skyriver

why dont hotel room windows open in america
to stop people jumpin' out
?
why the obsession with ice?
the pool is tepid
my shower only runs on hot
you cant get it cold or it turns off
so its a boiling hot day here in san diego
but the pools warm n the showers hot
?????????????????????????
and ice
and a.c.
but no cooling water or breezes
is something wrong here?
the pool water was like sliding into
tepid chemical soup
my skin began to itch
my eyes went red
and my poor thin fine hair split its ends
itsa lovely vista from my hotel
an absolute riot of trees
palms, oaks, elms
(as if i wood know what an elm tree looks like)
(but its nice to go on listing the lovely names
of the lovely trees)
birch, sycamores, honeysuckle w/ hummingbirds
hazy grey blue sky
i think of the spanish , zorro
it IS very like spain here
it IS a beautiful part of the world
but its weird too
laidback n expensive n slightly uptight
a sub-culture of (presumably) mexican maids n waiters
they appear n do things but it SEEMS like yr not supposed to talk to em
i said thanks to a guy taking away my plates
and he looked at me like
what are ya talking to me for
some things i guess im naive about
some lovely fans from mexico last night with vinyl
san diego belly up was our first good show here
but it was pretty good
good size crowd
great venue n equipment
good time guaranteed
we transcended, didnt we?
i thought so
now sitting in motel room
waiting for another intavu to come thru
steve?
im larry wankler from the bingle herald, nth dakota
i normally do the sport but the rock guys wife hadda baby
so here goes
um...tell me somethin' about yerselves...ah,
why did yall call yerselves the church...and...ah..
tell me bout yer new record...i aint heard it yet tho...
it only arrived this morning, and i couldnt get the cd player to work
but i heard that other..
ok
this blogge is being interrupted by my conscience
who says
tell them nevets about the 2 very eloquent n knowledgable dudes
you just talked to
who knew all about yer music...
even this blogge
tell em how ya enjoyed the interviews
and they were nothin like what ya said
ok ok
its true
america aint all badde fiendss
the best stuff is THE best
AND
the worst stuff is THE worst
tonite anaheim
and itsa big place n we aint sold many tickets
boo hoo
why dont people wanna see washed up olde one hit wunderkinds
aussie hippy jingly jangly scruffy space rockers
i'll never know
i love you fiendss

Why you haven't sold out?/why you aren't huger than a very big thing?/why not bigger than the fabs?....I don't know.
Everyone I know that's heard of you likes you. All the people that hear me playing your CD's say how good yon Church are. Yet they still go out and buy Coldplay/Radiohead/Razorlight et al instead. All the previously mentioned are good bands (well ish....)one and all, but not as good as you chaps. Sorry Joycie but "fuck knows" Steve.
The only thing I can think of is you're working so hard at being a nicer person that the whole world working out you're a bloody genius wouldn't be good for you. I'm not being sarcastic - I honestly can't think of any other reason. Sure you're music can be challenging at times but Radiohead've taken folks to some stranger places & still sold massively.
All I know is your music has changed lives - even saved some. Mine even once.
Love you more SK

My lovely wife and I were watching on VH-1 last evening a video of Floyd fom the last big tour that Gilmore and Co. did. My wife looked at me and said, "Except for the light show, the Church still sound better."

So cheers, just add some more lazers! LOL

I echo Florian Trout's suggestion: more lasers. We Americans prefer our concerts to be replete with explosives and girls dancing in cages, too.

These are merely suggestions. Let your conscience be your guide.

Or let your budget be your guide.

That being said, spare no expense in Indianapolis.

Thats crazy sk. Its almost like theyre a lost generation of new people. Listening to just whats on the radio in their own little atmospheres. Never bother to listen out of the invisible shell of modern radio and break through to the better stuff.
That is your band, the better stuff im talking about.
The stuff that no matter how many times you listen to it, it never gets old. The kind of music that helps you gain perspective when youve lost it. The kind of music that makes you want to make a little of your own. You know...

Even if you dont sell that many tickets, play your heart out. The people that are there will listen, cause any body will understand that your music is beautiful, if theyre listening for it and if they really appreciate music for what it is. Id buy therest of those tickets if i could, and it would be worth every penny too.

i know it's easier said than done, but don't get discouraged about the small crowds at the shows. the people who DO come do so to listen to the best band that ever was, and they KNOW you're the best band that ever was (or IS)......the younger generation today, for the most part, doesn't know good music when they hear it!! just keep doing what you do best. you may be "washed up olde one hit wunderkinds aussie hippy jingly jangly scruffy space rockers", but i challenge the likes of kanye west or britney spears to still be around 25 years later, with the devout fandom that you have.

