I had to laugh sk when after reading this blog I scrolled down and there were, wait for it, 0 comments.. but then again it's only 4.04pm. I'm sure there'll be heaps soon enough. If everyone who read your blog commented there surely would be thousands of comments daily. I read it religiously and this is only the 3rd time I've commented. Usually the comments are tripe, but then again at least people bother.

On Self-Knowledge

And a man said, "Speak to us of Self-Knowledge."

And he answered, saying:

Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and the nights.

But your ears thirst for the sound of your heart's knowledge.

You would know in words that which you have always know in thought.

You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams.

And it is well you should.

The hidden well-spring of your soul must needs rise and run murmuring to the sea;

And the treasure of your infinite depths would be revealed to your eyes.

But let there be no scales to weigh your unknown treasure;

And seek not the depths of your knowledge with staff or sounding line.

For self is a sea boundless and measureless.

Say not, "I have found the truth," but rather, "I have found a truth."

Say not, "I have found the path of the soul." Say rather, "I have met the soul walking upon my path."

For the soul walks upon all paths.

The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed.

The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.

oh well okay, here's something, what's a de tuned f# sound like?
can music be described with words, i try to all the time but it seems kinda like i am only halfway there. i mean a picture can be described with words, not brilliantly but it transalates, music is kinda different though.
and while we are on the subject of wierd shit, what does a (born) blind person dream about?
(I rang the blind society and they had no answer)
these thoughts are making me head hurt.

ps i love reading yr blog and the comments, even the aggro ones, i can't believe how many people attack ya for expressing your point of veiw, it's a strange world man.

I'm still here, dude.

We can talk about the cardboard box again if you'd like....that seems to make you cranky resulting in lots of comments.....but mostly you don't provoke a response from me everyday.

Some days you are not provocative.

I think what everyone here is really enjoying is the access to you, as it is so rare to have this kind of channel to a public figure. That's why everyone reads, isn't it....?

Lots of ppl seem to enjoy your writing so keep on keeping on, and remember you can't please all the people all the time you old scoundrel.

Hello I am guilty of reading and not writing. But I am still out here. So hello!

I very nearly told the story about the time I challenged a bunch of old guys to a Jagermeister drinking challenge at the German Club here in Adelaide many years ago. I was doing quite well until I got drunk enough to mention the war. Even my parents were proud...up until a certain point. I think there are many morals to that story, starting with don't go to the German Club with your parents.

But anyway I didn't tell that story, but I was still out here.

Love your work. Even your earlier "anti-straight" work.

Beloved Steve,

to say the quality and worth of your blog posts is measured by the number of comments is akin to saying the value of a record is measured in its sales.

So then,

Donny Osmond pisses all over The Stooges,

Foghat beat Leonard Cohen hands down,

Boney M's towering genius mocks Cowboy Junkies' very existence,

and as we all know, Westlife are incalculably better than The Church,

right?

Your readers are not numbers.

More, many read and don't write, not wanting to say something if there's nothing to say.

Just cos I don't have an immediate burning opinion to express doesn't mean you haven't given me something to think about.

Sure, the specific issue-based stuff gets more comments, cos we already have opinions on that stuff. But the personal meanders and anecdotes are brillint, they imbue us with a sense of how it feels to be you, they take your feelings and make it so we can feel them too (if we're open).

You know the world would be a better place if more people could get the intelligent and compassionate approach you have; letting them understand it and feel it is surely a step in that direction. That's something that all your writing does, if anything more so with the less incendiary material.

Any fool can write something to make people stand up and complain. You're better than that. It's worth is not measured by little numbers.

Well Mr Kilbey. Heres a comment for ya. I read everyday cus I (and my good lady wifey) are lifelong Church fans. We have an 18 month old bambino with another on the way.

