffalo
i wander round the olde neighbourhood from that song
its hard to tell without the snow
maybe i'm just a ghost now too
a hundred years is a long time until its gone
i fall asleep in some hundred year old starbucks
in a comfy armchair sucking a soy hot chocky
i start to dream of my little bedroom in bondi
i sit in my chair waiting for my wife to come to bed
the house is so quiet
the children all asleep n tangled
my wife so slim n pretty
my wife so young n playful
my wife all blonde and tipsy
i reach out for her white white skin when...
steve
steve
hey kilbey....!
ive dropped off at the wheel
weve crashed into the charts at 1660
weve driven thru a field of magnetic poppies
grant is with me
steven.....he says astonished
i was having the strangest dream
i look around all my pals in the van
kraal-man
ricki ticki tavi
markus
the ice berg guys
the little lord of course
simon polinski at the controls
hes adding more reverb to something
a load of middle aged guys swamp me
hey steve i saw you in 1853 at that valley forge gig
hey steve i saw you on the mayflower
hey steve i saw you at the court of william of orange
the music all plays backwards
it all sucks into itself
ziggy sucked off into his brain
i remember to remember that much
and i check into some room
outside is some dead city
people speaking a freaking dead language
tonite the church dead in necropolis
says the poster
the dark streets full of fear
i dont wanna play
but someone pushes me out the fuck on stage
my dad says
slim how do you know what to do?
i turn to my dad
dad please be big and warm n smelling of cigs n old spice
a sign says
no readmittance
a sign says
staff only
a sign says
please wash out your mouth before singing
aunty lou says hah! he's no singer.....not him...
someone unlocks a door and the crowd trickle in
a plague of middle aged men
i drown in their tertiary degrees
they throw their credit cards at me
but i have no swipe
they call out in the fog
all of us lost
all of us had the best deckchairs on that titanic
i had a cabin with a lovely view of some desolated parking lot
its canada on a saturday night
someone buys drugs on de yonge street
someone faraway milks his cow outside saskatoon
someone on the prairie listens to priest equals aura
much further south
the falls keep falling
the boys limber up for their soundcheck
jorden brebach plays snippets of down to the cardboard
over the p.a.
no strings attached
no certainty either
clint eastward
crowdy rowdy head yates
bang bang
someone shot thru
it was me
not you

I know this is no consolation:
but I recently saw Hermans Hermits play at the Ram's Head...just before your show
Peter Noone joked that they've been playing there for twenty years
he really had a great sense of humor and tremendous energy...he's 64 (I'm sure he's not traveling to his gigs in the same manner a you though either)
but imagine...he's been singing Henry VIII for almost 40 years, why's he still doing it?
you still have roughly 20 more years to sing under the milky way (now's probably not a good time to joke about that...sorry)
but really...imagine singing the same music for 40 years
at least your still making new, totally original, five star music
there aren't many bands that have had such long careers still making records of this caliber
your tired, with some serious melancholia goin on
and you look really pissed in that picture
xo
mmmmm...exotic beer
Wonderful blog. So funny.
Thank you again for the tour and the music and the art. Thanks for everything, in fact.

ya'll did u know the
timebeing reads
backwards just as forwards!
was that intentional k?
rock the world...
i'll still be waiting
Rock on Mr Kilbey. In one hour I will be sitting in the backyard summer evening sun with smoky tobacco and cold liquid hops...sitting beside my love while listening to #23 as the light fades and the fire flies surround us. peace
ooh, lucky Buffalopes, sounds as if your pump is primed boyo...
fire away
I read this blog everyday but never respond. But the blog entry today was true genius. Just an amazing read that captivated me. Well done.

