a midwestern prayer

vishnu the preserver
iesus christos
krishna the avatar
and then next
buddha
and all prophets n seers n sages
n angels of the ages
bless this holy earth
the dreamy misty lakes
the green pointillistic trees a'swayin
the kind hearted people
the chemical factory guys who start work at 5 am
the broken down suburbs on the way in
the audiences in the darkness
the cops n the villains
the schoolhood buddies who got high together
the endless rivers of traffic
the gifts we receive
the girls with busted noses n single dads
the truckers swaying thru the night
the warm night
endless rolling undulating
the traintracks
the wire fences
the guys who got married too young
the history
the maverick quality
bless everyone
whoever you are out there
you always have answered my prayers
let these people get a little abundance
send their dreams to em with bells on
let everyone be a rockstar for 15 minuets
be fruitful
increase
gauge the truth
one sparrow worth more
than all them silver machines buzzin' chicago today
i got glass in my big toe
my little toe is sliced open on a bed leg
no hotel tonite
milwaukee all accom sold out
deliver us from evil
send me home

Bless you, Steve. A lovely prayer from a beautiful soul. I hope you were joking about not having a place to crash. Of course theye are having some sort of Irish Festival in Milwaukee, is that the reason? If I did live up there I would offer my house to you and the fellas in a heartbeat. Hell, I offer my place to you guys anytime, except I am back in Chicago! I am 10 minutes from O'Hare Int. and we have plenty of room. No joke. We have select crashers quite often, as we are fortunate to have the space, just me and the miss. Alright, you guys please take care and we'll see you again soon. Be good...

aw, jeez~~so tired you can't stand it and you don't have a place to sleep. so that probably means you'll have to get on the road after the show to go out of town to find something....no rest for the weary olde hippy.....

take care of your foot. ouch!! that's all you need, huh? to have to be on it for the next few hours, trying to play a gig with a cut up, sore foot. well, after tomorrow night you'll be going home, and you can prop it up.

thanks for the prayers. and here's one for you.....

Thanks for that Sunday blessing sk, but it sounds like you need a prayer for those bleeding toes...ouch!!!

Is it one show to go? Good luck and go easy on that foot tapping tonight!

I hope you recover swiftly. Maybe you can find a soft bed not too far down the road.

When this passes, I'd love to hear how you thought the shows/audiences/performances were in Cleveland, Chicago, and Milwaukee.

Peace.

One more thought... I want to thank you for inspiring me to pray. It worked.

Remember how I told you (backstage Cleveland while smoking "Ohio's Finest") that I also have terrible howling tinnitus as a result of an ear balance disorder? The worst symptoms are vertigo and disequilibrium (perpetual motion sickness). I've had this condition for 3 years, with the last year being nearly intolerable, even after seeing 4 doctors. Well the last round of vertigo hit me in early June. I was sick for 2 days straight and when the spinning stopped, for a whole week everything bounced when I walked or moved my head. Uhhhhg.

So I remembered what you said about asking god for help, when you just can't take it anymore, because he can reach through and hear and help. Well, I was at wits end. I wanted anything to end this ongoing daily suffering. I asked for peace louder than I ever asked for anything. Two days later, the pressure in my ear went away, the disequilibrium stopped for the first rest in 1.5 years. I've been feeling great since then. Going on 9 weeks. I feel like a new person.

Thank you for the inspiration. I think that your Midwestern Prayer will be answered.

BTW, what I have is called Meniere's Disease. It is now believed that Van Gogh had this. And look what he did to solve it. You can certainly see the inspiration of vertigo in his art. I wonder if Van Gogh thought it was worth all that suffering. Certainly he would have been a great artist without vertigo as added inspiration. For me, nothing would be worth the kind of torture I had endured for 3 years.

A groundhog has taken up residence in the woods behind the house. Good. It'll give the creature hanging around the house (looks something like a border collie ... I've been feeding it dog food for years, at any rate and it hasn't left yet) something to bark at. If it can remember how to bark. I sometimes think it was kicked out of canine school. Not too quick on the uptake, if you catch my drift.

