ive had that horrible song in my head
that one about sally
jesus, sally is a horrible name too
unless your sally forth...
you know
theres so much of little value out there
you can imagine how the philistine dross
burns the delicate sensibilities of someone like moi
i get to the pool
a guy there is telling me how his 9 year old son has formed a school band
theyre playing oasis songs he says
why? i say (shocked by the sink-ronicity)
because theyre easy and simple to play
(exactly)
and the kids understand the words
(i'm sure they do)
and they have a great singalong factor
(just like baah baah blacksheep)
you should see them he says
dont think i will be attending, though unfortunately...
i have been always been naive and cynical simultaneously
which are 2 nasty traits in a man
but as parallel personality defects
they are truly abysmal
which is why i dont have any friends
because im stupid and smart at once
who can tolerate that?
i am at once incredibly cruel and incredibly kind
i make every individual in the room the subject of my disinterest
look i love and loathe myself in equal measures
dont you?
(actually steve, more people choosing the loathe option)
thats ok
i have met many people
who loved me so much that....yes...
they had begun to loathe...
and of course...
you guessed it
as usual
there were those who came to loathe
but ended up buried deep in love
i love to sit in my high lonely tower
sending down my bitter and envious yet truthful bile
theres a guy whose music i loathe so much
i would rather listen to liam sing a sarah maglockwin song
than abide one second of his puddingy syrup
hes a local guy
hes doing 2 sold out nights at a lovely venue with orch
god wouldnt i rather be swanning around on that stage
dressed in a tux
crooning a few numbers
and cleaning up the bucks
rather than bashing it out
with my crew of evil wasted rockers
in some beer soaked bunker at a million decibels
prob'ly to 50 people and making 5 dollars petrol money
am i envious of this geezer?
well of course i am
but one note of his music or voice
makes me feel so restlessly compelled
to escape its vicinity
lest my poor sensibilities
drown in a mawkish quagmire of sickly goo
ha ha
i was sitting in the car waiting for my kids
and this big islander guy i know approaches me
hey he says
you like rock music dontcha? he says
eeeerrr that depends...i say
he says
dya want this ?
and he thrusts a copy of a free cd of said geezer
that the local rag had given away one sunday
i dont fucking want that ..i hiss at the guy
i dont fucking want it either says the guy
well dont fucking give it to me ..i say
i thought you fucking liked rock music ..says the guy
i do....and that aint it...i say
well you know i like rap and i fucking hate this ..he says
have you listened to it..i say trying to push it back in his hand
the guy sneers ...accidentally...he says
he seems lost for words
i fucking hate music like that
we bicker over the ownership of the record for a while
i needed him to know
that before i accepted and destroyed this platter of noxious tripe
that this was not what we rockers listen to
particularly in view of the raquet painkiller is making
he seemed to think that me being a rocker
this music was falling under my umbrella
when in truth its more like a mix of
the captain n tenille
meets barry manilow
after hes just consumed 8 buckets of fairy floss
the rapper dude wasnt buying it
and finally with a menacing look
he threw the radioactive bit of schmaltz into my car and legged it
there it was
sitting accusingly on my dashboard
the kids hadnt come out yet
i timidly plucked it from its sleeve
stuck it in the cd player
and was just beginning to recoil in horror
when the door opened n a friend jumped in
what ya list'ning to , killer ? he asks
and then
oh
oh no
you dont think i was listening to this...
i was just...
i was just...
my friend gets out
backing away from the car horrified
at what he'd heard in my car
no no
you dont understand ..i miserably wailed
its not....
on the painkiller front
we rehearsed again yesterday
the painkiller crew are mean n desperate rockers
the volume was incendiary
the rock was turned up to 11 n a half
maymi was scorching and blistering
von ryper droned and strummed
bowden tuned in alien magnetic dustdevils
powles pounded and pummelled
i throbbed and ranted
exceeding all possible preconceptions
painkiller is now a living band
full of cut throat violent rock n roll hoodlums
ready to take no quarters and
give no prisoner
listening to us
is shirley the antidote
A FIX FOR A WORLD IN PAIN
PAINKILLER

