Can't wait to hear it Steve....and you know I love the Mellotron, we got Tim using it all over endless intermission...glad it made it to Spacejunk safe'n'sound.
Wow - sounds fantastic! I CAN'T WAIT!!!!
Mellotron - wow - talk about a dream...
Believe it or not, I've been listening to a lot of 70s Genesis and King Crimson lately. God bless the Mellotron!!!
Bring it on!
Can't wait Steve
I'm actually concerned. The reason I love SK and the Church and SK's solo CD's is his fantastic voice. Arguably the best rock vocalist in rock music. A mixture of David Gilmour, Richard Wright, Bono, Jim Kerr, John Lennon, and Eric Woolfson who sung "Eye In The Sky" and "Time" for the Alan Parson's Project. Mellotrons are very cool and so are The Church's stellar and vital guitar riffs. Sk's song "Keeper" from Dabble is a classic example of his briliant and effortless vocals. The instrumental CDs are fine but the vocal dominated albums are sublime and wonderfully refined. My spelling sucks I'm in a rush !
me am happy for you and timmy, but me wood think me being there with you physically in the studio wood make for 'a' better magnetic vibration and/or better solo album don't you think...
The Shit
ps. me am still butt hurt...
Hollywood
God I can't wait to hear that!! I'll let Matt D do all your P R and provide any chairs, but I PROMISE I will provide you with the Jazz when you're in Auckland for starters, so don't BYO for F's sake!!

Well New Zealand Fiendss, it's confirmed!!
SK plays :
Wellington - San Francisco Bath House Thurs July 26
Christchurch - Al's Bar - Fri July 27
and Auckland - Transmission Room Saturday July 28.
Oh well Nevet's jazz at the end of the tour from me anyway. It's more expensive than a Church show mind! $60 seated. worth every penny though.

Sir Timpany Powles - the man is worth is own weight in gold.
Solo - please mister, can ya get this one to rival the glory of Unearthed ?
I hope the solo album has the "wolf" song on it.
Bring it on. I need some new SK magic.