Looking at the tour schedule, it sounds like you and the lads need something more along the lines of a wormhole (instead of a groundhog hole) to make it to the next gig. Mapquest estimates it at over 2000 miles and 31.6 hours driving time.

Put the Foghat CD on replay and burn out the "Drivin Wheel" track. Bummer about Rod Price biting the stairs last year . . . he played a wicked slide guitar.

Me thinks you're going to need at least a mostly alluminum and steel machine (silver's too costly for an aeroplane)
to make it to SF on time.

But then, who knows what wonders The Time Being can perform?

Bummer about the toes. I nearly took a nail off one of mine years ago and it's not been right since (the nail, not the toe). It wants to grow in crazy directions. It has no manners, I tell ya!

Oh Steve,
If someone told me 20 years ago that my favourite singer-songwriter/poet/writer in the entire world would be sitting alone in his sleazy hotel room, feeling all those sad things, 5 floors above my sleazy hotel room, I would've said they were insane. But alas, after the show, there I was, on the 5th floor of same said sleazy hotel room (could you believe that place??? I swear I didn't know you guys were staying there - someone told me to stay there...BTW, the windows there DID open, I tried it, and the sleaze factor made me consider leaping out...heh) lying on the bed, watching a fly buzz around the room, not wanting to kill it, but wanting it to go away. I think that place had serious lonely, sad vibes to it. Well, at least I had the fly for company. Anyway, just got home from LAX - I would like to say some really nice things about the Chicago show and I WILL, but my cats decided to get sick in 20 different places around the apartment so I'm now cleaning that up. It's not glamorous just being a fan either! ;)
I know how badly you want to get home...you're almost there, hang on. I can't believe I can be in the same room with you and still miss your blogs so much! Finally, I can get my bloggy fill now.

Steve,
Well que sera sera w/my carpets...seems everyone has said everything there is to say about Chicago! I will say the show was MORE than worth two flights and a sleazy hotel...L.A. treated you horribly! You deserved so much better and I'm so, so, so happy I came out to see you at the Park West. That verison of Reptile was the highlight of my night - it was creepy, yet sexy. Creepy sexy! I had chills - I can still hear it! Sitting in front of MWP, watching him during Grind was utterly amazing....can his fingers move ANY faster? Tim is a monster on the drums, Peter is the eternal essential - brilliant no matter where he is, what he's playing...and you HAVE turned into Paul Stanley! The kicks! The ballet moves! The crazy dancing! The pelvic thrusts! The Elizabethan banter! I thought, "Hmmm, someone's feeling no pain this evening..." I've never seen you so animated. It was a treat; you had such a twinkle in your eyes. Davida was a delight, Rob was Rob (i.e. fabulous)and Petra is a doll. BTW, except for the woman who could NOT stop telling you she loved you ("Lady, I'm deaf as a post!") I thought the crowd was lovely and I was proud to be in the midst of such nice people for a change. I was born and raised in L.A. but so many people out here have no manners. Chicagoans (sp?) are so nice. I enjoyed the city, the restaurants, the Art Institute, the architecture....but not the humidity and rain, ha. Seriously, what a great crowd.

Steven, you are a gracious, lovely, classy, kind gentleman. Thank you for everything...and for taking a moment at the end of the evening for me when you weren't feeling so well.

I know how badly you want to get home - who can blame you - I'm gone three days and be it ever so humble, there's no place like home. I wish you a safe flight, and both quality and quantity time with all of your beloved ladies. Please tell NK, the doodles and even Scarlet, that we say "THANK YOU!" for being without hubby/dad for over a month. You are more appreciated than you will ever, ever know.
love,

So I'm sitting in a quaint, tiny-tiny hotel room in SF - a place I've never seen before. It's cool because I've never taken a flight involving air travel where I wasn't EXPECTED BY SOMEONE or OBLIGATED TO SOMETHING. It's rather adult. European desk clerk disapproves of me when I get there - something to do with my Hello Kitty t-shirt, dirty cargo pants, hoodie and skateboard shoes (good for walking). The handle of my suitcase got busted in transit.

