ooh
you so right
those carrots screaming
oh i'll never eat another carrot
and all this negativity after a tour
my oh my
gee why cant i write about happy things
what about that story about heyday....?
ok ok
everyday just around the corner in fact
right now
some baby animals are having their teethies ripped out
so they can stand in a pen
and be fattened up with chemicals n filth
and then executed
dismembered
frozen
stamped
burnt
and served to you
you oik
who is becoming sicker n addicted
squealing in anger n irritation
that someone threatens your little meat thing you got
so why dont you turn off
why are you still here?
i dont wanna share my fucking heyday stories with you
i dont trust you
i dont care about the ratings
i dont care about the money
im not gonna have this principle of mine
being treated as an irritant
if you still around tomorrow saying anything
even a goodbye
or anything
then youre most unwelcome
i dont fucking care if every person who eats meat switches off
go on
just go silently
dont hang about darkening my doorstep
this is my home
and when i say i think the horror of this
so called meat industry is an abomination
it is comparable to slavery in its unacceptability
its comparable to the holocaust
in its calculated n mechanized horror
we dip chickens in vats of electrified water
and then saw their heads off
all with a machine
we hang cattle upside down n slash their throats
n let the weight of their own heads make the blood spurt
we dream up reasons to hunt whales
n we fuckin' harpoon em!
can you fucking dig that...?
we still harpoon whales!
oh yeah kilbey but thats just japan n norway ya know
it is now!
50 years ago
everybody did it
but it took some people
a vanguard of people
to say
hang on a minute!
we cant have this!
you see
things take time
i had already sussed the true true horror of meat
when i was 17
i mean, it aint that hard to figure out
and since then in 1972
with a few unforgivable lapses early on
i been a veggie
n now an almost vegan
i am human
i slip up
sometimes i do have honey
sometimes i cant resist chocolate
are you gonna seriously justify your own barbaric behaviour
because i have honey in my tea?
please...with the screaming carrots
no i aint heard a screaming carrot
um...
you see carrots dont have mouths
or brains
or teeth
nor was the carrot "raised"
in systematic routine degradation
its whole "life"
nor does the carrot have fucking parents
but yes
perhaps the carrot dont wanna be eaten
in its own carrotish way
thats too bad
its a fucking vegetable
you gotta draw the line somewhere
thats my line
this is my blog
yeah yeah
im adolf hitler
yeah im george bush
yeah im a narcissistic washed up petty tyrant
look im saying it all for ya so you dont have
to bother commenting again
in fact why are you reading this at all
so look
youre for me
or against me
if youre for me
stay here n maybe tomorrow its the heyday story
if you think the animal cruelty is ok
i dont see why youd wanna hear the fucking heyday story anyway
cos every note every lyric every string arrangement on that record
is to do with humanity
and animals being "treated unethically"
(a lovely euphemism)
is not humanity
not how we would want to be treated ourselves
imagine if one day we flew to a planet
and we met these cultured intelligent creatures there
but the longer we hang around on that planet we realise that
the intelligent creatures
have this huge operation going on
whereby they systematically degrade n murder
just about all the other beautiful things on the planet
how would we feel?
im not actually going as far as saying
all carnivores out of the pool here
many of my friends
and very sadly
and you can see it
my relatives eat meat
but not in my fucking house they dont
its like smoking in my house
or spouting inflammatory bullshit
i aint gonna allow it
just like you dictate whats going on in your house
right?
so i cant say to people
oh if you eat meat you cant come in
but i can ask them not to espouse pro-death industry improperganda
or i'll fuckin ask em TO leave
and thats how it is now
if you seriously think i was outta line by mentioning the piggies yessaday
if you are impatient with this veggie burger bullshit
if you are some little argumentative prick
quoting all the same old carrot-hitler cliches....
baby this meat thing is evil
i will never ever believe it isnt
i know
that one day
in a not too distant future
not as far off as you think
meat eating will gradually go off the menu
meat eating will disappear
just like fox hunts
torture
slavery
capital punishment
war
circumcision of anybody
all these evil things will slowly fade
if we can keep going
just like the atrocities of the past gradually have faded
yeah like the witchtrials (dont be so negative stevo!)
yeah just like the inquisition(cmon sk, what about heyday?)
yeah just like the crusades(gee this is boring..chill out)
yeah just like the indians
and the other indians
and the aborigines
and then in dickens time
the fucking children
children were in coalmines etc etc etc
some people at the time turned a blind eye
cmon dont be so negative...
what about heyday
hey what about martys ricken backer?
yeah yeah
you see i reckon meats time is up
did you read yessaday article that says
that global warming more affected by meat ind than car ind
if everyone became veg = more time for planet
and quite frankly
on a personal level
the meat you eat
unless youre catching yer own fish
or slaughtering your own "organic" little lambie chop
("organic" meat..? yeah thats like "lo cal" coke, right?)
or unless you hunting n killing your own food
well that meat is very very nasty
its full of SHIT!
and quite frankly baby it shows
i can tell em
the meat eaters
and i feel sad
that i am incapable
of expressing to you
with all my wordplay
with all my music
with all my pseudo spiritual bullshit
with all my bitter heartfelt honesty n scorn
with all my self examinations
with all my vanity n envy gladly exposed
who else was giving you that
bringing you in my house n meeting my kids
my hopes
my fears
my dreads
i was laying it out here for everyone to see
people say im a hypocrite
ok i am
i guess if you say so
look i didnt want ya to agree with everything i said
i really didnt
and fawning sychophants are as bad
as harping detractors
but this exile im asking you to undertake
is because
well verdelay actually summed this all up in that comment yessaday
this veg thing is not an affectation to me
this is a cornerstone of my life
like my maleness
like my age
like my heterosexuality
like my vegetarianism
its who i am
and from time to time
i will use my blogge
to proselytize to ya
because vegetarianism
is what made me what i am
and im trying to share it with you
just like the heyday story
if you dont like that
then go
subject closed for now
seriously rude comments will be deleted
yes baby
im the stalin of vegetarianism
goodbye

hey steve,
say what ya want, say what you feel.. f the complainers.
love that you referenced gary numan... right on.
amen, brother, amen
what a beautiful human being you are

am i right...this was my bigge kvestshen.... Heyday, huh? How to make a Heyday? Heyday pours down on my like a flock of wild pearls... every feedback in its place, every hit of the wooden little Ploog stick in the place it's ought to be. ... come on, Heyday is the most disciplined of all them Church records - - but the mind that disciplined The Church must have been a crooked weird mind with its very own imagination of what discipline means...
I've followed that guy, btw, and the last thing I've heard of him was the bleak blocky heavy-y dronish madness called "The Drift" by Scott Walker. Where's my musicological line between HEYDAY and THE DRIFT?
