Vegetarianism is indeed admirable. Just avoid unfermented soy products. Under no circumstances feed an infant with soy baby formula. Soy milk should be avoided by pre-pubescant boys due to high levels of hormones which tend to have a feminizing effect (breast growth and penis shrinkage). Recovering cancer patients, or those with a family history of cancer, should avoid soy products completely.
I was a veg for five years. For all of the reasons you list here and then some. I fell off the wagon. Its not an easy path, people laugh, people taunt, people can be cruel. And I suppose that's the point. You mentioned whaling. I just finished Farley Mowat's "A Whale For The Killing" How can humans be so savage? I'd like to climb aboard once more. Thanks for the outreached hand.

I'm with you on the dream thing. It's frustrating when your body wants to rest but your mind's still going. I often wake up from my dreams exhausted, especially the recurring nightmares. These breathless humid nights don't help.
With the Dentist, I'd get a second opinion for that amount of money. No visit to the Dentist is cheap, but we need to look after our teeth.
Congrats on a successful Aussie tour. Sounds like you've won back some wayward fans & gained a lotta new ones. Well deserved. Hopefully you'll be playing for many years to come. We'll all be growing old with you & we'll still want to come & see you play. Clappers & the Stones sounding great in their 60's.

I have had recent trouble getting the comments section to open so I'm not fully up on what's going on, but I get the jist.
One thing I have learnt over time that it is pointless trying to convert the 'I needs me meat' masses.
For me, the turning point was an excursion to Melbourne when I was 14. We were in one of those air suspension buses that sat high above the road. The bus stopped at a set of lights near the city and an open topped truck pulled up next to us.
It was full of cows heads.
Even more disturbing than the sight that confronted me was the reaction of my fellow travellers. They made it out to be a great joke...

Are your daughters, wife, and fellow band mates all vegeterian? great blog...I am in the process of giving up the meat. I agree with the vegeterian mind, but it is a difficult task to make the switch to a full time veg head.

hey steve...so yesterday one of the anons said something about the usuals on here being yes men, suck ups, whatever...you get me. to that i say, just because we don't choose to start a pissing contest with you, or try to burn you a new asshole if we didn't agree with something you said doesn't make us suck ups. and i think there's a lot of like minded people on here to begin with. personally, i've gone back and forth over the years being vegetarian and not being one. and of course i agree with the fact it's cruel and evil to the animals...can't see why anyone would argue with that part of it really. and to be honest, i definately feel better and healthier when i'm not eating meat.

You are a beautiful man of strong conviction and I applaud you - giving a voice to the voiceless and the defenceless.
I too am vegetarian - have been since I was 10 (!) (despite also having a few unforgiveable moments in my teens). My defining moment was when my family were sitting down to a Sunday roast (chicken) - and I looked out the back sliding door and saw my pet chooks pecking around the back yard. I looked at them...then back to my plate...and I just couldn't eat it. For the ensuing 25 years I have been the butt of most people's jokes and jibes and sneering (school, uni, family, friends, work) - (a family member once told me to go out and grab some grass to put on my plate for dinner at a family gathering!) - but have found the best response is a calm one liner (or two!). Most people are ignorant and have no idea how their carcass gets on to their plate.
In my adult years many have been judgemental that my children are also veggie - they think that they are going without vital vitamins/nutrients.... but then again they shake their heads at our parenting also (ie. co-sleeping and carrying our babies around in slings etc). Our meals are all pre-planned and always contain tofu/beans/legumes - it actually encourages healthy eating!
To all - I thoroughly recommend the book 'Animal Liberation' by Peter Singer - about the common practices of laboratory testing on animals and cruelty involved with factory farming. "This book is a must...not just for every animal lover but for every civilized reader." (Cleveland Amory).
(The Animal Liberation website is worth a look too).
I also think that you have been misunderstood ie. there are some who think that all meat eaters not allowed on this blogg - you have said that those who "espouse pro-death industry improperganda" will be asked to leave - which is different.
anyhow, wanted to give you a cyber hug and to tell you to keep your chin up and continue writing your amazing blogg - it's a big part of my daily ritual - I LOVE it!