LMAO.
Once again I find myself in agreement with ye olde killa. There's so much music i can't stomach. Can't stand wrap and hip hop. Don't like country. Revile whiney white guy stuff (a la nickelback). In fact, for many years i'd reduced myself to listening only to the church and related churchy projects, simply because i knew it guaranteed quality, it wouldn't talk down to me, and there were so many layers to discover that i didn't need anything else. It's only in recent years that I began timidly to branch out again, thanks in large part to this good blogge and the recommendations contained therein (and passed along by blogge friends).
I'm eagerly awaiting my pre-ordered copy of painkiller. Hope the t-shirt fits.
And i know i said it before, but i've gotta say it again. That live clip of Maybe Soon is wonderful - a really heartwrenching song. Beautiful stuff killa, and well delivered. I've been revisiting the myspace page and playing that one again and again.
I know of whom you speak and I'd say that there is more than a hint of cocktail lounge about him.
Anyone banging away on a piano and singing mournful tunes about inner city dives deserves your derision.
Bring on the pain killer.

"i once accidentally watched american idol n swedish idol"
It's no use trying to explain what bag you're in to somebody who's just so same. Most music they put into the public sphere is straight up bedwetter, Killah. I think it's a feat of science and strength that you and your evil crew have been plugging it in and gettin' done for so long, yo. You can't front on that...
I hope you Painkillas are doing a T-Rex cover.. ya know we want it.. we want it baad.. come on Steve pleaase!
Discussing music is great for this blog. All commentors like Sk's surreal, spiritual and existential literary missives but his taste in music is equally fascinating. What's worse the music of Oasis or the media's moronic praise of Oasis. I exclusively vent my anger at the media. How many years have they saturated us with the likes of Michael Jackson, Kiss, Ac/Dc, Jay Z. Kanye West, 50 Cent, Ozzy, Van Halen with Hagar, Prince, Mannilow, Smiths overkill (even though I like Morrissey), Madanna, Outkast, Britney, Jessica Simpson, Bono, sting, Rick Springfield and 500 Magazine cover stories about Led Zepp's one 2007 concert. It's all overkill and is as poisonous as Poison. If "The Church" had 50% percent of the publicity of Britney's "Beaver shots" they would have made a few million.
You don´t have any friends. A friend jumps in to your car (in a school parking lot?). In two different posts that could work, but not in the same post.
sk,
funny you are.. i've said that alot lately. i admittedly like a handful of oasis tunes, not champaign superscrubber, but i won't list them becuz no one is going to listen anyway. i know when i took guitar lessons i learned she's electric. and blur, i really more than like blur. not the hits, but they have some damn good songs going on. as a ton have said, none of this comes close to the church's music in any way.
i've been on a robert pollard/guided by voices kick and am looking forward to seeing his band boston spaceships here. bob's songs are so short but groovy me thinks.
but the painkiller! arrrgh i am in anguish i am not rich to fly around getting to these most important gigs. i can't wait for my cd & T.
;]
Blow up the Gallaghers and drag them away!!!
Steve I cant imagine how you could ever describe yourself as naive!
I am not ashamed to admit I still love Def Leopard Hysteria.
Spring is in the air up here!
Linda
please forgive yesterday's comment on my apparent suicide pact, Tropical Storm Mary just blew by thank you my Lord, phew for now at least, who knows what will happen if i have to wait another painful year...

Ha! We islanders are persistent cheeky buggars you know. Pretty easy to guess who you meant too .. he has a female orc, yes? Makes me cringe too. I dont get it, dont get him, dont get them.
But Killer,no Sally. Instead I had this cover song called 'Wrong Road' playing in my head all afternoon .... it came on Radio FBi at about 12.45pm with a big plug for Karmic Hit and the EMC. AND, NO EXAGGERATION... DID IT SOUND SO SO BEAUTIFUL! Hope JLKs subcription list jumps after this.