However, when the 80es begun, I was 4 years old, and when the 80es ended, I was 10 years older. But Heyday wasnt the 80es just as Salvador Dalí's death wasnt the 80es. It was Out Of Time, as an inferior jangle pop combo stated in 1991.
HEYDAY sleeve sported some guys with mullets and shirts I had never seen in my drained 80es german childhood. Oh my god - where do they sell these shirts??
But Heyday hat that shiny, glassy, transparent, half-material chimey guitary thing going on. "All my life spent searching for..." (and what the guitars are foin underneath these lines is still very mad mad mad....
It sounds like pop, but...it sounds like the popularity of Notre Dame bells in the 12th century. Guitars mocking harpsichords, clavichords, chimes... I was 13 when I listened to Heyday and it ultimately transported me to fairy take bedside times.
One day, you'll maybe share the HEYDAY story, and I'm afraid it'll be something mundane you hate today. My mind wants to hear something like "We were stuck in some St. Petersburg winter wonderland, and Pete Walsh knew that guru who knew how to prepare that potion that makes your guitars sound like a belltower..."

there's the fraction of "Kilbey, I've got a cow sizzling on my barbie machine, you won't resist".

Peter Koppes, I have that wonderful Ukulele that opened up the world of music for me----)
....just share the heyday story...

BTW - all them Hitler references...ä
yes, Hitler might have been a vegetarian. He most probably was. And what does it tell us? Hitler even had a nose. And despite that silly chaplinesque toothbrush moustache that was grown there, this means nothing at all. Hitler probably had supper on especially bad days. Hitler had hair coming out of his head...and his size was 173cm.
rhetorically, this is called "reductio ad Hitlerum" - if you're lacking points, you'll make Hitler appear sooner or later, for to make
your opponent suffer 'n cringe.
whatever - tomorrow I'll have chickpeas with spinach :-|
all the best,
SH
foin = doing
That sums it all up for me.
Maybe if I become a vegetarian I can have your clarity of thought, understanding, and kind, gentle demeanor.
I love pigs (alive). Modern industrial agriculture is the most destructive force/energy on the planet.
what was the turning point in turning you to a vegan by the way? An epipany of some sort? How hard was it to make the change?

What about cruelty to audio?
People releasing albums that have been crushed to death in mastering?
2007 is the year of dynamic range - no more waveform topiary - no more space rock with the space squeezed out. There's a fire in the mastering limiter...

Vegetarianism is indeed admirable. Just avoid unfermented soy products. Under no circumstances feed an infant with soy baby formula. Soy milk should be avoided by pre-pubescant boys due to high levels of hormones which tend to have a feminizing effect (breast growth and penis shrinkage). Recovering cancer patients, or those with a family history of cancer, should avoid soy products completely.
I was a veg for five years. For all of the reasons you list here and then some. I fell off the wagon. Its not an easy path, people laugh, people taunt, people can be cruel. And I suppose that's the point. You mentioned whaling. I just finished Farley Mowat's "A Whale For The Killing" How can humans be so savage? I'd like to climb aboard once more. Thanks for the outreached hand.
all of this confirmed my suspicions that nutrition is the new religion.
i love all that truthiness starting with "scientists have proved"
terribly amusing...
soy stuff equals short dicks.
masturbation equals crooked fingers.
female intelligence equals witchcraft.

Steven,
This is preposterous. You're saying only vegetarians are welcome on your blog? You're professing you don't like me and don't respect me because I eat meat? (Do you hate your own family, too?) I've enjoyed getting to know you through your blog, have shown you kindness, and this is the way you repay it? If you think this is a rude comment then go ahead and delete it, but I am appealing to YOUR humanity and tolerance for others' beliefs/practices. I certainly don't come on here boasting about how much I love meat and how there's nothing wrong with slaughtering animals and animal cruelty. If you really don't want me back here then please have the courtesy to indicate w/a simple "Chris don't come back" on your next blog, and I will leave you alone.
(Thought I was) Your Friend,
Chris Knowlton
I know right, has everyone gone fucking mad today!?
I'm with you on the dream thing. It's frustrating when your body wants to rest but your mind's still going. I often wake up from my dreams exhausted, especially the recurring nightmares. These breathless humid nights don't help.
With the Dentist, I'd get a second opinion for that amount of money. No visit to the Dentist is cheap, but we need to look after our teeth.
Congrats on a successful Aussie tour. Sounds like you've won back some wayward fans & gained a lotta new ones. Well deserved. Hopefully you'll be playing for many years to come. We'll all be growing old with you & we'll still want to come & see you play. Clappers & the Stones sounding great in their 60's.
Forget ole bule eyes - one day everyone gonna be talking about ole grey eyes. Start spreadig the news....

IT'S WIDE OPEN...
I have had recent trouble getting the comments section to open so I'm not fully up on what's going on, but I get the jist.
One thing I have learnt over time that it is pointless trying to convert the 'I needs me meat' masses.
For me, the turning point was an excursion to Melbourne when I was 14. We were in one of those air suspension buses that sat high above the road. The bus stopped at a set of lights near the city and an open topped truck pulled up next to us.
It was full of cows heads.
Even more disturbing than the sight that confronted me was the reaction of my fellow travellers. They made it out to be a great joke...
chris dont come back
I think Steve has a peculiar notion of what a blog is. A blog means 1) someone makes a statement 2) everyone else discusses. Since when did a blog mean 1) someone makes a statement 2) everyone else either agrees or leaves? If you Steve don't want discussion then you can just disable comments.
bitting hands,

going all scarab on us...?
i suspect you
all

and im trying to share it with you
no, you're telling people you hate them and to fuck off.
he he... next week its the straights who gonna get it
bring back the blowjobmascara, at least they were funny.
don't get me wrong, i get me wrong. i drink too much, i snort too much, i eat too much, i sleep too much, i dream too much, but yes, still. waiting.
sk has every right to say whatever he wants and to appeal to whomever he wishes. as he said, from time to time he shall proselytize to you, like it or not.
i see meat eating as a sort of addiction, myself included in it. most people get pretty defensive whenvener theyre accused of something destructive - this being obviously no exception. geez people...attempt a slight bit of objectivity from time to time.
and i believe he wrote that he wishes those that wish to ARGUE his points should leave. its a one way street, and sk's the mayor. or grand vizier. anyway, respect his right to be earnest in a worldview....his thinking has no effect on your world unless you wish to adapt to another perspective, which right or wrong is simply different.
btw, the average (meaning some are better, but just as many are far worse) slaughterhouse (lovely and incredibly descriptive name) is evry bit as barbaric and unhumane as described. ever smell a chicken farm?
i have utter respect for vegetarianism/veganism, though i personally find it terribly difficult.
anyone have suggestions/stories/help to offer?