During the first pregnancy we put the headphones on the bump and played UTMW, no cus it was our favourite church tune but because it was good and unlikely to cause great upset after the hundredth playing. We had read that iif the bubba hears a tune in utero then if and when said bub becomes grumpy "on the outside" it is a simple matter of playing the chosen tune and peace will decend on the kingdom. Well blow me down if it didn't work a treat. So from then on lots of UTMW for us and baby who is now a very happy and well adjusted toddler. You are known in our most inner circle of 3.5 as Uncle Steve.

Now you would think that someone called Uncle Steve would deserve a hello, how ya going at a gig but to be honest you intimidate me, I have often caught your eye but have not detected any invitation to converse. Now MWP is quite the opposite and not the least intimidating. You (as you have admitted many times) come across as a bit of a grumpy fucker. That said you are also V funny and the blog can bring a tear to my eye at times, and at other times cause me to declare you an arrogant wanker. All in all you are a most interesting character and the world would be if not poorer, then at least more dull without you.

In short, do not doubt that there are a legion of quiet readers out here lapping up the daily dose of Dr. Kilby.

Keep up the great work.

PS not wanting to offend any of the kind folks who so regularly comment, but many of these comments make we want to gag. "Thank you, Steve, oh Steve you are so woonderful.....Steve, those folks you yelled at during the gigi deserved no less, they are philistines...... "

PPS At the risk of joining the above - ULTC's is a wonderful album! We love it, baby #2 will be getting a serve just as soon as the ears can hear.

Yeah......

The suck-ups are pretty tedious and boring. An when you say something about it they go fucking berserk defending themselves.

They are almost as annoying as the 'anons'...

damien said...

Does Steve Kilbey himself really read these comments, or does some young record company office girl give him the gist of them while she fans him and peels grapes for him? :-)

There are many times I am moved to respond to your blogs, Steve. The blogs I like best are the reminiscences on your youth or stories about the travails of catching a plane, or the vignettes about domestic life at chez Kilbey. You know, the everyday stuff that gives us an insight into the ordinary bloke behind the rock god facade.

I think your rants on the war are probably true but kind of naive in that left-wing hippy way, your poems I only read if I'm in the mood to read a poem and the complaints about the drudgery of touring leave me cold because, while I'm sure that "The Glamour" is under Marty's shoe, you still live the kind of life that hundreds (if not thousands) of people dream about and to us you are one lucky bastard.

OMG SK! Don't stop yon goode bloggy. Please. I've still been reading the whole time even if I didn't send you a comment praising your vivid imagination and dashing wit (which are ever-present, of course). I love reading your blog and I tune in for it every single day.

Don't get so down now. There will be plenty of time to be sulky and moody on tour in America ... the 1000 degree heat ... with the overage college frat boys yelling "Milky Way" all through the acoustic set.

My, what a critical bunch we are! I say, let them give praise! After all, the guy is giving up heaps of his time to do this blog thing. Give us this day our daily blog!

Steve, I didn’t realize the comments meant so much to you! I do try to contribute and aim not to bore. I too read daily and admittedly did miss my fix yesterday. I like to sit at my computer reading your blog while drinking my Chinese herbs. Your blog is a pleasant distraction from the reality of my life at the moment. The past seven weeks have been such a difficult time for me and my family. You have helped give me strength through your positive words and prayers, and I will always remember you for that. Wish I could give you a big hug! Well here’s a virtual one any way. Writing this has brought tears to my eyes. I was a huge Go Betweens fan and reading your words about Grant really helped with the grieving.

I recently read about Johanna Brandt, The Grape Cure lady (I think I will give it a go, though a bit worried about losing too much weight), you’ve got me eating Manuka honey (16+), drinking Pitta tea (I’m Pitta Vata), I started reading about dosha types and as a result my 7 year-old daughter is sleeping better at night due to drinking Vata tea. I’m off to my first meditation class tomorrow night. I’m even considering the vegan way of life. Who would have ever imagined?

Academia would have suited you!

Hoping a bit of wealth comes your way.

My apologies in advance, if I cause any of you readers to gag.