i can barely put a sentence together steve.....but i do try.
as i said before...some of your best writings garner fewest comments....
often because ape-like creatures such as i have no real frame of reference......
on occasion the work is so impirical we feel anything we have to say will be inconsequential, insubsantial and inadequate.
ohhhh....my head hurts now.......
I just bought a ticket for the Painkiller show ...i hope it's a sell out for u guys..
i'll repeat what i said on yesterday's blog:
~my "blowasis" two cents~~liam's voice whines and he couldn't carry a tune in a paper bag.
and i remember when blowasis first appeared, all the critics were hailing them as the next beatles.
**pfffttt** as if.~
i'm usually pretty tolerant, but oasis makes me want to run down the street shrieking. i cannot STAND liam's voice.
"PAINKILLER

can't wait!!!"
lotza love....
I like rap as long as it's not about ho's and bling.
...and another thing that really gets up/on my goat is the fucking awful music clips that get aired these days, especially with rap songs...all tits and ass and shit like that...that's why i very rarely watch music shows...'rage' is good but i can never stay awake late enough to watch it and i always forget to set the video to record it...
for god's sale steve if your blog was posted at 7:03 am what time did you get up to start work on it, are you one of these individuals that think sleep is overrated???
sleep is good, i like sleep zzzZZzzz...
love always...
funny...just went to itunes to check out what new releases came out...and guess what??? we can all pre-order the new oasis album...what timing! just while they're fresh on our minds! you can hear a snippet of a new one...no sally and no liam as far as i could tell...see they're already off to a better start...
take care

Long tall Sally?? - I always thought Macca did a good job on that one!
'parallel personality defects'?? it's natural I think to have seemingly differing sides to one personality, that's what makes one real, human, interesting.
i must confess the (only) two Australian bands i absolutely love, worship & revere are the Church and Cold Chisel...incongruous I know...though my focus/interest in CC is for the songs & musicianship (piano playing) of dw, just as i love the songs & musicianship (bass playing) and singing of sk. I don't care for CC's lead singer one bit. Yet i still follow dw and buy his albums. my primary interest in CC is their early period, pre-east, including the early demos & out-takes, when dw was writing all the material. Songs like 'Rosaline', 'One Long Day', 'On the Road' mean the world to me, as does breakfast at sweethearts. I love chisel's first album as much as Pet Sounds even. (but not as much as Seance)
Which brings us to the man with the tux & the orch - he has built his career on the foundation of continuingly reminding every interviewer & 'good weekend' liftout that he's been living in Newtown since 1987. Well, one of the reasons he was able to live in Newtown since 1987 was simply that a lot of the older 'working' generation were dying off, quickly. Cancers and cirrhosis were commonplace. I know because my dad was one of them. They all worked at the old brick yard in st Peters and may dad made it a virtue to work to make 'the other man rich'. Fair enough, he worked hard, good ole dad. Way too much alcohol & cigarettes for that lot. My dad's body caved in too, many of his old Newtown/Enmore/St Peters mates died before him throughout the 80s.
So now this git has moved in and has made a virtue of his iconic Newtown status. Not a sin in itself but like you say, his stuff is marshmallow, flacid and lame, dweebsville - no passion no depth no attitude no rawness no nuthin'!!!
A piano-playin' songwriter moved into Kings X in the late 70's and wrote songs about the plaza hotel and sweethearts cafe and dixson street, whatever, the music was primal and real. the piano-totin' Newtown guy is a fucking twit, and you have every right to be fucked off, if you are!!!
Yes, so-called popular music sucks, but I would just like to add that there actually IS a lot of lovely (even exiting) music out there - you just have to search for it, and Amazon, as well as the review sections of music magazines such as Uncut and Mojo are great for doing this. Black Heart Procession (The Spell, somewhat Church-y), The Gutter Twins (Saturnalia), Joseph Arthur (Our Shadows Will Remain), Iron And Wine (The Shepherd's Dog), Devendra Banhart (Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon), My Morning Jacket (Z, Evil Urges), Death Cab For Cutie (Transatlanticism, Narrow Stairs), Air (Pocket Symphony), etc.
I mean - yes,Oasis are dull as hell, but why even THINK about them? Q magazine can live in their own little dream world, where bands like Oasis are hyped endlessly. I don't buy this magazine 'cause I loathe it, but I do skim their review section courtesy of my local library, and sometimes they make laugh. I remember that they gave Coldplay's X & Y a 5 (FIVE!)star review, which means it's a MASTERPIECE. Yeah - right, Q - some of your brainwashed readers may buy it, but I sure don't.
Iva Davies !!! ?
As usual Thomas is corect. What happened to Q magazine. The once excellent Q is now at best periodically decent. Uncut is pretty good and Record Collector is very good. Classic Rock and Mojo are on a par.
we sent review copies to ALL of 'em brien!
a pointless exercise.
I agree, Brien - Record Collector is a very good music magazine, too. And they actually gave The Church's Uninvited Like The Clouds a 4 star review.
I am sorry that I missed your story about Kathleen.
"Kathleen, Kathleen, Kathleen