Hi. Wow certainly a few days away from yr blog and i feel like i have stumbled into a warzone (of a sort), what with people making ya angrty with their comments and stuff, i am a passionate vegatarian, have been for 34 years, the idea of a meat industry is repulsive to me as it is to you, but i have no issue with those that eat it, only that they consider the barbarity of what they do, and if they choose to ignore me well, that's their own buisness. However i can't respect or like the fact they do this.
I would however respect the hunter who kills and follows the whole process from start to finish, there's a certain integrety about that.
i despair when i see road kill every time i drive to work, the carnage on the road is another element of our lifestyle that should be addressed, what a terrible way to die for an animal. Frozen by a overwhelming white light and crushed by a hunk of oil guzzling metal at 80ks, and splattered upon the highway, where's the dignity in that. We are the most arrogent of all life on this planet showing very little humanity to one another let alone inter species.
This is why i fear humanity is about to learn a very important lesson, humility. Global warming, ice age, maybe is the extinction we have to have.
I once read peter russels brilliant book, 'the awakening earth', when i was younger, it changed my life, gave me hope. but i recall his description of the two possible answers to the question, 'what is our relationship to gaia?' one being moving towards global conciousness the type he expounds in his book, the other theorising that humanity could be a cancer, a malignent growth blindingly devouring its ancestral host in an act of selfish consumption. Now perhaps 34 years later i seem to have lost hope in his vision for humanity wondering how and what i can do to stop an unstopable cancer upon such an amazing organism such as ours, i have a son who i want to inherit the earth as i know it, my friends all have children who we fear for the kind of world we are leaving them, but change starts primarily with the self, and those we are close to, so i understand totally why you would feel so passionate about convincing others, and i shamefully wish i had your motivation to get angry and argue with the people around me. So there it is. Envy. What i envy about you, is you have not given up on your brothers and sisters. Bless ya!

I have the highest respect (and even envy) for those who have strength and conviction enough to choose the veggie lifestyle. And even a person with a 1 digit IQ knows the meat industry is pure madness.
I consider myself a decent person who would like to become more decent. I do consume meat, even knowing all the negatives (maybe they addicted me when I was a child and I've not yet woken up). I also make music even tho the music industry is also completely corrupt, although shy of murder. I also spend money even tho it's brought more pain into this world than can be measured. I work on a lot of things about myself and my choices, but what I eat is not at the moment my top cause. This blog this week has given me a lot to think about.
What I identified with most was yesterday's beautiful comment by Matt Davidson that perhaps we might face the greatest challenge of all, and unite to feed the poor, be it leaf or meat for the moment.
I love you brother, respect your passion and your cause, and may even join your crusade someday. For the moment, this is me and what i do.
I know you don't mean 'all meat eaters go away', but honestly, I do feel judged and held in contempt by you, to a degree, and many of your readers. It is perfectly your right to feel and express as you wish, as it is mine and everyone's.
Hadn't read the blog in awhile, came back yesterday to find this raging (and important) debate gong full blast. It's very thought provoking, and I hope, healthy and inspiring. But honestly, the tone just strikes me as too...hard to find the right word. I'll just say I feel very judged and unwelcome, whether that's anybody's intention or not. I'm not trying to escape the reality and importance of the debate, it's just all a bit too heated and judgemental for me as it is. I will tell you what Steve - On your upcoming tour this year why dont you voice your opposition to meat eating during every show. Hell why dont you advertise your shows as "Only Vegans Welcome - Meat Eaters go to hell". You are very quick to chastise meat eaters on your blog because it does not result in much if any lost revenue for you. You need to start a major campaign this next tour. Get your voice out there Steve. Let the world know that the Church hates anyone who partakes in animal meat. Mr. Kilbey, I want to make sure you know that I was only joking when I brought up the 'vegetables feel pain' thing. It was just humor to lighten the mood in the comment section.
The comment I made about blog ratings (that they go up when the subject is controversial) was an observation, not an indication that I believe you pick your subjects to achieve ratings.
If it matters, I just wanted you to know that those two items from yesterday were NOT slams against you in ANY way. Nothing of the sort.
I respect your stance on this subject, and agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY that the workings of the meat industry are offensive & horrific.