Go Steve
I look very forward to hearing it. :-)
Fantastic!
But PLEASE don't let Tim mix it!
I love his drumming but his mixing technique sucks!
You know he'll go for that swamp mix where y'can just about hear the wonderful stuff but only if you really struggle and concentrate.
He even buries his own genius drum parts - just distance mic em, Tim, it's a piece of piss! Jimmy Page told me that! "Piece of piss" he said...
YOU mix it, Steve - please!
NOT a slag-off of Tim - I'll say it again: I LOVE his drumming; it's so fuckin inventive and different: genius at times.
But the mixin, mate...ah well...
You'll be sorry when the mellotron goes out of tune every time the tempreture changes, dude.
can't wait!
I have procured and purchased each of your 'solo' records several times, in numerous formats...can't wait to get Earthed again as a little chip you inject into the dermis; or Remindlessness in liquid form...
...or even something 'new'.
(new? You mean in the same way that Mohenjo Daro was new when some cats dug it up in the nineteen twenties???)
Just spent a few days (and a fortune of sweet eternity) in Amsterdam, so I'm catching up on your Socratic monologue...
...I must say I enjoy reading the comments here. I've even 'met' some nice 'people'. Spirts. Ghosts. Whatever. Whenever I read 'em I always have Shakespeare in the back of my mind:
Puck said...
Alas! He cannot hear us! Too far gone in his starr'd reverie, his lugs all stuffed with sounds past, his senses dull'd to the birdsong of this day's glade
Robin Goodfellow said...
Put a sock in it, Puck
Banquo said...
Time Being? It woz 'im wot did it! It woz 'im! Call the Auld Bill!
etc.,
i'm not 'avin' that nonny-mouse!
timbo is the best producer i've EVER heard.
i wish i could get him to do our stuff!
oh, that super-dense wall of swirling sound!
with MELLOTRON!!!!!!!
yum.
andy L.
leitmotiv!
in space?
~
Producer - yes! Tim has great ideas!
Mixer - no! It's just a murk n ya can barely hear the brilliant stuff goin on.
There's a reason that Steve deliberately stopped Tim from mixing Uninvited, y'know...
verdelay - true, true.
and some of us commenters - shadows are we...
"If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumber'd here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream "
anonymous who mentioned the 'murk' issue,
i agree that the Church has had some pretty major sonic issues in the mixing and, in particular, the mastering stages (!) of 'FY' and 'ULTC' which have detracted from the beauty of the actual songs and musicianship...
however, I just don't have enough energy to raise that issue today and maybe we'd better just let Steve have a good "creative milieu" for a few days while he finishes his solo masterpiece...
we'll come back to this one later, mate. (save it for a rainy day)
sorry malc,
i think timbos work on FY is awesome.
the density is physical.
it is the antihesis of that horrid, sterile studiobound feel most folk are used too today.
i strive to create a similar 'murk' on our recordings!
tim's the man, he's been the catalyst in the re-invention of this band.
these guys are the best on the planet.
trust 'em, they know what they're doing.
they want it to sound that way.
and so do i!
contraversaly yours,
andy L.
oh goody Goody GOODY!!!! knowing that there's a new sk album or church album coming up is like waiting for christmas as a little kid...you know it's coming but you can't stand to wait for it...GOODY!!! i'm so pleased that your muse is smiling upon you...
-The Hellbound Heart
andy,
i hear ya mate - but go no fuel in the tank to stay up typing in front o' this here screen.
you can be assured i will give ya a very long-winded and boring reply at some future point on this sonics stuff.
peace.
i can't wait~~anxiously awaiting!!!
:) :) :)
Tyg's In Space - now THAT was murk!
Some great stuff, but y'could barely hear it as it struggled in the swamp mix!
I love Tim's drumming so much - I wanna HEAR it, man!
Seriously, Jimmy Page DID tell me (in a general sense, admittedly!) how the Bonham drum sound was captured. Distance miking so that it sounds like an actual drum kit in a big room, as opposed to close miking when all y'get is the stick hitting the skin and none of the resonation from the rest of the drum, was the main component!
I accept that Tim WANTS his drums to sound compressed n flat and hey, it IS up to him, after all! But it's such a damn shame when his drumming is so fuckin fantastic yet y'have to struggle to hear the inventive brilliance of it.
But fuck all this!
The best news is that Steve and Tim are doing stuff that's so good it's making Steve himself so excited about it.
Can't ask for much more than that, eh?
And I will take what I'm given like the fanboy I am - but in an ideal world, Steve wouldn't let Tim mix it, heh-heh-heh...
I can't believe what I'm reading. I'm tempted to call floortom a troll and be done with it. He's so far off the mark, it's laughable. Is this the same guy who gave ULTC a 2 star rating while spelling SK's name wrong and not having a clue about who was in the band?
While FY was clearly mixed to achieve a certain effect, and brilliantly so. I can't hear what you're talking about regarding ULTC, EMD or EMS.
You're complaining about the mix and the drumming in FY?! Jesus, it was the drumming on "Telepath," "The Theatre And Its Double" and "See Your Lights" that makes those songs stand out for me.
Wow. Just, wow.
-z
What a tease.
John Garratt
Zebob,
Steve himself hated the FY mix so much that he removed Tim from mixing duties as a result. Personally, I can see what Floortom was getting at re. the drums on that album as there is a lot of compression on them. But like Malcolm Arkey earlier, I haven't got the energy for this.
Zebob, Zebob...I knew who was in the Church when I saw em in 1982 and I know who's in em today. Complain about Tim's drumming? Never. Don't think anyone on here has, would or could. I've played drums for 23 years and Tim's the best and most imaginative I've heard in the last 15 of those. Wish the mixing on FY was clearer so I could actually hear more of Tim's drumming? Yes. I do like drums to sound like drums, I have to 'fess.
But did you see them in '82 with Jimmy Page?
It's difficult to believe SK would let Tim work on the new album if what mckay (or is that you as well?) says is true.
See, Steve? You opened up another can of worms by sharing some good news with the masses.
-z
How come the dates for nz not up? Sue away? Good venues mattd?
new solo album! happy happy