Hey, wouldn't you like to bring Painkiller to San Francisco? Much more fun than Tom Petty in Golden Gate Park...who books those damn Outerlands festivals anyway? Radiohead was nice & loud, though.
Dreadful crackers all over the floor. Tempus Fugit & so do I.
"painkiller is now a living band

I need to go to this so much.... to whomever is holding the cards, please release me, let me go
xxx
Hey Knot I could hear Radio Cabeza and Tomas Petty from Casa Balboa! I didn't go - $85?? I'm saving for my island holiday...anyway...I'm sorry to have missed Los Amigos Invisibles, they certainly are great fun. Esteban in San Francisco is a mellow vibe that has happened and will repeat. Maybe Maymi can convince Esteban to come with him upon the return to SF.
I am going to Lima....
Then I am gonna fall from heaven and crash on your Beemer!!!

love always...
the dog's disease, hh? oh no ;(
I am suprised that as a musician you don't appreciate a lot of different music styles. Mind you I hate a lot of todays music too. But I do like metal as much as I do like The Church. Maybe I am psychotic or maybe I am open to a lot of things. I find you can tell a persons personality by the kind of music they like. I'm usually right too.
when in truth its more like a mix of
the captain n tenille
meets barry manilow

You mean Painkiller isn't going to sound like this? Oh no! I'm absolutely crushed. :-(
You would look adorable crooning away in a tux though. ;-)
i just discovered this the kilbey blog.thanks fer havin me. As a youngster I used to go watch surf movies at the local theatre (the carefree-west palm beach, its still there!)every few weeks. This is where I first heard the church. Tantalized was the backing track for a hot young surfer from OZ at the time named martin potter. Great movie but as i sat through it i kept reminding myself to read the credits at the end to find out who the hell that band was. Ah, the church! A few years later when milky way hit #7 here, I had damn near either wore out, scraped melted surf wax off or dried salt water off those the first four church cassettes. back in those days I didn't surf or get stoned without the band right there with me. So yes, it's funny how you remember someone you've never met.
Round about that time cir'89-90, I walked into a bank one day and theres this fella with a key chain and he's rattling it around in his hand, real nervous like. I notice that the chain is the aussie flag. what gives pally? He tells me he just spent 6 months in oz and the only reason he came back is ta get the wife and kids. This was his last stop, the bank. I looked at this guy like he was god as he headed out the door and said, "get outta the states while ya can man, shit there's nuthin goin on here!
That story - is one,if not THE biggest regret of my life to this day. Funny how someone you never met manages to stay with you.
I'm 47 now, been married since '92 and the kids are grown. Just last night, as we watched the morbid path of hurricane gustavo toward new orleans I asked my girl if she had any phobias? Frogs, she replied. Me? she asked. Man in the grey suit. The very next thing was to fetch the linens from the dryer out in the shed. Open the side door, walk down the steps, stop. CANE TOAD. I moved from west palm beach coastal florida (where toadies are plentiful) to central and very inland florida four years ago. This little toadie, which my sweet has somehow conjured up is the first I have ever seen since we moved here. I still dream of moving to oz but not to feed the fish.