You are becoming more active...not such a dim receiver these days.
Hope you got a chance to check out the falls
Everyone has one eye higher then the other,
It is kind of weird like we were put together a bit off kilter,
Like the side sides don't really match up,
Same thing we feet, hands and breasts (real ones anyways).
One ear is usually higher then the other,
The big guy said fuck it put em' together anyways..it's good enough for a human.
Dear Mister. You make me laugh
and that is worth more than
(almost)
a job would be to me
right now.
Maybe as you get these flashbacks
(I get them you know)
and your wondering that since you are old enough to know better and
you know your doing this for the bare essentials and your fans
You are getting the chance to see it all again through
straight eyes
this time.
(What do you know, we're both more or less straight)
Its all comparitive...
Look after yourself

Hi Steve - Since I saw you at the HoB in Chicago a couple weeks ago I've been reading this blog from time to time. I didn't care for the format at first but now I like it. Just took some getting used to and I think see the method in the madness. My question to you: Are you really as unhappy as you seem here? Life isn't THAT bad is it? Maybe I am misinterpreting your comments. For what it's worth I think the Church is a top tier band even if you guys don't get to tour like one. Wishing you and the The Church all the best. Keep making (and releasing!) music. (How about a live album?) The Church legend continues to grow... Rock On, JAW
I love this: "yeah
i write
i type
i'm that type"
Made me laugh out loud.
Think I'll borrow it, if you don't mind, and make it my own personal tag line.
Many blessings...
i look in the mirror
astonished at what i see sometimes
my lines have lines have lines have lines
why do we need these reflecting panes
what if there were no pics, no vids
if we never knew what we looked like, how would we look
i married a younger woman
sometimes she makes me feel younger
sometimes not
some nights i wonder why me
she could have chosen anyone
then the mirror in the morning
god
how awful
she doesn't seem to be aging
the gap is widening
how is that possible
what kind of cruel trick is this
i'd laugh but i can't spare more lines
this is enough for now
and lest i try to forget my plight
my heroes are dying too

the latter inspired me to start painting at 40
to hit the yoga mats just this year
(was already vegan)
saw him in chicago few weeks back
flew up for a weekend of meditation and music
marveled at his energy
his devotion to his passion
so often we let that slip away
some never find it
the lucky do
lucky me
maybe, baby
lucky you
"someone faraway milks his cow outside saskatoon
someone on the prairie listens to priest equals aura..." Wow...this was/is me! I'm not sure I can really say what I'm feeling except that I remain amazed at your ability to "connect", to perceive things on so many levels... Thank you for your words.

I will now receive my dose of i.Kilbey Thursday, in the darkness of the Ridgeview Playhouse, in a land far from where I live. Just made all arrangements, signed page 47 this evening. Hope the Tralf goes well for all converging there; awaiting my rendezvous with the band two nights hence.
Full moon out tonight; moonlight through the pines down here in Georgia, after refreshing rains finally came to quench the thirst of this green earth.
Safe journeys to the Hive City in the East tomorrow, Magician.
In anticipation, uninvited but arriving, drawn to the siren call of wood plank, strings, drums, gizmos and gadjets conjuring forth - the magic.
JJ
Dear Mr. Kilbey,
I wrote my first poem today - for you.
Be nice, I'm a cat
I look out the window
the cotton soft clouds dappled across the sphere
they remind me of a bird I once knew
I knew this bird before it knew my desire
Innocence, how you tempt me to taint
Honesty, could be ugly or quaint
One way or another, you'll make me bleed
Today or tomorrow, I will plead
take this memory and don't let it echo
Burned brightly after the crash. Nice!
My young 72 year old mum sees me login into your blog today and asks me all about the church...and I think wow my mum is digging the magic vibe of the crunch. Your magic extends further than you can ever imagine. The lovely images of nk will keep you going...that trip into the sunset isn't far away.
I love your type! :)
Im pretty sure i saw you in 2029 at the local mars bar and you were complaining to the audience "dont make me play that f**king hit Operetta again!"
xox
ps have a great night JJ
Mike - go see The Re-mains band while they're in Canada
cripes sue!
i can't have read that right can i?
wer'e actually playing the mars bar in worcester with damo susuki on vocals july 18th.......
how weird is that?
and as for steve being miserable or unhappy?
you get the real guy on here, with views and opinions based on genuine experience!
....and sometimes not.......
fine by me.
i doubt that youd like it either
O fuk has some 1 really not heard why u called it priest=aura?
And ur nose is worse than the high eye, druid: there's no wonder u don't do profile fotos, fella!
Steve, you DON'T have uneven eyes! Your head is clearly tilted in that photo, which gave the impression of unevenness. That's all it was! Our anon friend says this shit to try to get under your skin or to irritate you into responding. Fuck him and his failed two-chord new wave cover!
Good one. Looks and sounds like you finally got a little rest (somehow). I'm happy for ya. God bless you and the boys, and now roll into Irving Plaza and show them why you're the best fucking band in the world! El momento excelente. Your fan, Louis