Are your daughters, wife, and fellow band mates all vegeterian? great blog...I am in the process of giving up the meat. I agree with the vegeterian mind, but it is a difficult task to make the switch to a full time veg head.
After reading your blog it becomes a little bit easier
Peas and carrots,

hey steve...so yesterday one of the anons said something about the usuals on here being yes men, suck ups, whatever...you get me. to that i say, just because we don't choose to start a pissing contest with you, or try to burn you a new asshole if we didn't agree with something you said doesn't make us suck ups. and i think there's a lot of like minded people on here to begin with. personally, i've gone back and forth over the years being vegetarian and not being one. and of course i agree with the fact it's cruel and evil to the animals...can't see why anyone would argue with that part of it really. and to be honest, i definately feel better and healthier when i'm not eating meat.
anyway, i can be very opinionated...love a good debate. but the bottom line is, it's your blog, your feelings, your thoughts...if i don't agree with something and it really hits a chord i'll probably say something about it, but i'm not gonna just rip into you. i don't come here everyday to get into a argument. but, i've babbled long enough...take care man.
It's so hard I can't even spell the word properly.
-unknown blogger
It is fact that meat eating causes cancer while a fruit\veg diet can cure it.
Grazing cattle,sheep is at the expense of the native animals.
All you city dudes need to get out to the real world and all you farming types need to plant F&V enough for all creatures.
Each day I see a wild thing I count as fortunate.
I have missed a few days of your blogg Steve (sigh)- and have been skimming though to get the gist of what's been going on.
Don't let the few un-enlightened get to you - their ignorance and rudeness are not worth your energy. Please feel free to delete the nasty comments - they don't deserve the space.
You are a beautiful man of strong conviction and I applaud you - giving a voice to the voiceless and the defenceless.
I too am vegetarian - have been since I was 10 (!) (despite also having a few unforgiveable moments in my teens). My defining moment was when my family were sitting down to a Sunday roast (chicken) - and I looked out the back sliding door and saw my pet chooks pecking around the back yard. I looked at them...then back to my plate...and I just couldn't eat it. For the ensuing 25 years I have been the butt of most people's jokes and jibes and sneering (school, uni, family, friends, work) - (a family member once told me to go out and grab some grass to put on my plate for dinner at a family gathering!) - but have found the best response is a calm one liner (or two!). Most people are ignorant and have no idea how their carcass gets on to their plate.
In my adult years many have been judgemental that my children are also veggie - they think that they are going without vital vitamins/nutrients.... but then again they shake their heads at our parenting also (ie. co-sleeping and carrying our babies around in slings etc). Our meals are all pre-planned and always contain tofu/beans/legumes - it actually encourages healthy eating!
To all - I thoroughly recommend the book 'Animal Liberation' by Peter Singer - about the common practices of laboratory testing on animals and cruelty involved with factory farming. "This book is a must...not just for every animal lover but for every civilized reader." (Cleveland Amory).
(The Animal Liberation website is worth a look too).
I also think that you have been misunderstood ie. there are some who think that all meat eaters not allowed on this blogg - you have said that those who "espouse pro-death industry improperganda" will be asked to leave - which is different.
anyhow, wanted to give you a cyber hug and to tell you to keep your chin up and continue writing your amazing blogg - it's a big part of my daily ritual - I LOVE it!
kindest regards,
Nic
ps. my idea of a blogg - is that that the person shares an on-line diary-type daily entry...being able to comment back is an added bonus of yours - I didn't think it came part and parcel of a usual blogg (but then again - I'm not internet savvy and have never seen anyone else's blogg so could be just not 'in the know'!).
hi steve,
after the borderline gig in london
(2nd show)last year,
chris,my wife insisted that we have a photo taken together.
initially i didn't want to bother
you with this as i thought perhaps
it was a little 'uncool'(me being
50 myself!),so i went: 'oh no that's ok,it would be a bit cheesy
wouldn't it!
you won't remember what your reaction was to that, but i do,and
i will never forget,
you said:
'have you followed us long?'
'since the very start' i replied.
'then your'e as good a friend as
any i've ever had, of course we should have a photo taken, who knows what might happen, we may never meet again!'
and you put your arm around me like i was your brother.
after two shows back to back,
with a sore throat(thank god for the manuka)and still reeling from
grantley's passing.
i mumbled something about how i admired you and the druids for never ever comprimising.
and i know you never ever will,
not artisticaly, nor in terms of your beliefs.
i don't know if any of this helps
all you confused people out there,
after all, this is my only real personal encounter with the guy
who seems to have divided so many
of you.
but if first impressions are anything to go by---------
looking forward to more tales from
the church archives soon!
you got 'bottle' killer,
that's fer sure.
felicitations,
andy L.
p.s have a listen to the lyrics of
'interesting times' on the 'dudes of neptune' myspace site, it'll
tell you a lot about how we feel
about the way the world is going!
lordy, did i write all that?
Why allow people to "push buttons" and produce a predictable result? Is it in our programming to react to attacks with retaliation...or is there another way?
What is the intention behind the way we react or respond?
Who is in the driver's seat of our life...us or the button pushers?
Every moment of life is an opportunity to create a new way of responsding. If we react in a predictable, robotic manner...we are creating without consciousness.
This dynamic of unconscious creation has led the world into the perilous situation in which it now finds itself.
What is the solution?...
"The introduction of consciousness into the cyclical processes of creation at the point of intention, and at the point of reaction, allows choice. It permits the selection of alternatives. It brings consciousness to the process of evolution. Your intention and attention shape your experiences. What you intend, through the density of matter, through the densest level of Light, becomes your reality. Where your attention goes, you go.
If you attend to the negative aspects of life, if you choose to focus your attention on the weaknesses of others, on their faults and shortcomings, you draw to yourself the lower-frequency energy currents of disdain, anger and hatred. You put distance between yourself and others. You create obstacles to your loving. Your energy and influence move slowly through the realm of the personality, the arena of time and space and matter. If you direct your energy into criticism of others with the intention to disempower them, you create negative karma.
If you choose to focus your attention on the strengths of others, on the virtues of others, on that part of others that strives for the highest, you run through your system the higher-frequency currents of appreciation, acceptance and love. Your energy and influence radiate instantaneously from soul to soul. You become an effective instrument of constructive change"
The arguments for vegetarianism are undeniable.
Here's one hundred and one of them.
Let's read them together, and then make a conscious choice.
Hi. Wow certainly a few days away from yr blog and i feel like i have stumbled into a warzone (of a sort), what with people making ya angrty with their comments and stuff, i am a passionate vegatarian, have been for 34 years, the idea of a meat industry is repulsive to me as it is to you, but i have no issue with those that eat it, only that they consider the barbarity of what they do, and if they choose to ignore me well, that's their own buisness. However i can't respect or like the fact they do this.