Later, after a nap and a bath, he was much more accomodating and the eyebrow was back down where it should've been. I clean up okay. Grey will get you everywhere. I ask him if it's okay for a lady to go out and meander around O'Farrell this time of night. He says yes, just to watch out for the homeless people. Same rap I got from the cab driver in, only he said to watch out for the drug dealers. Funny how different people's fears of people are different.

Five minutes out the door and I have a new friend. "Wanna get high?" Doesn't mix with my chemistry these days. "No sir," I said. "That's cool, then." He crossed the street but turned his head to flash me a smile. "Gotcher back if you change your mind." What friendly purveyors. (!) Nice dreads.

I think I caught the diss coming in because I booked this thing on priceline and they ain't making much money off ME. But here I am in a fantastic new place, on an adventure and it isn't even Columbus Day. Another gift, if indirectly, from The Church. They just keep coming, like ripples. S'why I'll never stop listening. It's bottomless. It has no ceiling. I love all you guys. <3

I like the ethnic grocery around the corner too. But not as much as you lot.

Oooh. I meant to say that it's interesting how different people's fears are OF different PEOPLE. The European clerk and the homeless. The East Indian cabbie and the drugs. On the flight I sat behind a family from Spain and played my bad-grammar espanol games with the little girls. Behind me were boys studing Hebrew. I really wished I understood some of their words..exotic. I wish I spoke every language. I'll have to settle for being happy to just hear it.

All the melancholy
And the prayers
A thousand boys and girls trying on your face
Banging away in their bedrooms the world over
Trying to get it out
Trying to say it
Just so
The way they hear it being whispered
Old. They grow old
Trying to give a voice to the voiceless murmur
And nobody hears them
Or recognises them in the street
Their world is no mirror
Just flat glass
Their muse is the same as yours
There are only nine, after all
But you were the one they allowed to speak on their behalf
And for this
If nothing else
You should be thankful
Amen

Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)
Song by Don McClean

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they did not how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as
beautiful as you

Starry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They did not listen they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will

Starfish mentioned Van Gogh and this song immediately came to mind
it reminds me very much of you also
thank you for your prayer, it was beautiful and very touching
I pray for you too!
Hope you were able to find rest last night, I'm so relieved that this is almost over for you,
believe it or not, we've been suffering right along with you (though not in the same way, obviously)
but when you hurt, so do we
be safe

love and peace to you

A hotel unknowingly inhabited with fans, and you alone in your room? How bizarre that sounds. Sorry to hear about your wretched toe and the crummy room, and being roomless! I’ll bet you said a few choice words because damn it hurts like hell when you stub a toe, let alone cut it open. Well one of my neighbours told me that equestrian people use ye old manuka honey on their expensive horses if they get any cuts or gashes – they smother the wound with honey, wrap it and hey presto... so there you go - toe protectorant if u can find some!

Easy travels sk, its been amazing being on the sidelines with you...and your fans here! Hope you dont remember this as the 'Grind' tour or give us this day, our daily grind ...for we forgive those who trespassed against you (or maybe not) Ahh, there's nothing quite like home Dorothy. And your own bed! Bet you've missed your tubes of paints and empty canvases - make that last gig a killer!!

SK-

Man I just can't help it - this weekend is Church Celebration regardless where I am and you are. Glad the cats in ol' Milwaukee brought ya back - your buddy is happy that you miss him and want to remember him but he was getting a little upset that you were letting it effect YOUR livin', ya dig? The Cats of Milwaukee brought ya back, but how could they not (fine and friendly peoples, them Wisconsiners - everyone. Though their claims to Da U.P. are greviously mistaken!)

Good luck tonight, SK, bum footie and all. Every poster on this bloggie wishes they could jump a jet plane and be in San Fran. I'll be workin' too and will most likely be listenin' to your CD'S all night. Sock it to'em good, Space Rockers!