I watched it few times already, and I am just really impressed with the overall sound and picture quality. Really does look professional, and was almost like being there. I will have a copy sent to you soon (in Atlanta). I hope you will like it. I said it before, but will say again, thanks for taking the time to write your blog. Its easily my favorite blog, and I learn alot from it, and also find it often inspiring. Will miss it when its gone, but will appreciate it as long as its here.

Oh, the pressure! :)

Well Steve, I enjoy reading your blogs every day and its usually the first thing I check when Im near a pc. Your topics vary in such huge degrees, from the topical to the tropical which is why they're so damn interesting but the ones I enjoy the most are the everyday observations on life around you ie the doodles, drunken ants, Bondi, customs dramas on tour etc and your memories of the past. Also like to hear your music choices as they've often shocked me!

Id really like to hear more about your songwriting class and what kind of advice you give to someone starting out. Do you give them ideas on finding inspiration or are there some actual tricks up your sleeve that you can deal out when inspiration is hiding? Do you think that these days it comes down to just being a good arranger? ... now that all the good songs are taken LOL

You dont talk much about your painting and thats a huge part of your life! Im curious about that, especially abstract as I find them the hardest to do.

You would've made a wonderful grumpy professor, in a shabby suit with lop-sided spectacles... the kind who could give the class a good argument.

How about a game of Exquisite corpse?

Hey man,

In fact I still do, It is a dream come true for me this blogg thing that you are doing. Without your good self I think my interests would be markedly different than they are. You have enriched my life. When I listen to ramble on the first Jack Frost record, I think wow, that Is the essence of essence, I love it it puts hairs on the back of my kneck

ok, u win - here i sit, undertaking that most enervating of tasks - writing a public service job application - all 'outcomes focussed, team player, thinking outside the square'. Methinks, I'll skive off for a minute - check out Kilbey's blog - plagiarise his words for the enlightenment of the grey-suited bureaucrats - give 'em some gold-plated philosophy mixed with a big spoon of diatribe and a dollop of fatherly anecdote - that'll impress em - then i can spend my remaining days in cardigan-warmed comfort, milking the long -suffering taxpayer for all he's worth.

Actually, walked past a colleague's desk the other day and saw ULTC in all its glory - you've made it back into the office! (there's a nightmare for you). Turns out we were both at the excellent green room gig (november?) for a fix of high culture.

Keep on bloggin' - it's a big highlight for this otherwise uninspired servant of the people.

Steve--> I recall during your heady days at the top of the charts, you sayin' - and i'm paraphrasing - something about your music having very little to do with who you are as a person, which I found inane at the time, but then again I was very new to irony.

So here you are, ego at the fore, trolling for comments on your blog. Well, here's some smoke to put where you will:

Had I not been wearing that Heyday shirt on the quad back in college before I never finished, I wouldn't a'met a good friend I still have these many years on.

Had I not heard It's No Reason, Into My Hands, and on and on, I wouldn't a'started my own band which was more of a Church cover band...until I found my own way.

Had Ploog not plucked us whippersnappers out of the parking lot and into a very adult world all of a sudden replete with strange elixers and loud tribal, chimey toons...well, let's just say it's kind of a magic moment for a youngster...

So, though you coulda been Professor Kilbey, pontificating under fluorescent glow, some of us are glad you put that off. It's not too late. Worked for Rodney Dangerfield, didn't it?

Your blog is a central part of my life. I know I'm a bit of a gag-inducing stalker type at times. I can live with that. I read every day, though i may not comment. You're music has made such a difference.
Charge us for the blog if you're broke!! Keep it reasonable tho??
love you more,