I would however respect the hunter who kills and follows the whole process from start to finish, there's a certain integrety about that.
i despair when i see road kill every time i drive to work, the carnage on the road is another element of our lifestyle that should be addressed, what a terrible way to die for an animal. Frozen by a overwhelming white light and crushed by a hunk of oil guzzling metal at 80ks, and splattered upon the highway, where's the dignity in that. We are the most arrogent of all life on this planet showing very little humanity to one another let alone inter species.
This is why i fear humanity is about to learn a very important lesson, humility. Global warming, ice age, maybe is the extinction we have to have.
I once read peter russels brilliant book, 'the awakening earth', when i was younger, it changed my life, gave me hope. but i recall his description of the two possible answers to the question, 'what is our relationship to gaia?' one being moving towards global conciousness the type he expounds in his book, the other theorising that humanity could be a cancer, a malignent growth blindingly devouring its ancestral host in an act of selfish consumption. Now perhaps 34 years later i seem to have lost hope in his vision for humanity wondering how and what i can do to stop an unstopable cancer upon such an amazing organism such as ours, i have a son who i want to inherit the earth as i know it, my friends all have children who we fear for the kind of world we are leaving them, but change starts primarily with the self, and those we are close to, so i understand totally why you would feel so passionate about convincing others, and i shamefully wish i had your motivation to get angry and argue with the people around me. So there it is. Envy. What i envy about you, is you have not given up on your brothers and sisters. Bless ya!
Steve
I have the highest respect (and even envy) for those who have strength and conviction enough to choose the veggie lifestyle. And even a person with a 1 digit IQ knows the meat industry is pure madness.
I consider myself a decent person who would like to become more decent. I do consume meat, even knowing all the negatives (maybe they addicted me when I was a child and I've not yet woken up). I also make music even tho the music industry is also completely corrupt, although shy of murder. I also spend money even tho it's brought more pain into this world than can be measured. I work on a lot of things about myself and my choices, but what I eat is not at the moment my top cause. This blog this week has given me a lot to think about.
What I identified with most was yesterday's beautiful comment by Matt Davidson that perhaps we might face the greatest challenge of all, and unite to feed the poor, be it leaf or meat for the moment.
I love you brother, respect your passion and your cause, and may even join your crusade someday. For the moment, this is me and what i do.
I know you don't mean 'all meat eaters go away', but honestly, I do feel judged and held in contempt by you, to a degree, and many of your readers. It is perfectly your right to feel and express as you wish, as it is mine and everyone's.
Hadn't read the blog in awhile, came back yesterday to find this raging (and important) debate gong full blast. It's very thought provoking, and I hope, healthy and inspiring. But honestly, the tone just strikes me as too...hard to find the right word. I'll just say I feel very judged and unwelcome, whether that's anybody's intention or not. So for the time being, I will, with best wishes for everyone and no disprespect to you, my friend of 20 years, bow out from this blog (but not your friendship, I hope).
I'm not trying to escape the reality and importance of the debate, it's just all a bit too heated and judgemental for me as it is. We should all remember that Judgement is just one of many dangers we deal with in this nutty fucked up world. And I WILL think about what's been said and use it, if you'll forgive the expression, as food for thought.
Love To All,
Bucks Burnett
i sincerly hope i don't come across like a fawning sychophant, i guess i do in a weird embarresing way but i asure ya its just a dumb kinda adolecent awe one would have when meeting their kinda long time hero's and inspirations, really it is....you know, your in a band i love, what can i say?
i'm always grateful for your candor and honesty, steve. if a person doesn't have that, than what does he/she have??
i appreciate and admire your resolve to always be true to yourself and your beliefs~~never compromising, never acquiescing. that's why i've been listening to you and the church for so long!!
lotza love....
I must have a thicker skin than most, i choose to stay despite still eating meat and not take offence because its your view sk and i want to hear your views. It is harsh but so is passion and i feel that like in the past you will calm down too. Me, I had a beer on the deck.
I will tell you what Steve - On your upcoming tour this year why dont you voice your opposition to meat eating during every show. Hell why dont you advertise your shows as "Only Vegans Welcome - Meat Eaters go to hell". You are very quick to chastise meat eaters on your blog because it does not result in much if any lost revenue for you. You need to start a major campaign this next tour. Get your voice out there Steve. Let the world know that the Church hates anyone who partakes in animal meat. Preach your distaste in every interview that you give from this day forward...I respect your opinion, and you are entitled to it.
Oi Morrissey - don't you smoke pot in your house?
bravo for demanding respect here in your space - for whatever beliefs you have
by accepting donations it is probably even more imperative for you not to feel like you are being bought, either by money or the gifts people send, and neither should anyone feel they own you or can demand or expect anything in return
we are not buying friendship, or a sit com here, this is a brave, experimental, collaborative commission of an amorphous nature, with undefined boundaries, dealing with many thought provoking issues that dig deep
it is difficult and emotional to reconcile our love, our self esteem, our sense of worth, for some our questioning of our right to be here, with the conflicting principles of hospitality - in a private space - and expression - in a public space
here we are guests - and mostly uninvited guests whose novelty has worn thin
so let us give the man some peace
"you're so right - those carrots screaming
oh i'll never eat another carrot
...i dont care about the ratings"
Mr. Kilbey, I want to make sure you know that I was only joking when I brought up the 'vegetables feel pain' thing. It was just humor to lighten the mood in the comment section.
The comment I made about blog ratings (that they go up when the subject is controversial) was an observation, not an indication that I believe you pick your subjects to achieve ratings.
If it matters, I just wanted you to know that those two items from yesterday were NOT slams against you in ANY way. Nothing of the sort.
I respect your stance on this subject, and agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY that the workings of the meat industry are offensive & horrific.
You know from the past that I'm no suck-up and that if I disagree I say so. I am NOT in disagreement with you at all on this.
Don't let the comments rile you too badly - esp my comments which were not against you or your message.

Hey Great Blogg today.
It's also amusingly ironic you've titled it with a Gary Numan reference.
Please don't read anything into it anyone but Gary Numan has a diet of typically British dead meat stogge.
I read all about it in James Freuds biography 'The voice left from dinking'.
Ya see in the 80's Gary whisked James away to produce and album for him or somethin. James was latter credited with handclaps on one of Gazza's albums.
It's seemed James thought Gazza was gonna open some cool new wave doors for him. It's musta all have seemed pretty glam at the time but he was soon to be dissallusioned.
One of the most dissallusioning things James writes about is Garys disscusting British diet. But worse than Gazza's diet was the regular foul deat meat flatulence it produced.
Being the genuine pop star in the relationship Gazza felt free to let rip whenever he felt like it.
This included the small confines of Gary's rather expensive sportscar. "why waste it' James quotes gary as saying.
I guess Gary Numans meaty flatulence is all a bit irrelevent.
However if you feel dissallusioned by anything regarding SK spare a thought for poor ol James Freud.
