ive never met martin kennedy
ive never seen him
or spoken to him on the phone
hell
i aint even ever emailed him
i wouldnt know him from adam
however he and i have created this very nice little record together
oh its a lovely record
unlike my painkiller record it is not self indulgent jamming juggernaut
it is not space rock
it is not harsh or wild or heavy or anything
its kinda easy on the ears actually
its not difficult to understand
theres 13 songs altogether
mk is mixing it with someone in melby
jlk provides b vox, choirs and spiritual guidance on all things vox
miranda jk does some singing on one track
mk always providing simple subtle songscapes
faraway voices when youre not expecting em
little sounds halfway between a voice and a trumpet
little trumpetlike things commenting in some alien language
like on
*my will be yours*
a jazzy late night bleary eyed creature
electric piano
haunting stringvoiced voices
sk comes in
worldweary and tired
my will be yours
you will be mine
i will lose all that i will find
the music rolls away from his words in sad waves of memory
the trumpet voiced sprite joins in
half mocking half sympathetic
you can almost hear a familiar word in there
it segues into
*stretch into the stars*
which is a slow burning piece
gradually gaining a theatrical momentum
sks sings
the night you sold me
i was frozen like the stars
you might have told me
that our love would last
jlks voices curl and whisper like malevolent spirits
the song becomes a swaying tower of voices
then
sk whistles his lonely theme
in some dark autumnal euro cityscape
mks guitar playing throughout
is meticulous elegance in simplicity
it drones and chimes and tinkles and soars
a master of subtle arts mk has learned all his lessons well
never overplaying his hand
his music is glowing in mysterious openess
pop music which is anything but.
a master song architect
these pieces drip effortlessly from him
never sounding forced
never sounding tired
his music is familiar but completely his own
he has his own mojo going
its not a rockstar ego me me me brassy blast
its a craftsman
only his craft is honing the most subtle backing tracks
for someone like me to sing upon
like *another place*
another place another score
im a stranger at your door
go the words
piano and violins
a squirmy little synth
the choruses becoming lush
at the end a kinda key change
and a new affirmation
but it ends on a bluesy feel
*uh i dunno*
actually rocks pretty hard, baby
overshot my sarky (sake?)
awkward old malarkey
sings your humble hero
and lo the bass doth throb
what you wanna do asks the falsetto chorus
uh i dunno replies bewildered sk
*thought of leaving*
another smoulderer
if you were really like you said
i'd put an arrow to your head
and i'd pull the string
everytime i sing
the songs have something of a showtune feel
compounded by trumpets which often appear
playing jazzy solos and pissing off again
*all is one*
has semi religious bent
and lover warning his beloved
that he is her only hope of salvation
and hinting at his own buddha like aspirations
while mk provides an almost western ambience
feedback loops tamed sweeten the electronic haze
those half voice half trumpet things return blowing/singing
a mournful melody
2s an illusion now
i sing
spirit come and fill me now
spirit come and take me now
as the music changes gear into a coda
its lovely stuff indeedy if i may say so
*love increased*
is another wide screen biblical number
ghostly voicestrings like heat rising off sand
the wedding feast
the love increased
the wedding bed
the fire fed
i intone in a patti smith-ish poem at the end
a girls voice singing a lovely melody
the trumpet appears in echo
kahil gibran stuff i guess
a time of joy
pure unalloyed
a time of peace
the love increased
oh
i almost believe it myself
it goes down very easily
i can tell you
*the other place*
(as opposed to another place)
has mks characteristic morse code blips in rhythm
simple subtle melodic gorgeous
his soundscapes are a pleasure to wander in
they inspire words like rain inspires flowers
*friends are gone*
the saddest song
a piano a melody
electronic phase shifting haze scrapes by
sks voice desolate weary
theres always someone hiding behind you
and i dont understand
the lie of the land
all the music exactly where it should be
accoustic guitars strum away
its all immaculate
wonderfully conceived
brilliantly executed
mk has provided moody wonderful music
i tried to match it with some singing
i think this is lovely record for lovers
for enjoying lonely bittersweet fruits of love
it is guaranteed to be an appropo soundtrack
night music
but day music too
music with lots of places to get lost in
thats some of the songs
anyway

Sounds lovely. :-)
Don't answer if you don't wish to (as if you would! haha!), but as I was reading I wondered who chose the song titles?
sounds simply and utterly gorgeous SK!...where do I get me one of those?...have a smashing day!..love,as always, gen xxxxx
I want to buy this bastard!!!!!!
Tell us when and how and more.
And what about Painkiller? I want that prick too.
Most excellent news SK- I'd better get myself to the Rodeo Beach soon....feeling...a...little...faint *-)

can't wait fer these rekkids!
Will it be this year?
Didn't you used to say that talking about your music could only demystify it?
;)
They just keep coming... I can't keep up. Working on a lovely accompaniment (spelling check) to the Killer portfolio of magic.
Still trying to get hold of BW2B.. and Beside yrself,,
matt davison

