I didnt get to say goodnite, you rockstars disappeared, after all these years it's still so hard to get to that goddamn place, but anyway, you guys were amazing and now it's all over and I'm in dispair, what else is there!!!. Playing lying down, that's a first, but sk, dont make a habit of it ok haha. My fave new song live is that one you play electric guitar on about the cute panda, yeah it's a killerrrrrr.
Thanks for the music, thanks for everything and have a great night at the festival, wish I could be there:(
Now to deal with the wicked withdrawls for months n months n months n months...dont stay away too long ok:)
Love Amanda
oh yeah, tell that kid he has a new fan haha

Yeah, and you gave us fuck-all on Friday night didn't you? Do you have any idea what 27 dollars does to my little family's budget you superior fuck?

Yes it was an appalling venue, yes, it was a crowd made up of the usual mix of two-headed church afficionadoes and drunken yobs, but what were you expecting? Which genius makes the decisions about venue and marketing - someone's guitar case? I note that you were sure to set up those ubiquitous and squirmingly embarrassing trestle tables groaning under the weight of dusty merchandise. Make it look like a school performance in a church hall and that's what you'll get I suppose.

The opener was blinding and things were looking good; the crowd was attentive and relatively well-behaved, notwithstanding the opportunity some of them took during the new stuff to visit the lav. You limped through a couple of numbers and then things went to fever pitch where you actually stretched and then suspended time with song number 4 or 5.

But then you fucked it all, spat in our faces, sneered like you owned something. Yes, you introduced UTMW and sucked every last positive feeling out of the room. Selfishly stripped your band-mates of their energy and dignity.

If you don't want to play it, DON"T FUCKING PLAY IT. Whatever you do, just don't pout and posture like you're a rock-god being urged by a stadium full of lighter-waving fans to play your old stuff not your ground-breaking new stuff. You were playing to a seedy seaside bistro loosely peopled with 71 adults who were offering you way more generosity than you deserve.

Get some humility druid.

a bit over the top with the negativity and bitterness, don't you think? forget the venue you are in, forget those in the crowd that annoy you, try to put a little reality in your expectations and focus on the music. if you focus on the music then it can only be a positive experience unless you are not a fan of the band (if that is the case then why go?). it is, and always has been, great music so i will never understand this kind of negativity. and you think sk lacks humility?

Man,

Anonymous of 10.24AM,

Why don't you just let the 99.9% of the gig-goers revel in their high?

I don't have any more time in my day to rebut your black, tunnel-visioned crank, than you have dollars in your budget.

And SK, for your info, the concensus from the post-gig banter last night (and Friday night) was that the set list was, to put it simply, "one of the best" ones to date. Afficionados and trans-fans concurred.

You guys rocked.

Humility is NEVER (ever) lost.

I cant see why there is need for such vitriol anon but have to agree that Steve shouldnt do that song anymore. It must be irritating beyond belief for him, to hear the ubiquitous pissed punter crying out for UTMW.

Heydaywasyesterday, is this message for Steve or me: "if you focus on the music then it can only be a positive experience", because that's precisely what I'm saying to the great man.

Anon 1103, I too lack the time in my day to be doing this, but Steve warrants feedback for some of the less edifying things that he does whilst under contract. is he beyond reproach is he? I'm sure he would admit himself that he dudded the troops on Friday night. As for the consensus of the post-gig banterers, it's hardly Exhibit A when post-gig banterers are by their very nature blindly positive.

Linjo, this is the most tragic thing - there was no pissed punter crying out for UTMW. And that was much to Steve's disappointment I'd venture as it rendered his little "I hate this fucking song" spiel hollow and embarrassing.

News of The Church's return has resonated to the USA. Small venues rule. The fact that Under The Milky Way was voted the best Australian song compels you guys to play it every night. It's a thousand times superior to any AC/Dc song.

Rock on and veg on.

You didn't meet me you fuckwit, I'm sure I'd remember someone who so clearly has had a frontal lobotomy.

Oh, and how do you go with multi-syllables? Probably not well after struggling all those years with ADHD bordering on mental retardation. How's this: YOUR OPINION DOES NOT COUNT AS YOU ARE LIVING YOUR LIFE VICARIOUSLY THROUGH AN AGEING ROCK STAR.

How naive of me to think that I could've voiced my disappointment on this forum. Oh well you all know the truth, as does Steve.

heyday2day said...

anon, since you addressed me.....obviously it was directed at you. i seriously find it difficult to believe that because a song you didn't want to hear was played, your tantrum and negativity was warranted. again, it seems a bit over the top and overdramatic. but then again, you got some attention from it

Anon at 12:42 pm, why did you go?
Lookin’ at the prices of concerts lately $27 is cheap!
But you can’t please all the people all the time.
Sadly, I wasn’t there so I can’t offer any real input
but I’ll go with the consensus.
Awesome job love: I’m proud of ya!
(hugs)

I hate being in this dialogue with you fools heyday. I can't think of anything worse. I am not looking for attention. I was leaving a message for the great man alone - how else do you suggest i communicate with him? I didn't ask you to respond and stupidly looked back at the comments before I went off to do other things. Now I'm locked in this spiral of abuse that you yourself are extending. Just leave it and I'll be off.