Now can we stop upsetting him so he can tell us some 80's stories.
Hey Steve did ya ever meet Gary Numan.? Hope he didn't fart near ya.
Daniel12
Ps. I hope this hasn't come accross that I think SK's some 80's has been. Quite the opposite. I never liked his 80's stuff and I never saw the Church play then. However I do like some of what they do nowadays and I enjoy there gigs too. So there you go SK. I like your new stuff better than your old stuff.
I love 80's pop star stories though. Such human folly. There allways seems to be a moral to them.
James Freuds biograpy is full of em, very very Funny..
Anon 2.11 - you are wrong to think that The Church and Steve Kilbey's personal blog and views are the same thing!
It must be nice to be so privileged that you don't find people corpses outside your house most days. Sickness, exposure, starvation, they get almost everyone where I live.
Knew there was a reason I didn't like your music. Dunno why anyone recommended your blog. But don't worry, I won't come back.
I don't even know anyone personally who can afford food every day. And reading this...you sound like all the rich bastards. Animals over people anyday. Maybe that's not fair. Maybe it's a stereotype. But I never met one yet who cared about people who aren't rich.
Which kinda brings me down. But what do I know? I don't have enough money to own an opinion.
Bye.
Sue Cee...you eat meat don't you?
You gotta be pretty conflicted here because you live on the land and are familiar with the plight of primary producers etc.
Do you think the meat industry is barbaric? Are you gonna stay on the blog or have you been swept out the door with the rest of us?
I don't comment very often but I will sat this.....he can say what he wants obviously...he could say the sky is purple and there are a bunch of ppl here who'll agree...but the bit that rankles is when he asks for money some weeks and then tells you your dispicable and to fuck off the next. In no uncertain terms.
He wants all meat eaters off this blog....we could be Mother Theresa in every other aspect of our lives but that do not matter.
So thats me out.
TC
SK,
What about abortion?
Are you against it or pro choice?
Since we're being controversial and all that.
I do hope your defence of animal life stretches to human life.
I'd hate to think you'd alienate all your carnivorous readers and subscribers if your love of life wasnt universal.
I ain't no religious zealot, but people who say a child in the womb is not a human being until birth are kidding only themselves - Now that's what I call barbarism.
Would love your views SK?
Also - the shipping of more young American sniper fodder to Bhagdad -well that's premeiditated slaughter too. I'm sure we agree on that. What a world we live in!
Whatever people's belief's we gotta respect each other's right to an opinion. Shame when it's offensive to those who continue to support your career. In a way you have a responsibility to your band mates not to piss people off liking the Church because you say all meat eaters are cunts on your blog. That's potentially going to have a negative affect on them for your actions.
You are so right about the meat industry SK - BUT - Bucks B hit the nail on the head with his comment - it's a pity you're coming across so judgmentally on this one.
Creatively you still rock - but I think you have lost the run of yourself here.
love and peace.

You think you're saving the world by eating a tofu-burger and sticking to a diet of grains and berries? Well here's something that not many vegetarians know (or care to acknowledge): every year millions of animals are killed by wheat and soy bean combines during harvesting season. Oh yeah, go on and on for hours about how all of us meat eaters are going to hell for having a steak, but conveniently ignore the fact that each year millions of mice, rabbits, snakes, skunks, possums, squirrels, gophers and rats are ruthlessly murdered as a direct result of YOUR dieting habits. What's that? I'm sorry, I don't hear any more elitist banter from you pompous cocks. Could it be because your shit has been RUINED? That's right: the gloves have come off. The vegetarian response to this embarrassing fact is "well, at least we're not killing intentionally." So let me get this straight; not only are animals ruthlessly being murdered as a direct result of your diet, but you're not even using the meat of the animals YOU kill? At least we're eating the animals we kill (and although we also contribute to the slaughter of animals during grain harvesting, keep in mind that we're not the ones with a moral qualm about it), not just leaving them to rot in a field somewhere. That makes you just as morally repugnant than any meat-eater any day. Not only that, but you're killing free-roaming animals, not animals that were raised for feed. Their bodies get mangled in the combine's machinery, bones crushed, and you have the audacity to point fingers at the meat industry for humanely punching a spike through a cow's neck? If you think that tofu burgers come at no cost to animals or the environment, guess again.To even suggest that your meal is some how "guiltless" is absurd. The defense "at least we're not killing intentionally" is bullshit anyway. How is it not intentional if you KNOW that millions of animals die every year in combines during harvest? You expect me to believe that you somehow unintentionally pay money to buy products that support farmers that use combines to harvest their fields? Even if it was somehow unintentional, so what? That suddenly makes you innocent? I guess we should let drunk drivers off the hook too since they don't kill intentionally either, right? There's no way out of this one. The only option left for you dipshits is to buy some land, plant and pick your own crops. Impractical? Yeah, well, so is your stupid diet.
Even if combines aren't used to harvest your food, you think that buying fruits and vegetables (organic or otherwise) is any better? How do you think they get rid of bugs that eat crops in large fields? You think they just put up signs and ask parasites to politely go somewhere else? Actually, I wouldn't put that suggestion past you hippies. One of the methods they use to get rid of pests is to introduce a high level of predators for each particular prey, which wreaks all sorts of havoc on the natural balance of predator/prey populations--causing who knows what kind of damage to the environment. Oops, did I just expose you moral-elitists for being frauds? Damndest thing.
A number of people have pointed out that the amount of grain grown to feed animals for slaughter every year is greater than the amount of grain grown for humans. So I guess the amount of grain grown for human consumption suddenly becomes negligible and we can conveniently ignore the fact that animals are still ruthlessly murdered either way because of your diet, right? Not to mention that the majority of grain grown for livestock is tough as rocks, coarse, and so low-grade that it's only fit for animal consumption in the first place. Spare me the "you could feed 500 people with the grain used to feed one cow" line of shit; it's not the same grain. Then there are the people who jump on the bandwagon with "you could plant billions of potatoes on the land used for cows"--good point, except for the fact that not every plot of land is equally fertile; you think farmers always have a choice on what they do with their land? Also, many vegetarians don't know (or care to acknowledge) that in many parts of the United States they have "control hunts" in which hunting permits are passed out whenever there is a pest problem (the pest here is deer, elk and antelope) that threatens wheat, soy, vegetable and other crops; this happens several times per year. Even if the number of animals that die in combine deaths every year isn't in the millions, even if it's just one, are you suggesting that the life of one baby rabbit isn't worth saving? Are you placing a value on life? Enjoy your tofu, murderers.