Oooh, I love the sound of this record alot sk. I can't believe you've done this recording without even meeting or talking to that guy! Thanks for the sneak-peek today. MK better organise a cd launch here, with the one and only on vocals of course...pleeease
Love fromprincess
SMILING..from ear to hear..,to 'n' from.. here!...can't wait Killer! xo
Steve, you're a tease. Can't wait to hear the new records. I'm DYING here...Thomas Thomsen, Denmark.
Steve, I've never known anyone else who can create such anticipation for an impending album like you.

meeting people is sooohhhh 20th century
He comes in singing...stoned, immaculate, where out on the perimeter there are no stars.
When will it be released?
Sounds like an incredible project, killa!
"music with lots of places to get lost in"
Really love that sorta thing. That's why your music accompanies me on every journey. Hopping the pond to do a couple training seminars in europe next month, then taking off for a bit of a journey. Mimesis will definitely be on the pod for that one, and a several more choice albums, as well as other sk spacerock recommendations...
:-)

-ps- thanks so much for the link Craig. Bless your fiend-ish heart. Just downloaded it - jesus, its a beautiful song... the vocals are sublime, the music subtle and enveloping... gotta give it a more listens and go deeper...
when is this available?
beautiful Steve!...this is a pleasure to read..but my stereo is starving.....Soon?..it sounds insanely brilliant...
SK,we want the music,so we can dream, instead of working for a while...tell us when you are gonna release it,and i'll ask the boss for some time off,to disappear into the garden with the speakers on the lawn...x
Put a track on your myspace site pretty please?
Matt Davidson you must obtain "Beside Yourself", it is arguably the best CHurch CD from my rigid perspective(It's very ethereal, mesmerizing and reflective). I hope the new CD is half as good as Isidore, then I will be enthralled. I hope SK sings all the time. He's too dynamic of a vocalist to do "spoken word" CDS. I am probably the only commentor that did not enjoy the 2007 spoken word CD. I love every other Church and SK CD. Last night "Unearthed" permeated my abode with lush, mellow, audio intoxication. The "Easy" CD single was great too with the accompanying live tracks performed with stellar perfection.
you're all very welcome........it's a fantastic song!!
i consider that phrase "all is one" to be very special
at the end of all this in some other realm if i'm asked to summarize my existence or describe what i've learned here
perhaps even the elusive answer to the sphinx's riddle
beautiful one ,SK....xo
there is magic in getting lost
and gravity in staying there
Ah-ha! There! see?
You're getting excited by it.
That's all it takes.
Such a luvverly description! And just in time for some dark otherworldly autumn music, too. Perfect for the underworld.
hey fiendds...
just came across a track called Fall Away by SK and Peter Koppes....
Anyone know where/when its from?
Killa?
ryan
What a year it's going to be!! Thank-you SK!!!!
Ryan - Is it Margot Smith? Fall Down? I think SK & PK were both involved in that, but there are folks here who'll know far better than me! Hurts me to say it but true.
And Matt if you can't wait for ChurchMerch to come back on I'm sure Nick at Heyday will have both. Great site for all Church-related stuff but no doubts less dosh for the band.
HAPPY PAY DAY hollyweird!
Art
after that description,i'm gagging for the new cd! parts of the description reminded me of 'And The Glass Handed Kites' by Mew,one song blends into the next unbroken throughout the album aswell...on a different matter, and i know from when we spoke before that you're not exactly a fan but i went to see the Hoodoo Gurus in Nottingham last night and they were great! and filled the venue-Rescue Rooms-so i'm sure The Church could pack it to the rafters!...and therefore should play in Nottingham next time!;)
I'm backing The Choice in Nottingham campaign.
Oh, and Happy B'day Jonny.
If you'd put your birthday on your Myspace page I would've done it in a more timely fashion!! Cheer up and get some cake down your neck!!!
xx