Incidentally, and I know you'll think me doofus and laugh at my poor taste, but I want ya to know that I no longer have any Beatle CD's (not even Revolver) but I got every Church CD since "Blurred Crusade" - an' I wouldn't even trade a one for Revolver (except maybe "Quick Smoke at Spot's" but I'd think about it first!). That's what I think of you guys - thanks for stoppin' by the U.S. and expecially Ferndale (much safer and nicer than Deetroit!)

You Groovy Cats in San Francisco -
Send the boys off in style tonight. Know that there's Church fans wishin' they were there with ya - so's scream and hoot just a little louder and make'em realize they aren't the old hippies or 80's hacks they sometimes feel to be but the REAL and vibrant Artists that they are (for example - how many artists are able to redo so many of their past works and make them better? Not many could do that - I'm not sayin' each is a gem but it is evidence of Artistic Greatness). And make sure they don't leave town without hearin' "Jazzy Reptile" (a blessing, perhaps, lost to Time
passing so slowly
yet amazingly quick
away .... ?)

Our instruments have no way of measuring this feeling
Can never cut below the floor, or penetrate the ceiling.
In the space between our houses, some bones have been discovered,
But our procession lurches on, as if we had recovered.

Draconian winter unforetold.
One solar day, suddenly you're old.
Your little envelope just makes me cold,
Makes destination start to unfold.

Our documents are useless, or forged beyond believing.
Page forty-seven is unsigned, I need it by this evening.
In the space between our cities, a storm is slowly forming.
Something eating up our days, I feel it every morning.
Destination, destination.

It's not a religion, its just a technique.
Its just a way of making you speak.
Distance and speed have left us too weak,
And destination looks kind of bleak.

Our elements are burned out, our beasts have been mistreated.
I tell you its the only way well get this road completed.
In the space between our bodies, the air has grown small fingers.
Just one caress, you're powerless, like all those clapped-out swingers.
Destination, destination.

Ha! You mean the one in Chicago constantly professing her drunken love for SK? Ah no. I had no dinner either, but since I'm a true lightweight, I didn't drink. This woman obviously had had MORE than a few - although I truly believe she loves SK - and what's not to love??? ; )But SK knows I love him like my slightly older brother, haha. I don't need to scream it out in the middle of a show!!! LOL! Seriously, she became obnoxious pretty fast, huh Chicago?

SK - you might find this funny BTW; I meant to mention it - you know Hare Krishnas aren't what they used to be are they? I was 'gently' accosted by one at O'Hare...they dress like airport employees now, which is what I thought this guy was. He immediately started telling me I had good Karma. Which is great, but I said, "What about the pilot? And the mechanics? How's their Karma? How's my plane's Karma?" ; ) Must've been good because the flight was perfect. He was a sweet man who tried to give me a huge hardcover copy of the Bhagavad Vita. I declined as I seriously couldn't handle one more item in my carry on. I don't like being preached to, but he was very nice actually and I wished him well. It probably helped that I am a believer of Karma and a lot of things he tried to talk to me about.

SK - having problems w/the dvd - about to throw my computer out the f-in window. I'll write and let you know when I finally pull it together!

"Lonely is the room, the bed is made, the open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams he had you with him
My body turns and yearns for a sleep that will never come

It's never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over, all my riches for her smiles when i slept so soft against her
It's never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over, she's the tear that hangs inside my soul forever"

Great jb song sk ...playing at a myspace near you

Turned me on to J Buckley, never gave much attention. Good stuff. Thanks for all the sacrifice put in so we all could enjoy those moments never to be forgotten. More than just a good show when the positive vibrations extend past the theater walls. I was amazed how natural and effortless your voice sounded, i hope you guys captured some live takes.

Thanks for a beautiful evening in SF last night SK, it rocked. Just do us one favor next time. and leave Rob Dickinson at home.

what was wrong with Rob? I thought he was a brilliant opener.