Steve Kilbey: I think this is another one of those "SK opened his big fat mouth again" instances. It's a wonder nobody's ever brain punched you into a coma after one of your snide putdowns. Apparently nobody on this planet is good enough for Steve Kilbey, he is so holy and a perfect angel. The only thing I like about you is your music; personally I find your nasty, arrogant, angry attitude to be very tiring, and extremely un-bohemian. So please get over yourself you little phoney, and take your band of ass-kissing commenters with you. See you on the "Vegans Only" Tour! You gonna need to beg for Paypal donations then!! PS: I don't like you either. PPS: As you can see you got a lot of deleting to do, so get to it you Saviour of the Beasts
I don't get it anons.
Why be on this blog if it fills you so full of anger?
There is no way you can have found your way to TTB without knowing SK's stance on meat?
The comments being made are just so aggressive. If it upsets you so much to read it go somewhere else. The internet's a big place - there's no shortage of choice although only one church. SK doesn't get rich from his music - undeservedly so - so I'm sure he doesn't need the patronage or diatribe.
We need less anger.
anon at 10:31am -- how horrifying -- both the cargo and your fellow travellers' reaction. I probably would have hurled. I bet if they had been truly comfortable with what they saw they wouldn't have needed to make jokes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Steve -- Several times over this blog's life I have come across parts which make me take a hard look at myself -- and sometimes what I see isn't what I'd like to see. These times certainly have been uncomfortable, but they are ultimately rewarding because when I face those things I don't like I can work on changing them. Certainly you aren't the only person who is able to get that reaction from me, but you are particularly good at prodding those touchy spots, damn you! ;-) You've made a lot of people very uncomfortable over these past few days. To me that's a very good thing. Comfortable people will never change or effect change. There are many things in this world which need changing, but if we are unwilling to face the unpleasant, uncomfortable realities no change will ever happen. So I want you to keep saying what you think, even when it makes me uncomfortable.
And I have to agree with isolde on the donations. When I buy something from you I expect to get the product I ordered, but when I give a donation or a gift (to anyone, not just SK) I do it because I want to, not because I expect anything in return.
And you sure do know how to draw some, ummm, interesting characters out of the woodwork too, Stevester. Not quite sure that is such a good thing though....
eek stop kissing his ass...you eat meat so your not even allowed to be here
As I started reading today's blog, a line from the song SK quoted yesterday ran through my head - 'She don't belong here anymore, learn this the hard way'.
I don't know that for sure yet, but it doesn't surprise me in a way that someone who I've admired for 26 years would provoke a crisis of conscience. No, I'm not being fawning or melodramatic, just honest.
So I think I'll leave you all to it for a while, with my best wishes to you all.
Can I just say one more thing though, & I don't mean it to sound self-righteous, or holier-than-thou; you know I still eat meat sometimes. But we all do actually realise, don't we, that there's nothing actually addictive about any kind of meat/poultry product? Some of us might be used to eating it, have been eating it for as long as we can remember, but it's certainly not a drug. It's a conscious choice everytime.
Lots of love,
Michelle Dx
Steve is an imperfect human, like the rest of us. He has angered me before in his sweeping generalizations & demonization of those who hold a differing viewpoint. I understand why you are angry at him. That said, we've all got faults and maybe one of his is showing now. His blog is a good place for that.
DAVEM said: "I don't get it anons.
-------------------------------
DaveM - in all fairness, I would point out that the level of anger & aggression in the comments is directly proportionate to the anger & agression (as well as harsh judgementalism) that Mr. Kilbey dished out onto his fans.
I agree with Mr. Kilbey on this issue and appreciate his passion, but I also understand the hurt & resentment that his harsh personal attacks brought. No one likes to be judged & no one likes to be personally attacked by someone they like or respect, and that is what Steve has done.
One thing I have come to appreciate about Steve through his blog is that he is imperfect & full of the same defects that all of us have. He has less faults than some, more faults than others. His blog just the ohter day pointed that out. This whole issue & how it has been handled is just an example of that - at least it is honest which is a credit to him I believe.
The shark is circling its prey.
Suddenly, a dolphin appears from nowhere...and rams into the side of the shark, distracting it from its imminent (immanent?) attack.
Enraged, the shark pursues the dolphin until both are exhausted.
"Just wait till I get my energy back," snarls the shark. "You, and all your mates...you'll regret ever having known me. I'm going to tear you all apart"
"Regret having known you? It seems you don't yet know yourself!", laughed the dolphin.
"What do you mean?" snapped the shark.
"Well...you keep acting, snarling and snapping as if you were a shark. Wake up my fiend! You're not a shark. You're a dolphin just like me!!"
You're miles shallow Sue Cee, oops sorry, I meant intelligent.
Nice post Sue Cee.
And to be fair to SK (& in response to Centuryhouse) this whole thing started because SK put his tigger-like bouncyness down to his meat-free diet in his Friday blog. It was the aggressive response to his blog that started all this.
Anyway, looking forward to this moving on. Roll on Heyday! :)
OK anger has had a pretty good run and envy has had a go too. what about, say lust or vanity next?
These young people don't know a mullet(short over the ears and really long hair at the back i.e. Michael Hutchence 1985) from a mop top! And from your mood today there ain't no dead mullets for you to stomach!!
Shit! CaptainMission actually does go to work!!!!!!!!
to the anonymous ranter, so is it "millions of animals" that are killed by combine harvesters or just one baby rabbit? you say it doesn't matter, but could it be that you were having second thoughts, as you finished your tirade against vegetarians, - could it be that you, like me, were having difficulty imagining all those animals grazing blissfully unaware as the ground shakes and a whirring screaming combine harvester bears down on them? how many small animals have you run over with your lawnmower in the past? (must be a lot of deaf animals in your neck of the woods).
your argument is a weak but often resorted to one - ie. if you cannot solve a problem perfectly, then there is no point in making any effort at all. or could it be that you are simply trying to convince yourself that eating meat is OK? to quote Shakespeare, "methinks he doth protesteth too much..."
As Steve Irwin RIP would've said CRIKEY! This my first time reading your stuff Steve.You sure do fire up a storm!! Got a lot out of reading your blogs and the comments, those comments. Nassty people some of'em. They should go read somethin less controversial like a hip hop blog ha ha. My 1st album was Starfish but i guess youve alreayd talked about that one hey? Bring on the vegan recipes then. Im not vegan but I can givei t a try.
Excellent blog today again,SK.
Love what your doing here.
I thought I might mention what an effect being a vegan has had on my life. Six years ago I was diagnosed with Lupus SLE which is a serious autoimmune disease that can be life threatening.
Initally I felt like I had arthritis and wondered what was going on. I ended up not being able to move and having to be carried. I likened it to feeling like I was 200 years old wih bones made of dead wood. Lupus affected my joints and liver. I could not even turn on a light switch, put shoes on because my hands and feet were too swollen etc. I also experienced immense fatigue.
Over the next six years my conditon improved but I was still fatigued and my health was up and down. For around two of those years, I was in bed around 18 hours a day because I was so fatigued.