Hey Dave - no, SK on vocals. never heard this one before.
Ryan - I'm sure if you put that on the womb you'd get an answer within seconds!!
fall away is an early church song
we cannabalised the outro
for the chorus of already yesterday
fall away was actually recorded for osah
but canned for its blatant commercialness
there also exists a demo version
love
sk
ah just listened to 'all is one.'
what a brilliant collaboration.
Your voice over MK's exquisite guitar playing and his now vintage sneer drum timbre.
just wonderful
cant wait for the rest
jean
oooh sk when you talk about your own music, i just get giddy.
r
good morning Mr.Kilbey!...a lush Saturday morning,to you!...can't wait for the music!...xxxxxloving it!and you,and my coffee,on this sleepy morning,as always,gen xxxxx
Hi sk, "pinch-punch first of the month", and what a special month it's gonna be! Your birthday, gig in Melby (well that's special for me anyway ha ha), gig in Brissy, The Church starting their new recording (right????), release of "Painkiller", wow, it's all too much!!
Enjoy the sunshine, sunshine!
love from your pal, Amanda
Amanda,
Here, I'm gracious for your updates.
I arrived in the San Fran bay area in 2000, only to sense the flight of The Church who exit stage...
They're missed here and it must be so nice.
Hmm, about his calves: have you noticed if he shaves them?
Art
A lovely labor day weekend to everyone!
"fall away is an early church song"
Thanks druid. :-)
Very cool to stumble across a rarity like this. Like being an archaeologist, digging through layers of echoes - specially when the reverb comes out in already yesterday (one of my favorite early church songs, actually).
ryan
The All Music Guide is very informative but inauspiciously vacillating and convoluted. In the recent hard edition of the book a "musically challenged" reviewer only gave Priest=Aura a paltry 2 stars. Yesterday, I went to their website, printed a glowing review of Priest=Aura and noticed the much better 4 star rating. They dig all the Church's CDs but they can't be forgiven for only giving "Hologram of Baal" and " After Everthing Now This" 3 stars. Both are five star gems. On the bright side they repeatedly state that The CHurch is still getting better and better with age all the way up to El Momento Siguiente. SK, The Church and Jeff Beck become even more refined with time akin to vintage wine. It's a three day weekend for us Americans and tomorrow I have to sit amidst 40,000 screaming baseball fans. Zanax will be my chemical God !! Sorry, I just remembered, THIS IS NOT MY BLOG!
Art? you're naughty!...don't think there could be anything as smooth as SK's magic,though...xxxlove,genx xxx
Nice and hairy, as a man should be!
...perfect,SK!..you got us all going now!..mix it,twist it,do what you gotta do...then release it,asap...please??..../cw
Just checking!! Ohh, I made a naughty comment?!! Most men on bikes here shave their legs, just an observation. genx..I have a continuous search for such evocatives...
Brien C,
Steve's voice makes my heart go thumpity thump spoken or sang.
Art
Art...I never understood the "hairless man" thing......I don't know who originally said it but,i always liked it when my grandfather used to reminisce about the swing and dance halls of the 30's n 40's..he'd say"when women were women, and men wore hats"...love to you!..mmm and the killer voice is a real heart thumper,Yes!...couldn't deny that, my sweetArt!..love,genxxx..p.s. am off to a dinner party tonight in a highrise,on the river,to observe a fireworks display,to mark the spring...jets,and music, and the rare air..exciting stuff!
Hey Esskay...
Whatever happened to the fall Magnetic Strip Electric Tour in the US? And why am I being punished for writing my life story just for you? Mary and I are not going to get back together this time so please help me not lose my mind once again. I can't take much more of this. It hurts!!! Oh yeah, Happy Birthday to me, the one and only nothing...
mjnjr
Steve is the music, no doubt about that my dearest Genx...Sounds like you'll have a stunning night!! I'm missing our fleet week, the fly=bys have been cancelled! gasp. My blue angels have been mysteriously complained about...Maybe they buzzed the Trans America building too much. Please remind me of your city?
Me, it's a heatwave of a Friday night. sigh. I'll need the rest for the upcoming weekend! Cheers to all in Austrailia...may the spring keep you warm.
Art

Art...am definitely going to have a lovely night...there's somethingso electrifying about fireworks...new years eve,to wash the old year away....the spring festival,to symbolize rebirth...and so on...luckily, where i live, the society and govt. are cautious, but not too tainted by world events, and we can still enjoy the jets fly-by...there is always a big glimmer of hope for the human race.......as long as we keep the music, the love and the dance...i believe that anything can be achieved...love ya Miss Art! xxx genx
started reading your blog today and had to stop...i don't want to spoil the surprise my ears and soul are in for...release the cocksucker already!
luv tim
interested to know more about your place and events.
i feel relatively unscathed here
the city will be closed to traffic over the golden gate and the bay bridge
anyway...we'll have a Heyday along side ya! Music in the Golden Gate park and and a huge Art fest in Sausalito.
I'm saturated with new music Steve, thank you for giving so very much of it. It's so exciting that you're making more! I'm a patient person...I'll wait.
what's this, the more you change the more it's the same sort of thing?
'we have to be the change we believe in'
I'll avoid who said that, I like it though.

"music with lots of places to get lost in"
Steve, that is EXACTLY what I crave from you & what you deliver
Sue xxx
as craig1.618 mentioned earlier, you can hear a track here
www.allindiaradio.com.au/downloads.html
It's unmixed and I'll probably get a serious arse-kicking from SK & JLK for letting an unpolished gem out of the box, but I liked it so much I couldnt help but let it slip out! The album will be mixed October / November and it should be out very early 08.
I'll post more tracks as they progress through the mixing porcess.
- Martin
Thanks Martin, gorgeous track. I hope the only thing that kicks ass is the music :)