I was at Buffalo last night. Damn. You guys wore out this 33 year old first-time church concert-goer. Simply stunning! I brought along a friend. You have a new fan now. Thanks for a great evening, and thanks for playing Day 5 and Happenstance!!!
homesickness is a bitch, isn't it....
love always....
I've always liked "days of drowsy pleasure in the afternoon pleasure/we drift together, we drift apart."
Hope you've enjoyed at least a tiny part of the tour. Ride it out in style. We all follow you for a reason.
steve just talks about good days or bad like any human, thats what makes him real and i enjoy reading this, we dont expect him to be in a good mood always, i can relate, being away from home can suck, im about to go out of town without my husband and im not looking forward to it :(
sounds like you're getting jaded on the road SK.... not much longer friend. you know we love you for coming over here! Nick Fiction
Wow!
loved today's steve...i appreciate that you still take the time to give us something to read while you're touring. you should probably be getting some much deserved sleep instead...but thank you.
take care
mark
Okay, so you guys absolutely blew the fucking roof off the Tralf in Buffalo. My ears are still ringing this morning. Sound was much better than Hamilton (the acoustics in Ham sucked) - i could feel the drums kicking me in the guts, the bass grabbing me by the lapels and shaking things up. Full on! The Church in absolutely top form.
Kilbey pulled out all the stops, laying on the banter, busting out some new stage moves, somehow altering time (i swear the entire set went by in 5 minutes).
Peter pulled off some amazing understated wizardry. While waiting for Tim for the encore, he sat behind the drum kit to noodle around. Kilbey called out random songs, and Peter drummed them all up without hesitation. Then took his usual place and, during Hotel Womb, played his guitar with arms crossed and hands reversed, all while making it look ridiculously easy.
Marty shredded with such fury that several more strings were sacrificed to the goddess of intensity.
Tim could very well be an octopus - one minute he's using sticks, then banging on the cymbals with a tambourine in one hand and stick in the other, then playing with a stick and some sorta moracca in one hand, etc.
It wasn't a large crowd (judging by the silent streets, no one lives in buffalo), but there sure were a lot of hardcore church fans - i'd say 70 or 80%. That made for a really great atmosphere.
What an amazing fucking show.
Looking fwd to ottawa on saturday.
54... so what? That's a drop in the bucket. Not even that. 54 trips around the sun. Not even a second of Geologic time. Even less in Universal time. You're a baby unless you're counting all your past lives... Every day you are a new born thing if you drop the history.
so many people appreciate what you are trying to do most importantly you appreciate what you are trying to do
keep on pushin through the electric night awlright
an unashamed psycofant who lives in the shadows of the celtic sea giants.
I'm looking forward to a big long warm bear hug from a sweet funny gentleman.
Oh Stevie Stevie <3~~ Seeing your blessed asses TONIGHT in NYC~ Can't wait!!! :D :D :D
Can someone please tell me what they're playing on this tour? Surely somebody here has a setlist or an idea or anything...
Great show in Buffalo last night. Was my third time seeing you boys and this was definitely the best yet. Thank you so much for putting your all into the show, especially adding "Buffalo" to the set. My buddy, who has seen 100+ shows from others, said it was the best show he'd seen from anyone in a long time.
Nurkin you need to go to a church forum to find this stuff out. the ssetlist has been like this (if you're lucky)
Tantalized
Block
Day 5
NSEW
Happenstance
After Everything
Almost w/You
Month of Sundays
Deadman's Hand
Pangaea
You Took
Operetta
UTMW
Reptile
An Interlude

Hotel Womb
Thats really cool Andy! And, when Damo played in Oz a few years ago, he was joined by Omar from the Mars Volta (one of Marty's absolute favourites!). How's that for a theme?