It's also amusingly ironic you've titled it with a Gary Numan reference.
Please don't read anything into it anyone but Gary Numan has a diet of typically British dead meat stogge.
I read all about it in James Freuds biography 'The voice left from dinking'.
Ya see in the 80's Gary whisked James away to produce and album for him or somethin. James was latter credited with handclaps on one of Gazza's albums.
It's seemed James thought Gazza was gonna open some cool new wave doors for him. It's musta all have seemed pretty glam at the time but he was soon to be dissallusioned.
One of the most dissallusioning things James writes about is Garys disscusting British diet. But worse than Gazza's diet was the regular foul deat meat flatulence it produced.
Being the genuine pop star in the relationship Gazza felt free to let rip whenever he felt like it.
This included the small confines of Gary's rather expensive sportscar. "why waste it' James quotes gary as saying.
I guess Gary Numans meaty flatulence is all a bit irrelevent.

The vegetarian response to this embarrassing fact is "well, at least we're not killing intentionally." So let me get this straight; not only are animals ruthlessly being murdered as a direct result of your diet, but you're not even using the meat of the animals YOU kill? At least we're eating the animals we kill (and although we also contribute to the slaughter of animals during grain harvesting, keep in mind that we're not the ones with a moral qualm about it), not just leaving them to rot in a field somewhere. Also, many vegetarians don't know (or care to acknowledge) that in many parts of the United States they have "control hunts" in which hunting permits are passed out whenever there is a pest problem (the pest here is deer, elk and antelope) that threatens wheat, soy, vegetable and other crops; this happens several times per year. Even if the number of animals that die in combine deaths every year isn't in the millions, even if it's just one, are you suggesting that the life of one baby rabbit isn't worth saving? Are you placing a value on life? Enjoy your tofu, murderers.

Steve -- Several times over this blog's life I have come across parts which make me take a hard look at myself -- and sometimes what I see isn't what I'd like to see. These times certainly have been uncomfortable, but they are ultimately rewarding because when I face those things I don't like I can work on changing them. Certainly you aren't the only person who is able to get that reaction from me, but you are particularly good at prodding those touchy spots, damn you! ;-) You've made a lot of people very uncomfortable over these past few days. To me that's a very good thing. Comfortable people will never change or effect change. There are many things in this world which need changing, but if we are unwilling to face the unpleasant, uncomfortable realities no change will ever happen. So I want you to keep saying what you think, even when it makes me uncomfortable.
And I have to agree with isolde on the donations. When I buy something from you I expect to get the product I ordered, but when I give a donation or a gift (to anyone, not just SK) I do it because I want to, not because I expect anything in return.

As I started reading today's blog, a line from the song SK quoted yesterday ran through my head - 'She don't belong here anymore, learn this the hard way'.
I don't know that for sure yet, but it doesn't surprise me in a way that someone who I've admired for 26 years would provoke a crisis of conscience. No, I'm not being fawning or melodramatic, just honest.
So I think I'll leave you all to it for a while, with my best wishes to you all.
Can I just say one more thing though, & I don't mean it to sound self-righteous, or holier-than-thou; you know I still eat meat sometimes. But we all do actually realise, don't we, that there's nothing actually addictive about any kind of meat/poultry product? Some of us might be used to eating it, have been eating it for as long as we can remember, but it's certainly not a drug. It's a conscious choice everytime.

DaveM - in all fairness, I would point out that the level of anger & aggression in the comments is directly proportionate to the anger & agression (as well as harsh judgementalism) that Mr. Kilbey dished out onto his fans.
I agree with Mr. Kilbey on this issue and appreciate his passion, but I also understand the hurt & resentment that his harsh personal attacks brought. No one likes to be judged & no one likes to be personally attacked by someone they like or respect, and that is what Steve has done.
One thing I have come to appreciate about Steve through his blog is that he is imperfect & full of the same defects that all of us have. He has less faults than some, more faults than others. His blog just the ohter day pointed that out. This whole issue & how it has been handled is just an example of that - at least it is honest which is a credit to him I believe.