UMMM...Tim is actually a good mixer..People may forget he mixed AENT and that was crystalline. From memory an interview I read stated that the songs are rawer in every state over the last few albums. AENT was worked on meticulously and ground down through repeated playings by the band so that it was known cold. The more recent albums have had some somgs pulled off in one take so it goes with out saying that the mix would lean in that direction. Doesn't have to and yeah, a crystal like "starfish" quality would be nice, but each album Tim mixes has added character to that bunch of songs. In no way do I think he is a bad mixer though at times I wish I didn't have to decifer as much...but that adds an elemant of mystery to it which makes me want to play the albums more just in case I missed something. Also, playing the albums loud, soft through headphones or boom box speakers gives openings to unheard sonic gems. Don't limit yourself and how you listen. Just another stereo-type if you do...
ML,
don joe
Overeaction from Zeebob or what?!
Calm down, you fuckers!
This's all my fault for making a daft quip this morning about Steve mixing the stuff instead o' Tim!
Not everything everybody comes out with is a thought-out, held-to-the-death viewpoint, you saps!
Sometimes y'spout off the top o' y'head wi a smirk on yer gob n it's no more than that!
Lighten up for fuck's sake!!!
Personally, I think all this discussion about mixing and muddy sound and being bothered by having to strain your delicate ears to hear the instruments is really absurd. I like music to be as natural as possible. Overproduced music is too sterile. A good musician does not need a lot of technology and synthetic sound to create mood and feeling. I’m not impressed when I hear a piece of music that has been tampered with. Conceive the piece, press play and go for it. The magic’s in the musician’s fingers, the singer’s voice, and the substance of the composition. Poor singers and shallow musicians need all the fancy gadgets and the engineer with their filters and boosters. Dolled up music is like heavy makeup or fake boobs. No thanks! Take away the cosmetics and the plastic and what have you got? Something closer to innateness. I’ll take that any day. When I hear an overproduced recording, I imagine an insecure little person in a cubicle surrounded by expensive gizmos. Quite pathetic. Then you see them live, the floor covered in wires and pedals, sequences and other crap running through the sound. Worthless, in my opinion.

Does anyone now how to get a reasonably priced (I'm in the states, remember) copy of "Dabble"?
John Garratt
While I'm playing judge and executioner here, I'll tell you what else, even if you don't give a shit, which is likely. I’ll buy the album for sure but I’ll really be hanging out to hear the songs played live. That’s when you really discover the animal you’re facing. Don’t be too hard on me, sweetheart. Come tell me to my face I’m unworthy and I’ll answer you with an offer to match yours.

At the moment I'm listening to a tape-recorded song my grandmother made from a hospital bed hours before her death. This is remarkable stuff.

If you have to cheat, don’t bother at all.
Tone-deaf, deaf head, I bet you can hear your own pulse because it's so precious to you. Try listening with your heart for a change.

Above ... that was me too.
Got to go. A burial awaits.
Woooooooohoooooooo... new solo stuff! When when WHEN??? :-)
Steve, your recommendation of Yellow6 was great. Just bought the 3CD release called "The Beautiful Season Has Past"... to put it short: it's incredibly awesome! It's good to see that there's still so much great music out there to discover.
Jens
John Garratt -- it depends on what you consider reasonably priced. I mean I figure $5 for a cd by an artist I don't like is too much, whereas $35 for one by an artist I adore is cheap for the enjoyment I will get from it.
MELLOTRON!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure about Wellington & Christchurch gigs but The Transmission Room in Auckland is centrally located on Mayoral Drive (just off Queen Street) and is an underground venue that has brick walls and only holds a max of 350 people.
It is rarely used for advertised concerts and mainly used to pre-record televised band performances for NZ music tv channel C4.
Franz Ferdinand did a warm up show there in 2006 prior to the BDO which sold out almost immediately.
Tickets went on sale for all three shows this morning and we got ours first thing. No publicity in today's NZ Herald's Time Out tho announcing the tour, maybe a bit early yet as it's still 7 weeks away yet. Radio 95bfm are supposedly promoting the AKL show so lets hope it gets well publicised and results in good crowds.

I heard your new solo record will feature only your fine voice and 12 tracks of mellotron on every song. Have I got that right?
It's sure to be brilliant, regardless!
Any fiends who aren't familiar w/ SK's solo records have a wonderful journey waiting for them:
'Earthed' (instrumental)
'Unearthed'
'The Slow Crack'
'Remindlessness'
'Dabble'
'Freaky Conclusions' (early,early stuff)

Steve Kilbeys new solo record is bound to explore some new terrain. Isidore, Mimesis, The Church, Steve Kilbey, So many incantations of the signature sound we seek and adore. May the well never run dry!!!!
I hope this one will be better than Dabble.
Hi Christian e from canada....you forgot sk's "Acoustic and Intimate" or DON'T you have that one...hmmmmmm??? :)