O>K. I'll leave a comment for ya. Don't know if ya read em or just check the numbers. I read every new blog you post, it's set as my home page fer Zeus sake! I guess being on the outside lookin in I'm here for your writing and don't pay attention to the comments, let alone the number. Ya had me goin fer a minute today though and I decided to look down to find said entry with paltry 15 comments. I dinnae find it. none on the page had less than 25. Don't be a baby Baybee! Don'cha know at the enda the day yer checkin fer comments when it's still already yesterday in most western bohemia?
Well I decide to comment anyways, but I can't really comment without readin what the other kids've said. Alright someones already mentioned how many of the comments cause gag reflex, that'staken. Plenty of sukup praise, no more of that then. Maybe a Clockwork Orange quote, DOh, somebodys dunnit poorly "No time for the in out luv I've just come to read the meter". Oh well, I guess I'll just tell ya I can relate to youz feelin like a pauper, I was just evicted from the last affordable run down olde mansion in most western bohemia so'z they could gentrify it and make it into offices fer some quack doctors and sum greazy lawyers, or maybee another yoga studio there's only one in that neighborhood and it's more than 5 blocks from the nearest accupunctureist or vegetarian resteraunt. So I'm thinkin, maybe it's time I leave most western bohemia and search out a new utopia elswhere. S.K. talks about someplace east of Eden, where izit, Bondi. O.K. google..... hmmm , Fancy pants upscale suburb of Sydney?, what the... Craigslist.........$170 to share an apartment well thats reasona...WHAT! per week? Wheres the rundown mansions? How could I rock my milk white electric guitar w/out a basement? are there wherehouses or where can one peel off the notes? Thats not gonna werk. O.K. google sustainability.........What? most western bohemia? Cross reference cost of living.........Wha, most western bohemia within top 5 affordable? now I really feel tha poverty. Oh well I guess I'll have to stay fer now. Can't wait fer the crhuch to do their 'merekin tour. What? CRUHCH SKIPPING MOST WESTERN BOHEMIA?!? C'MON! I know you were treated like shit last time you were here. Pay no mind to that stoopid weakly, we Know the kids that write most of it are clueless and only care about their own little local scene. Don'tes was the wrong the wrong venue for you, there are others, without all the coke friends in the balcony my fiend. don't tell me that was the only time some loudmouthed bitch blabbed over the dramatic quiet bits. Other clubs have the mains in front of the stage instead of on it. please reconoider,reconsider. Maybe you should get a summer home in most western bohemia. TT just got a castle on the hill, there are still a few left. You could be our king for the summer. You could be TT's mentor. Think about it.
Well I dinnae mean to write so much, good thing I don't comment every day huh, well I think you may have learned your lesson. Thanks for those you've taught me.
If you don't play most western bohemia look fer me on the eyefive, acoustic guitar on my back holding the cardboard sign that reads CRUHCH or BUST!

Steve et al,
For fuck's sake, a person can't win around here. The readers who don't comment get slagged; and then rag on people like me, who do. Yeah, I comment pretty often - missed a whole week here and a few days there. Have I kissed your ass enough? Am I sycophanty enough? Oh no, there's that damn Queen again...haha. That's not why I comment. I could give a rat's ass what the others think of me or my comments. I kind of started thinking of this as sort of an ongoing conversation between you and your fiends, fans, friends, whatever.

I don't get this "I'm too intimated to write" or "I feel what I write will be trite or stupid." I'm sure most of what I've written is stupid to many but I figure hey, I'm a person, no more or less important than you Steve, (or anyone else here for that matter) and I listen to your stories and comment back, sometimes with stories of my own. You can read 'em or skip 'em - how do I know what you do. Frankly I think people who are too afraid to write anything are the sycophants - 'oh the GREAT KILBEY - what I have to comment about just isn't important, blah blah blah.'

Well I'm done for today, making friends and influencing people. And yeah, please remember, some of us are living 17 hours behind you, it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere and it's Independence Day tomorrow, so people are off on holiday as you say.
Steven, sometimes you remind me of my cat. You want us but you don't want us! Approach, avoid. And I say that with all the sycophantic love in my heart to you.

Hi Steve,

I don't comment everyday but I alaways read your bloggy - If I've got nothing to say I don't say anything. I'm no sycophant (I mean, do you really like sycophants?), but I genuinely like you and have always loved your Art - your Music - your lyrics.

What do any of us want from you - just be yourself man - say what you want - say it like it is - say it like it could be - your blogg is like your music - honest and real.