I thought I might mention what an effect being a vegan has had on my life. Six years ago I was diagnosed with Lupus SLE which is a serious autoimmune disease that can be life threatening.
Initally I felt like I had arthritis and wondered what was going on. I ended up not being able to move and having to be carried. I likened it to feeling like I was 200 years old wih bones made of dead wood. Lupus affected my joints and liver. I could not even turn on a light switch, put shoes on because my hands and feet were too swollen etc. I also experienced immense fatigue.
Over the next six years my conditon improved but I was still fatigued and my health was up and down. For around two of those years, I was in bed around 18 hours a day because I was so fatigued.
Once I became a vegan my fatigue and joint pain that I had been suffering all this time disappeared. Becoming vegan was the best thing I've ever done.
At the beginning I had really bad blood tests but now they are perfect.
I have since found out that casein in dairy irritates the immune system and should be avoided if you have an immune problem. Why don't doctors tell you this??
I know this is a long entry but my parents who have always given me grief for being vegetarian and vegan haven't eaten meat now for 2 months and going strong. They are in their early sixties. It's never too late!
Anyway, SK, MTV and I were toasting you earlier with a Jaegermeister! Don't worry, it's herbal! ;-)

Some of us here are on the road to find out, as Cat Yussef Stevens once put it, and one doesn't always arrrive at the same time as others. Some never get to that particular point. We have been raised with so much hype over meat, and dairy, that it's hard to totally let go of it and think that perhaps you will be even healthier, rather than lacking iron, lacking energy,lacking calcium and strong bones and teeth, not growing up "big and strong".
As 2007 dawns I am re-examining everything I think about the way I live, about what my family needs, about the sustainablility of how that food is produced, the energy, land-clearing, trucking, refigeration and water cost of it, the growth hormones, the antibiotics, the animal cruelty of calves taken from their mothers to lead short lives raised in the dark for veal while their hapless mothers are dosed with hormones to increase their milk production to frantic levels, which increases mastitus and pain, which increases infection, so that there's traces of pus and antibiotics in that milk we drink. Cows are just living udders producing milk for humans who shouldn't be eating it, especially now we're grown. Then there's the contamination of the food chain with animal products/animal waste fed back to grazing animals, which lead to mad cow disease etc. Domestic birds have been important in the spread of bird flu.
Beef cattle stand all day in the sun because all the trees have been cleared until it's time to die.
Non free range chickens lay eggs in cages the size of a tiny toilet, on our scale. Their legs are deformed because they have to stand up on wire their whole lives, unable to interract or move, escape or die until humans say the time has come.
Sows are bolted down to prevent them rolling on their expensive piglets, unable to bond with them, just again living udders till it's time to die. This is how your prok, ham and bacon is prepared for your plate -without even going into the presevervatives and their links to cancer, especially bowell cancer.
Some farm animals may live reasonable lives but many don't. We have to stop buying meat made this way, and dairy made this way. We'll probably be a lot healthier for it. We have to think about sustainability of our food choices, not just our lazy old habits and assumptions, if we want the earth to survive beyond recent human degredation of it.
It's obvious that the way human beings are acting in their "dominion" over this world is mostly disgusting, stupid and cruel beyond belief. I'm still learning about how animals are farmed today and the more I learn the sicker I feel. Do some research, those who are offended. Maybe we should use Steve's anger as the trigger to investigate just what we're doing.
What's the downside - we learn something?
When Gary Numan came to Australia he would opnly eat mcDonalds. He liked them because they were standardised all around the world.
That aside, 'Cars' and 'Are Friends Electric' are cool, sad, disjointed pinnacles of synthetic 80's numbness; I always love hearing them and the lyrics are sheer poetry.

Wow....I've been gone for a week and missed all the "controversy" and maybe that ain't bad. Work travel has me falling behind, but - this is yer blogge, SK, and "you can celebrate any thing you want." That's why I tune in - hoping for honest opinions, the unvarnished monologues. You supply 'em, and I enjoy 'em. Maybe I'm veering towards the sycophantic pole, maybe I ain't.......because I still eat fish and seafood, having given up the mammals and birds a while ago. I've been changing and evolving for years.

Hey there steve0. I respect your ideas and beliefs about meat. I actually stopped eating meat for about two weeks because of reading your blog. I actually felt better, and more healthy, but its such a staple of the american diet, its kind of hard to go around sometimes. The truth is, when you eat meat, it weighs down the spirit and the soul. I really think that. Ill always read the blog stephen.