Sounds as if you had a good time, SK -- maybe a bit too much of a good time. But what the hell, we're all allowed to have too much of a good time once in a while! Hope it goes well today and for the rest of the Aussie shows.

And then get ready for the US tour, complete with those half dozen Ohio gigs. :D

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
uh, anon at 12:45 PM, you did voice your opinion on here -- apparently several times today. Where you are naive or delusional is in your apparent belief that your opinion is fact. It isn't, just as all the other reviews of the gig/gigs here are the opinions of the people writing them.
You didn't enjoy the gig. That's too bad. But not everyone sees and hears and feels everything the same way. What you perceived as a major slight by SK, may very well be seen as very humorous by several others and not even noticed by even others still. Your opinion is your opinion, and you are entitled to hold it dear, but throwing a little tantrum because others aren't heartily agreeing with you is mighty damned silly. You did your bit -- you voiced your displeasure -- so what's the point of harping on and on about it? I would think if it was so awful that you would want to forget it as soon as possible.
Anonymous said...
And one last thing, it wasn't that I didn't want to hear UTMW, I was happy to hear whatever Steve was HAPPY to play, including UTMW. HE wasn't happy to play UTMW. Do you get it? My point is this: why bring everyone down with reluctance?
Oh forget it.
Steve, the songs were like heaven. Be pride of them, just like everyone here who loves you is pride of you.
And I agree with Amanda: please don't make it a bit of your habit, playing lying down.
... I wish I could have witnessed it, must be great.
I've heard nothing except praise that The Church rocked on both nights. I think SK is the only one who can answer you then anon.
I find it weird that people would leave their spot when a new song's being played.
Amazing setlist I hear -Tantalized, Block, Pangaea, Deadmans Hand, Happenstance, You Took, Almost With You! ...did you really play A Month of Sundays? wow
xxx
Anonymous said...
i went to both shows...and the setlist was one of the best in a long time....and I agree...don't play UTMW and almost with you etc...no one really wants to hear them.
Well done on two great shows guys...the reviews have been outstanding
Went to East Brunswick Club. Walking into venue while support act were on was totally repelled by over the top volume and intensity of bass levels leaking out of door. Went to beer garden. Inside as Church set up we struggled to find a spot in the room where the aural assault was not battery of the ears. Finally found a small position where bass didn't crush the mix. Church come on - you are a great band, terrific songs. Almost With You was haywire -was Marty or someone - couldn't see due to full backs deciding to stand up near the front - deliberately playing the wrong chords in rebellion, or was it just out of tune? Many songs struggled to come out of aural anarchy with bass and kick drum dominating to a doof-doof level. After about fifth song things settled in somewhat but never really found harmonious intertwine that should happen. Had to leave half way through because we just don't want to go deaf or suffer tinnitus for the rest of our lives. Guys - Simon - whoever - you just don't need to be that loud to make a great rock impression. Sincerely. What is the point? Machismo? Acca Dacca ideals? Subtlety is blasted.
If you hate the fact that you wrote hits that people liked, and bought with the bucks they worked and saved for, and this made your career work for you, and that sometimes people like to hear the older hit songs but you're sick of them, preferring to play newer fresher songs, then don't play them. Or else play them out of of giving, and put your heart and soul into them, out of the act of giving. Maybe rearrange them to keep your musicianship stimulated. Don't play them and fuck them up. That don't work any which way.
steve, looking forwards to sydney sunday, just got my ticket, can't wait. hope you and the band are well, melbourne by all accounts sounded great.
i've been playing coffee hounds non stop in my car, it's another exceptional work by an exceptional band, i loved the songs instantly, and i'm sure kate bush would enjoy your version, great vocals by the way.
did you ever hear her last cd ariel, it's very very good.
Sitting over here in Downturnsville,Jealous County Europa. 27 Australian Dollars! WOW. I would forego this weeks ration of sweet potatoes to grab one of those tix & cherish every moment of it, wring out every emotion from every sweet chord. UTMW or not. It's the new stuff i wanna here. The here&now. No time for regret, for struggling to appreciate or criticise one song & then wishing you'd spent your hard earned money on more potatoes or something. You lucky bastardoes!!!
Please come & play overhere & brighton up our greyskies!!
Londinium, Hamsterdam or Bear Lynn . D .
What's with fucking volume at the East Brunswick gig?
I know that Tim is a drumming genius but the fuckwit "mixer" has obviously deafened himself over the years and can only feel like he's a man if the bass drum is crushing our rib cages with it's ridiculous volume. All subtlety lost. Shit venue. Over sold to the max. Sack the lot of 'em. And the Church? Love em but "SAVE OUR EARDRUMS".