Once I became a vegan my fatigue and joint pain that I had been suffering all this time disappeared. Becoming vegan was the best thing I've ever done.
At the beginning I had really bad blood tests but now they are perfect.
I have since found out that casein in dairy irritates the immune system and should be avoided if you have an immune problem. Why don't doctors tell you this??
I know this is a long entry but my parents who have always given me grief for being vegetarian and vegan haven't eaten meat now for 2 months and going strong. They are in their early sixties. It's never too late!
Anyway, SK, MTV and I were toasting you earlier with a Jaegermeister! Don't worry, it's herbal! ;-)
Hey SK,
Good onya for having the courage of your convictions.
"If you don't stand for something, you'll go for anything".
Some of us here are on the road to find out, as Cat Yussef Stevens once put it, and one doesn't always arrrive at the same time as others. Some never get to that particular point. We have been raised with so much hype over meat, and dairy, that it's hard to totally let go of it and think that perhaps you will be even healthier, rather than lacking iron, lacking energy,lacking calcium and strong bones and teeth, not growing up "big and strong".
As 2007 dawns I am re-examining everything I think about the way I live, about what my family needs, about the sustainablility of how that food is produced, the energy, land-clearing, trucking, refigeration and water cost of it, the growth hormones, the antibiotics, the animal cruelty of calves taken from their mothers to lead short lives raised in the dark for veal while their hapless mothers are dosed with hormones to increase their milk production to frantic levels, which increases mastitus and pain, which increases infection, so that there's traces of pus and antibiotics in that milk we drink. Cows are just living udders producing milk for humans who shouldn't be eating it, especially now we're grown. Then there's the contamination of the food chain with animal products/animal waste fed back to grazing animals, which lead to mad cow disease etc. Domestic birds have been important in the spread of bird flu.
Beef cattle stand all day in the sun because all the trees have been cleared until it's time to die.
Non free range chickens lay eggs in cages the size of a tiny toilet, on our scale. Their legs are deformed because they have to stand up on wire their whole lives, unable to interract or move, escape or die until humans say the time has come.
Sows are bolted down to prevent them rolling on their expensive piglets, unable to bond with them, just again living udders till it's time to die. This is how your prok, ham and bacon is prepared for your plate -without even going into the presevervatives and their links to cancer, especially bowell cancer.
Some farm animals may live reasonable lives but many don't. We have to stop buying meat made this way, and dairy made this way. We'll probably be a lot healthier for it. We have to think about sustainability of our food choices, not just our lazy old habits and assumptions, if we want the earth to survive beyond recent human degredation of it.
It's obvious that the way human beings are acting in their "dominion" over this world is mostly disgusting, stupid and cruel beyond belief. I'm still learning about how animals are farmed today and the more I learn the sicker I feel. Do some research, those who are offended. Maybe we should use Steve's anger as the trigger to investigate just what we're doing.
What's the downside - we learn something?
When Gary Numan came to Australia he would opnly eat mcDonalds. He liked them because they were standardised all around the world.
That aside, 'Cars' and 'Are Friends Electric' are cool, sad, disjointed pinnacles of synthetic 80's numbness; I always love hearing them and the lyrics are sheer poetry.
Melquiades,
To your question yesterday- I don't find it difficult differentiating which ingredients are animal based or not.I like to know exactly what I'm eating/using.
this whole fucking mess is getting out of hand.
To the people on here who are offended by SK speaking the truth:
SK's anger is justified. He is speaking up for the innocent and letting you know how he feels about people who lack compassion. It is certainly not "a fault", as someone tried to make out earlier, but a virtue.
Kilbey, I'm impressed. Bigtime.
melquiades,
I can think of more difficult things than check for ingredients on a product.
It isn't difficult if you care.
Sue C,
I find YOUR comment offensive:"I treasure his honesty and convictions even if they are often through rose-coloured glasses."
This is a condescending and patronising comment. Is a pig going through torture for your stomach doing so in a rose-colored world? I think not.
What are you doing on this blog?
What sort of "friend" are you?
Your other comment: "..i hear they charge for cow farting now LOL"
is pathetic- just like you.
"Environmentalist"?- my ass.
If everyone was veggie, would we start seeing this same arguing between the lacto-ovos and the vegans? What about the raw foodists and the fruitarians?
(It's just a what-if question,not a political statement.)
protestestants vs. catholic=lacto-ovo vs. vegan
thank you sue cee for pointing out that people seem to be reading some things wrong. your exemples were just the ones i was thinking of...now of course someone will probably say i'm just kissing your ass now, but oh well, an ass kisser i am then! my wife would get a good laugh outta that one.
and this from the anon who so eloquently said that all of this is..."elitist banter from you pompous cocks" we get this tidbit of knowledge to think about...
"you have the audacity to point fingers at the meat industry for humanely punching a spike through a cow's neck?"
NOW I ASK YOU...JUST HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU HUMANELY PUNCH A SPIKE THROUGH A COW'S NECK??? that's like, oh i humanely killed that old lady. i mean, i chopped her head off, so she died quickly. good god...yeah, i'm with veleska i think at this point.
take care steve.
anon 3.55 no money for food,not enough money for an opinion? but enough for a computer huh? anon ranter 4.21 so you made a point,but i'd be interested to see if you thought it was still humane if you were about to have a spike punched through your neck! what a complete pair of fuckwits,plenty of mouth but obviously not the courage of your convictions to even put your name.
BORING. Move on.
i can’t help thinking
all these things are connected somehow
the environment
the environment
the environment
the environment
the environment
and gluttony
the environment
the environment
and pride
the environment
and indifference
the environment
the environment
and the environment all over again
is it all just a matter of choice?
or does every choice matter?
Wow....I've been gone for a week and missed all the "controversy" and maybe that ain't bad. Work travel has me falling behind, but - this is yer blogge, SK, and "you can celebrate any thing you want." That's why I tune in - hoping for honest opinions, the unvarnished monologues. You supply 'em, and I enjoy 'em. Maybe I'm veering towards the sycophantic pole, maybe I ain't.......because I still eat fish and seafood, having given up the mammals and birds a while ago. I've been changing and evolving for years.
Spout on, rant away, type yer thoughts and memories as you like it, as you feel it, as you want and are wont to do in ArchDruide fashtion....
I'll be tuning in.
Hey there steve0. I respect your ideas and beliefs about meat. I actually stopped eating meat for about two weeks because of reading your blog. I actually felt better, and more healthy, but its such a staple of the american diet, its kind of hard to go around sometimes. The truth is, when you eat meat, it weighs down the spirit and the soul. I really think that. Ill always read the blog stephen.
SK,
Fantasticandy summed it up for me:
you [SK] said:
'have you followed us long?'
'since the very start' i replied.