Another reason I started coming here was my massive appreciation for your work with Jeffrey Cain on "Isidore." I connected so much with that album that it brought me back as a fan. Nice Tubeway Army reference, and great song title to make a point, ha! But it's not just carrots that scream...it's a harrowing experience whenever I chop up a zucchini screaming, "Vegetable rights!" Makes it a bit cumbersome preparing meals ya know.
To fantasticandy who posted yesterday: I recall you were asking about meals that you could provide for your family that tasted as good as meat. If you really do like the taste of meat, there are lots of products out there that taste amazingly similar to the real thing.
If you're in America you could always try Smart Dogs which taste EXACTLY like hot dogs. Also something called Smart Bacon which is quite tasty when fried up. There are lots of ground beef substitutes on the market that you can use to put in tacos or anything that you would normally use ground beef for and there isn't any of that disgusting grease in the pan afterwards. Also, Quorn products are an excellent choice provided you and your family don't have any allergies to fungus or mushrooms in general as this is not a soy product and some people have fallen ill not knowing what these products were made of.
There are excellent chicken patty substitutes out there but like all the rest of what I listed above you need to experiment with different products to find the ones that you like the best. I even tried a salisbury steak made out of soy protein once and it was so close to the real thing that I couldn't finish it because it really did taste like a salisbury steak. Yikes!!
Remember with tofu that it takes on the taste of whatever you cook it with, so mix it well with the sauces and veggies of your choice and it's actually delicious. Experiment to your heart's content and you and your family will be healthy and also enjoy some very tasty meals. Best of luck! :-)

You don’t know Sue Cee at all. Environmentalist. Goddamn right. She lives on a huge isolated property and 8000ac of that is untamed natural scrubland that she and her husband manage on their own and maintain at their own expense – native animals run wild on their place and have the luxury of using their dam water for drinking. No lakes or running rivers out there. What do you seriously do for the environment that actually involves physical pain or giving up maybe the luxury of your lifestyle?? To keep this farm going they have a very minimal amount of stock – sheep they raise for wool and a few goats who live out a long and happy life in their huge paddocks – no factory farming here. They plant their wheat crops and battle so many things to keep their heads above water ie drought, govt restrictions, isolation and not being near their kids. She probably hasn’t responded right now because she’s out there working in the hot sun or working at her other jobs, she has like 3 or 4 jobs going at once. Friend of Steves? She’s given years and years of unpaid love and devotion to Steve and The Church promoting their music and art to the big wide world. She’s even trying to convert her husband to vegetarianism, a died in the wool generational farmer type guy who is quite capable of hunting his own food if he had to. I think he fishes on occasion but he’s also the biggest animal lover you could meet. She’s had politicians at her place constantly trying to convince them to listen to her environmental arguments and Im talking about the THE top politicians.
Fuck you QOS. Sorry sweet Sue but that just pissed me off that comment because I could see what you were saying even if she took you the wrong way. I'd be damn proud to be HER friend.

Along with the vego gospel we get to hear about what's happening in someone's life- just accept it or tune out.
I personally enjoy hearing the mindscape of a person who grapples with the same issues i sometimes do. This week it's a residual belief in gOD. Next week it will be something else. It's all good.

I'm totally with you Steve. Every word. There was a period in the early nineties when it became quite hip to become a vegerarian. I was already one by that stage. But then strangely by the year 2000, every friend I had who had become a vegetarian had returned to meat/fish/chicken habits. I was the only one left standing. If anybody could point me in the direction of literature precisely linking global warming to the worldwide meat habit I would be very appreciative. Steve , you mention an article in this blog entry, where was it?
In the meantime, keep fighting the good fight Steve, it won't happen in this lifetime but one day, not so far away, meat eating will be seen for exactly what it is, weak willed gluttony.
Queen OS and anon, I did not express myself very well, I can see that in the way it reads back. And I meant freedom of choice to read and think (something we westerners have). That other comment was my 'pathetic' as you say attempt at humour.

Sometimes, when the inevitable despair sets in over how much cruelty is accepted as the normal, healthy way of things (see: meat industry), I take a little encouragement when I think of how many previously 'normal' cruel practices have become taboo (slavery, child labor, etc., etc.), at least in many parts of the world.
And then I get frustrated again that I live in an age that's still so stupid (that is, willfully ignorant), and that my whole life will be spent in this frustratingly unenlightened setting. Oh well. Maybe that will always be the way.