I hate to be negative, but I found his lyrics insipid -as cheesy as the worst of hallmark cards and his guitar playing unispiring. The comparisons to Radiohead left me aghast. It took me several Church songs to get over the hangover.

many a mind nugget you have provided during your sojourn through our land of many contrasts....
I am happy that you have an inner drive to play your music live as it provides joy for so many people...
strangely I feel sadness that you will soon be leaving our shores even though it has been many weeks since I saw you on your Dallas stop...
Perhaps it is this dang blog that is causing this malady...
Anyway thanks again for a wonderful evening and enjoy your family on your return...
Those kiddos will keep you on the run but coming from a father of twins myself they sure are fun aren't they? Peace SK....

Lonnnnng SF account:

We kept SK and the rest of the lads up late last night, we actually threw in the towel well before they did and I didn't get home until 2 AM!
It was a soaring evening, Marty calling for POSITIVITY, right after soundcheck and I believe it did happen.
Of course there were the typical spattering of requests which are now becoming like fingernails on a chalkboard but they were minimal, praise the goddesses.
Steve was light on his toes despite the glass, voice immaculate and making up lyrics here and there ("Sometimes when this morgue is kind of empty...")Marty was a blur on guitar and right on the mark with his vocals. Peter on mandolin, harmonica and piano gave each song a new depth and he seemed very amused by his fellow musicians' antice. Tim held everything together and show us his less concusive side when at the piano. One observation: Marty plays drums con mucho coraje! I thought the drumkit was going to explode!
We were treated to 3 encores and to UNGUARDED MOMENT which had never been played in Northern California before, ever, ever - so yeah, you think that was a treat? The place went mad; you guessed it, several standing Os. They deserved it, I mean here it was the finish line, they were exhausted having slept at the fkn venue the night before AND they didn't give us any excuses, they gave us their ENTIRE SOUL, it was amazing and honestly defies description.
Some stage banter:
Steve "How can I become the next Jerry Garcia?"
Marty: "Get fatter!"
Steve: "Why Phish and why not The Church?"
Marty: "We'd have to spell Church with a K."
Steve:"This song we can play in Palm Springs."
Marty "Emerson, Lake and Palm Springs."
Steve:"It doesn't matter what I drink or smoke, nothing has an effect on me."
Marty: "That's because you're 78!"
You get the picture, it was just fkn brilliant and everyone was digging on the great vibes although I did have a drunk Joe Jackson lookalike sit next to me who insisted on behaving like a drunk shouting out the last word Steve would utter during a story. Steve would say "Milwaukee..." and drunk Joe would scream "MILWAUKEE!"
People, why?
But let's not focus on that loser... bottom line there was much hippy, trippy love for the band and we felt it ripple back towards us. I'm sure someone will post the set list and I believe it didn't much vary with the exception of Unguarded Moment. The smokey, slinky jazzed downed Reptile is very tasty.
Can't wait until 2008!
Besos,
Cecilia
Thanks to MWP, SK, TP, Tiare and all the bloggy friends that were there that I didn't get to meet...next time.

Well, tour's done and I didn't get to a show. C'est la vie...I have lived vicariously through the rest of you these past few weeks.

Safe travels home to SK and associates...you've earned a solid stretch of rest.

SK,

Fantastic SF show. Harp was sublime. Female roadcrew was glorious. And the sound? Well, it was the church so no need to lay another layer of accolades on that. I hope Devita (spelling?) found some good company for the evening. Petra (i think was her name working the shirts/cds table) couldn't convince me to stay out late given my recent exploding appendix trick. Thanks to you and the guys for a great evening. I hope you don't stay away for another two years before we see you again.

SK,
safe travels back to the homeland. Thanks for making my B-Day the most memorable in Chicago. Thanks "stealthblue" (Ben and Krystna)...for the Bday wishes and the crazy evening. Even the stalking and siteing of SK was thrilling. What a gentleman he was. Wish him and his family all the best.