Sorry you're broke - If I owned a big record label I'd give you guys a multi-million dollar advance today.

SK, you funny old rocker. About the haircut - couldn't you get one of the girls to do the old bowl on the head trick and trim around it? Or - be bold - get the clippers out and have a good shearing. A new beginning. A new identity. Shorn Steve Kilbey-March longing for his lost locks. It *could* work.

‘the kilbey effect’
now there’s got to be a thesis in that
i’d willingly donate my head to that kind of science

i write comments that never get posted
to stupid or to sober i think & delete
my little amusements funny only to myself
or my desire to solve problems
big and/or small
both at once!
people are so attached to their problems sk
that i wonder why it’s a problem at all
since they so desire to live the way they do
i predict a continuing decline into sadness
where there should be a great opportunity
and i feel helpless about it
so gilt trip No.2
don’t give up the bloggy in november
people want to subscribe
to ye broke olde rocker
and you never know the quiet ones
may even like to comment more behind closed doors

you look in nature and you see things
say for example resonance
and there’s this feeling
that it’s not impossible
you see sk
i was a tad obsessive about your words and music
when i was a teenager and beyond
especially those lovely solo efforts
you were my contraband under religious zealots
and my company on the lonely journey
when i 23 nearly 24 and barely able to go on
living and loving something it seemed we can never understand
there came a sudden dark light
and in the background remindlessness played
and i thought wait a minute!

The world has changed when SK needs approval from the world and his fans. I posted already, but it seems in vogue to reply now. You'll get all kinds of weirdos asking you all kinds of personal questions in a public space.

We got you now. The public demands their daily dose of SK pretense and pontification.

But, the minute you make us pay ... I'm off! I'll buy your records and see your shows, but that's a bit too far.

btw, don't do the skinhead/bowlcut idea. really don't ...

You delightful old hippie you,

Don't count the comments, count the hits you get each day.

The reason why I don't comment often (and I suspect this is true for many) is that, what do you add to someone who's written something frickin' brilliant and interesting?

Don't shut off the blog. Write a pop tune for some poptart to sing and rake in the secret cash. Take yonder poptartlet aside and whisper a sweet something in her ear, give her a throway track she can strangle up the charts and sing all her own.

Granted, SK's throwaways are still magical songs and loving, giving beings that have lived with us for many a year (do you know that there are things on side two of Seance that are shimmering, brilliant and wonderful and have no comparison?)

I am quite angry at the fact that the entirety of my collection of hchurhc CDs has not translated to some form of monetary security for the old Bondi hippie. I have spent serious cash on the remastered CDs, the rare stuff, the imports and all that--why the hell isn't SK reaping some reward for that?

I hope they cut you loose from those old deals.

Again, quit counting the number of comments. Count the actual hits and visits--far more important, you know.

And one more thing--seriously, you should consider this:

Add a paypal option on this blog.

Instead of paying the record companies, the middlemen, the charlatans and the hucksters, I'd have NO PROBLEM giving the old Bondi hippie himself some cash via paypal.

SK, run don't walk to whoever can essplain this to you and we'll donate to your personal cause.

For the sake of reading this, for the sake of what you've done for us, we'll hand some cash your way, no questions asked.

Think of it this way--if I was in Bondi, and ran into you, of course I'd buy you a vegan lunch and practically demand you tell stories and GW McClennan or touring France in the 1980s. You'd roll your eyes and tell your tale, everyone goes their separate ways, etc.

Why is it any different if I drop ten US bucks into your paypal account once in a while, just for you being you?

Think about it, people--think of it as our way to stick it to the people at Arista or Warner Brothers or EMI or Carerre or any of the other companies that have ripped off old SK blind--

paypal, SK.

PAYPAL!!!

You come back from tour, you log in to your paypal, maybe there's fifty bucks there from some loyal fans and listeners. Hey, not a lot--but that's enough for something for you and your family, a meal, a gift, a thought, a wish...something.

