Hey! All the best with the tour as you Gig across America. Conquer it! For those interested, legendary Flying Nun / Kiwi Musician Chris Knox (ex The Enemy / Toy Love) suffered a stroke last Thursday (aged 56) and is recovering (in a comfortable state) in Auckland Hospital. All the very best to him.

twas nice to say hello before the show last night. you seemed a bit perplexed (dazed and confused were the words you used) but i knew it would be a good show when i saw you soundchecking deadman's hand and it sounded great.
I have seen the last 5-6 church shows in sf and this was definitely the most rocking show ever! you looked fierce and in control even after the stall (which you charmingly joked about)
really nice to see the front man showmanship sans bass on operetta dancing around with mike in hand. too many transcendant moments to list. really i mean it.. thanks. thanks. and thanks.

Just watched the mini gig on KCRW and loved every minute of it. Excellent performances and a great song selction. Reminded me of my one and only The Church concert (so far, hopefully) in Copenhagen, 2007. I really wish you guys would release a live album.
It was a weird night. SK dressed in strange "vintage" cutoff shirt w/patches ("cash" and "Nirvana"??), Marty lookin' like Rasputin's bro. I apologize for the drunken idiot behind me who kept opening his trap. I apologize for the idiot who insisted PK shake his hand and proclaimed loudly, "You're my favorite band! I drove all the way from L.A.!" Powles beat holy hell out of drums with gong sticks, Marty shredded beautifully on Rickenbacker bass for "Deadman's Hand." Kickass version of "You Took." SK more fit than most 20-somethings. Yoga bass playing. PK elegant as ever. Technical issues a drag (why does this keep happening???) Honorable mention to Adam Franklin's amazing set. Good luck in Oregon.

so I went looking on the net.
Ended up on a bass players’ forum and found this suggestion.
“There's a white medical adhesive tape with a fairly glossy outer surface that makes great 'bass tape'. The string slips off it very well.
Wind it from the tip back to get the overlaps the right direction and it lasts all evening. It gives a little crispness to your pizz sound too. :)”
And another comment about it:
“You want waterproof first aid tape - the stuff Jake is talking about. It's got a slightly grippy surface to it - just like your finger. Cheap. Quick. Works.”

The San Francisco show was great no matter what you say about the technical problems and loud mouth fans.
Wonderful set list and great rock star poses from Steve! The songs have all been imbellished with a different fill there, or extra verse here, maintaining the spirt of the originals but adding so much new, exciting 'explorations' of the songs. On just about any song and you've got four guys soloing but all coming together to make the tightest band in the world when it all falls in place.
Two observations:
Steve, you bellyache so much here about how you don't like having to come out of bondi to play those damn songs and rock out for a few weeks. But when I saw you close your eyes last night and lock in with Tim, you LOVE IT. You couldn't hide how into playing that music you are if you wanted! You alwasy like to distance yourself from The Church but it seems you are really at home with those songs and in that band.
The Church have no fancy stage show, no costumes or special effects. No jumbotron U2 circus needed - the performance IS the show - nothing else required.
Way to go Steve.
Second, Peter stole the show. *Yikes*
Yes, this is your blog and we come to read your thoughts and generally give prase, so you may not be thrilled but your bandmate was in orbit last night. It was like Peter was channeling Jimi Hendrix...from another universe..and backwards...with more effects and even light years more psychadellic. If you watch the KCRW webcast from a few days ago, the solos he played, especially on "You Took" are just a framework for what he did in San Francisco. I mean, he took the playing not to just melodic and technical levels, he was on the verge of inventing and entirely new way to play. whether he recognizes it too or just takes it for granted, his playing was 'transcendent.'
By the way, who were the dozens of people with passes to get backstage to meet the band??? Was there a contest? We waited around to get an autograph as Marty usually comes out and chats a bit but it seemed it was 1987 again and everyone wanted to meet The Church.

I bought a ticket to the KC show on June 19. It was just gonna be me groovin to my favorite band with no partner distracting me. I was so looking forward to the whole experience, from driving up from Texas to watching my fave band and meeting other Church fans. Alas, life intruded and it isn't meant to be. My oldest daughter (17) was stricken at an early age with a rare hip disease at the age of 6. Unfortunately the damage that it did has prompted a hip replacement surgery. It's scheduled this week in Houston and daddy needs to be there instead of visiting blissville with the Church.
Posted on the womb about having a ticket to give to any Church fan who emails me and received no responses. If anyone here wants to see the band at the Voodoo Lounge in KC, the offer still stands. Drop me an email and I'll get it in the post ASAP. Enjoy.

There's a sterling three star review of # 23 in the Sunday Chicago Sun-Times and a recommendation for people to see the upcoming show. The review has glowing approbation for all four band members. The song "Operetta" is put in the same class as John Lennon's "Imagine". "Space Savior", "On Angel Street", "Deadman's Hand" and "Pangea" are also lauded. The reviewer also mentioned the greatness of "After Everything Now This."
Astrological perspective on technical difficulties was the Mercury square to the Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron conjunction. That's over now and Mercury is in Gemini which should really ease this type of thing going forward (let's hope).

You may not have taken anything from my enjoyment of the show in San Francisco, but I experienced something that maybe you won't know: a complete moment of bliss.
Your posts talk about your ability to transcend during a show. I never recognized it before, but I suppose that's why you don't make eye contact with your audience. I've seen you guys five times now and it's seldom you look at your audience except when you're walking off stage.
I'm not offended by that. In fact, if that's what you have to do to play the sets you do then more power to you! But I am truly saddened that you would get no enjoyment from the energy and joy I felt during your show (which culminates from 30+ years of making amazing music).
Regardless, I was tantalized from the first song all the way to the end; despite any technical mishaps. Any time you guys are in town, I will be there. I see that the San Francisco show may not chalk up to much for you on a personal level, but for me (the long-time fan and appreciator of your art) it was a blessing.
You don't have to have it together all the time. Shit happens (cliche', cliche'). Technical stuff happens. Look at the amount of monitors and amps you guys have on stage. It's amazing any of that stuff works. You played with your hearts. I could feel that. Your audience could feel that. I would rather see a Church concert wrought with gaffs and technical issues than any other show on earth, because you play with your heart.
I had the pleasure of briefly saying hi to Tim while he was running about getting the sound-settings in order. It was very kind of him to come by and say hello after he was done with his setup work and talk about the last decade of amazing work you guys have created. I hung out after the gig hoping to at least say hello to you, Marty or Peter, but we were immediately ushered out after the show. Now I see how little the San Francisco show meant to you. I'm really sorry for that. For me, you guys play sounds, speak poetry, and play music that is more than worth the dollars I paid to see it. And Untitled #23 had filled my recent days with music and joy.
I hope the rest of the tour lives up to your expectations. If I'm traveling to another city that's on your schedule, I'll definitely drop in again.