'then your'e as good a friend as
any i've ever had, of course we should have a photo taken, who knows what might happen, we may never meet again!'
and you put your arm around me like i was your brother.
I couldn't read much past his entry, because I was bleary eyed. That is part of why I come here. The guy Andy described, that's the guy I thought you'd be. That's the guy I'm certain you are.
Another reason I started coming here was my massive appreciation for your work with Jeffrey Cain on "Isidore." I connected so much with that album that it brought me back as a fan. Then I read that it started as a single audio track that was initially created as a gift for you, and you helped turn it into Isidore?! That made me love you. You're gonna have a hard time getting rid of me. I'm a former "New Yorker." ;D
I read you loud and clear, SK. I can read between the lines, and I'm not going anywhere.
... rambling on (and on, apparently),
I really enjoy the passionate blogges Orpheus.
not being the least bit repentant.
Yes. I am a meat eater. I was vegetarian for 8 years.
It's odd though. I do draw the line on certain things.
Nice Tubeway Army reference, and great song title to make a point, ha! But it's not just carrots that scream...it's a harrowing experience whenever I chop up a zucchini screaming, "Vegetable rights!" Makes it a bit cumbersome preparing meals ya know.
To fantasticandy who posted yesterday: I recall you were asking about meals that you could provide for your family that tasted as good as meat. If you really do like the taste of meat, there are lots of products out there that taste amazingly similar to the real thing.
If you're in America you could always try Smart Dogs which taste EXACTLY like hot dogs. Also something called Smart Bacon which is quite tasty when fried up. There are lots of ground beef substitutes on the market that you can use to put in tacos or anything that you would normally use ground beef for and there isn't any of that disgusting grease in the pan afterwards. Also, Quorn products are an excellent choice provided you and your family don't have any allergies to fungus or mushrooms in general as this is not a soy product and some people have fallen ill not knowing what these products were made of.
There are excellent chicken patty substitutes out there but like all the rest of what I listed above you need to experiment with different products to find the ones that you like the best. I even tried a salisbury steak made out of soy protein once and it was so close to the real thing that I couldn't finish it because it really did taste like a salisbury steak. Yikes!!
Remember with tofu that it takes on the taste of whatever you cook it with, so mix it well with the sauces and veggies of your choice and it's actually delicious. Experiment to your heart's content and you and your family will be healthy and also enjoy some very tasty meals. Best of luck! :-)
can't wait for tiday's blog...
Hey Steve...
Why don't you tell us how you really feel?
Queen of Sh…
You don’t know Sue Cee at all. Environmentalist. Goddamn right. She lives on a huge isolated property and 8000ac of that is untamed natural scrubland that she and her husband manage on their own and maintain at their own expense – native animals run wild on their place and have the luxury of using their dam water for drinking. No lakes or running rivers out there. What do you seriously do for the environment that actually involves physical pain or giving up maybe the luxury of your lifestyle?? To keep this farm going they have a very minimal amount of stock – sheep they raise for wool and a few goats who live out a long and happy life in their huge paddocks – no factory farming here. They plant their wheat crops and battle so many things to keep their heads above water ie drought, govt restrictions, isolation and not being near their kids. She probably hasn’t responded right now because she’s out there working in the hot sun or working at her other jobs, she has like 3 or 4 jobs going at once. Friend of Steves? She’s given years and years of unpaid love and devotion to Steve and The Church promoting their music and art to the big wide world. She’s even trying to convert her husband to vegetarianism, a died in the wool generational farmer type guy who is quite capable of hunting his own food if he had to. I think he fishes on occasion but he’s also the biggest animal lover you could meet. She’s had politicians at her place constantly trying to convince them to listen to her environmental arguments and Im talking about the THE top politicians.
Fuck you QOS. Sorry sweet Sue but that just pissed me off that comment because I could see what you were saying even if she took you the wrong way. I'd be damn proud to be HER friend.
What do you do Queenie? Appropriate name you give yourself huh. Like someone else said ‘sod off ’.
Please stay, Queen o'Sheba, I'm with you. Could Mrs C at least spare us the
"but yes i am conflicted, every day. Aren't we all? I mean how many of us really want to participate or watch what happens to our food. Its the story of my life. I have many battle scars,wounds and hurt pride" blah blah blah while she rationalises away loving animals but still eating them sometimes?
None of us are perfect, but not all of us try to have a foot in both camps...
To the commentor before me (12:56pm) and to 'Queen of Sheba':
Sue C is a fantastic person, you should really leave the personal attacks at home or if you must make them at least direct them at someone more deserving. Direct them at me, I'm a bloodthirsty gun owner for Christ' sake! Just ask Steve!~
I have a feeling that if it came to picking a friend Steve might choose Sue over yourselves, so watch who you attack when you know so little about the subject.
Ah, but I don't want SK or Sue Cee as a friend.. OK, so she's a fantastic person. I don't think it was a 'personal attack' either - I just think she's talking around the issue, and you know, we've all got our stories we could tell.
Now please don't shoot!
All this argy bargy about who eats what leaves me cold. I accept your comments, Kilbs and I accept anyone else's comments. The more info and opinion we hear on the subject can only enlantern (new word for humanity)us.
I just like to read the journal from a person whose lyrics and music has fascinated me for 27 years.
Please don't confuse issues.
Along with the vego gospel we get to hear about what's happening in someone's life- just accept it or tune out.
I personally enjoy hearing the mindscape of a person who grapples with the same issues i sometimes do. This week it's a residual belief in gOD. Next week it will be something else. It's all good.
Goodbye folks. Just remember to play nice,now...you all hear?
I'm totally with you Steve. Every word. There was a period in the early nineties when it became quite hip to become a vegerarian. I was already one by that stage. But then strangely by the year 2000, every friend I had who had become a vegetarian had returned to meat/fish/chicken habits. I was the only one left standing. If anybody could point me in the direction of literature precisely linking global warming to the worldwide meat habit I would be very appreciative. Steve , you mention an article in this blog entry, where was it?
In the meantime, keep fighting the good fight Steve, it won't happen in this lifetime but one day, not so far away, meat eating will be seen for exactly what it is, weak willed gluttony.
Queen OS and anon, I did not express myself very well, I can see that in the way it reads back. And I meant freedom of choice to read and think (something we westerners have). That other comment was my 'pathetic' as you say attempt at humour.
Man, this 'Heyday' story better kick ass!
John
Sometimes, when the inevitable despair sets in over how much cruelty is accepted as the normal, healthy way of things (see: meat industry), I take a little encouragement when I think of how many previously 'normal' cruel practices have become taboo (slavery, child labor, etc., etc.), at least in many parts of the world.
And then I get frustrated again that I live in an age that's still so stupid (that is, willfully ignorant), and that my whole life will be spent in this frustratingly unenlightened setting. Oh well. Maybe that will always be the way.
Thanks for being so frank and open about it, Steve.