Who else would give? Is this where the trolls roll out from under rocks and scream, arrr, don't give the Bondi hippie a plug nickel?

I am like most (I suspect) that tune in daily to your musings, we read, we support, we wonder how something that is so integral to our lives (the chruch) doesn't strike the same responsive chord in millions, we wonder at you all turning (rock) history on its head by simply continuing to grow and improve as a group and as artists, and we hope and pray you continue as long as possible. Don't fall back - what is true and of value will survive.

Hi Steve,

I post occassionally, but always read yon blogge - one of the things I do every day.

I don't understand why The Cuhrch are not more recognised in the music world. Quality songs, quality musicianship, 25 years in and still doin' it.

I would like to help you guys get the recoginition we all know you deserve. Any Esskay blogge readers out there can contact me at celticat@bigpond.net.au with your thoughts.

Let's just see what we can do, see if we can make a difference, see if we can get Esskays publishing rights back and get The Crunchies recognised as the entertainers they are.

Sorry, just sick of sitting back and doin' nuthin.

Lets have a go at this.

Regards
celticat

Just count the hits not comments.

I consider making a comment akin to applause after a song. Shows my appreciation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I quite like Sue C's suggestion of charging for comments. And when you want a bit extra cash you just crank out an entry on guns or straights or drugs. (or that cardboard box if you wanted to soak B. Bon for a few extra bucks. ;-) )
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And I'm going to do a bit of shameless promotion for SK here. Take plenty of cash (and credit and debit cards) with you to the shows. There will be a nice selection of SK art prints and cards for sale on the merch table. A couple of the prints will even be signed & numbered limited editions -- the first of those he has done.

Should be a pretty good selection of cds too. ;-) So take plenty of cash!

(and if you haven't already signed up for the SK art mailing list, do it. Sometimes we offer perks.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And Sue C -- about a few days ago. No problem. sorry I offended you.
I love your poems and spacey fantasy trips as much as anything else you utter or mutter. I am not opposed to subscribing to your blog but gawd forbid turning your life into a product. How about if you keep the blog for everyday diary stories and stuff, and set up a subscription on Karmic Hit for downloadable sample songs and poems, rather than giving them away for free. If you set something up I would definitely subscribe, ten or twenty dollars a month whatever, just bill the credit card number or something, but you could have options for people who can afford more or less. Give us the chance to read your new poems, pre-order signed cds, or to buy a photo book or poster now and then, we'll be happy. Work out what you want to give away and what you want payment for. But if you give it away you have to accept that you might not get anything back apart from silent love
When you look at the comment numbers, remember that sometimes the blogger comments isn't working, for example when you were in sweden it was malfunctioning. The weekend before last you did a post saturday morning then in the evening and again the next morning, it was great but its hard to keep up with you, and the comments were spread out over 3 blogs instead of two, and what do want anyway quality or quantity? ok, quantity then!
I don't see why you can't start a degree in ancient history next semester, the last time I was so inspired and felt about a writer the way I feel about you was when I studied Socrates and Cicero at high school so does that tell you anything? (It was a couple of decades ago) No cop outs about not being able to concentrate either thats crap. You need to match your mind with equal wits, you need to be challenged, get thee to university Steve Kilbey, the temple awaits and on the steps is a golden retriever. Inside, as you well know, is the golden fleece
The Orange Peel in Asheville? Don't do it! The accoustics in the place stink. Sure, it's a lot nicer climate-wise, but the Orange Peel is an old warehouse that's had the second floor mostly removed. It has a ceiling so high that reverb is not needed on any instrument . . . hit a note and you'll be hearing it for the next 20 minutes as it bounces off the rafters. If the place discovers sound baffles, it might become a good venue, otherwise, everything sounds loud and distorted.
Wife and I saw Paul Westerberg with his Only Friends band there last year and we were not impressed with the place.
I've never been to the HOB in N. Myrtle Beach before, but heck! It's tourist season and it's the destination for many from the midwest, so I imagine there will be a good turnout. Wife and I will be there, for sure.