Shame on Anaheim, maybe that explains I got front row on day two of the presale. The freakin' local paper (which is usually spot-on) couldn't even give you an honorable mention. Shame! Shame! Shame! Those in the know will be there, so glad you are soldiering on! We appreciate ya here.

Steve, ... following you all the way, the ups and downs, the gems, the clowns. Why The Church are not hugely famous is one of those utter mysteries of life! All it means is that the majority of the planet are in the dark. Hell, most out there didnt even know who Syd Barrett was.

Its beyond my comprehension esp when everyone seems to love your music. Its like there's an invisible forcefield stopping people from following up on the desire, I dont know. Maybe when you named your band you upset some deity :) But dont feel too bad, the fans going to your gigs (and I heard one of the AZ shows sold out) are worth a million dudes yelling out for Freebird or 'yo man!' whatever. And for goddsakes, dont change a thing ! An INXS song just came into my head. the best one actually. Sorry sidetracked, but hang in there, there are musiclovers out there who need you!

And STOP SAYING 'washed up'!

Hey SK,

Stop being so hard on yeself for being the perfectionist that ye are.

Even if some shows aren't sold out it's better than it being sold out with people coming who aren't fans and who want to spoil it for the genuine people who luv the band (i.e. talking loudly through it.).

Would love to be at a concert over there, you're lucky escaping this cold rainy miserable winter over here. Good idea by your blog fiend to put on a concert for us, can you imagine that.

Good luck for tonite and the rest of the tour, please release a video of a concert soon, especially the Basement one, which is a place I hope you will play at again when you recover from this tour.

I'm glad to hear this show was better. I'm looking forward to Atlanta when I can shove my fat bald self into the Variety. I hope they have a wide doorway.

So you didn't sell out in Anaheim. I think it's a good thing that you aren't pop stars. Look at some of these 'older' pop stars touring, dusting off the 30 and 40-year-old hits, unable to create anything new that is worthwhile. Meanwhile, you guys keep cranking out masterpieces every year or two. You may be unnoticed in the mainstream, but I think there is a large group of people who do notice and appreciate your music.

See you in Atlanta brother. We love you.

What the hell is wrong with you???

These lads don't travel to the States every frickin' year!!!

What does it take to get you off your dead asses to go see some geniuses play? I mean, you have your old Kilbey, your Koppes, your Willson-Piper--if that's not enough, why, that fellow Powles is an excellent drummer--that ought to be enough to separate you from a little discretionary spending money and get you into a venue to hear some brilliant music played live, right?

I mean, if it were just the old Kilbey and a detuned spanish guitar slung high with warbling sound, that would be worth it. He's a stone genius, he's there to play those songs, where's your sense of decency, West Coast?

Well, East Coast will take up the challenge and ye shall be appreciated here.

culturally, you see, we must always jump and we will jump further, longer and harder than you (insert whomever you are here). why some would ask? because we, as americans, know nothing better to do - hardly anything, at least. nothing, i would admit to doing - legally - that is and still have my hopes of.... wait... just a moment.... just a moment.... dave, i've picked up a fault in the AE69 unit... ...sorry, gentlemen, i did loose track of that train of thought.

I have it on good authority (our black cat, Morph) that my wife will be winning the Powerball lottery tonight. We'll rent whatever's left of Babylon after the Yankee capitalist pigs (oops.. I'm American) have left and we'll front a few hundred plane tickets for a show there.

It'll be like the anti-Dark Side of the Moon video.

Well. Maybe not Babylon. There may be too many hanging gardeners around to make it a pleasant venue. Besides, the depleted uranium dust might damage your vocal chords or cause the tape on MWP's guitar to disintegrate.

I have it! Barrow Alaska for the winter solstice! An all night show, of course.

Nope. Wouldna work. The polar bears, seals, and whales might be disturbed by the band's sonicly etheral grooves.

This is the ticket... The White House Lawn. They wouldn't mind renting it out. After all, they've sold the people out to virtually every other special interest group, why not to one that's out to have a spiritual experience? That's exactly what seeing you guys play is.

Looking forward to seeing you fellows in N. Myrtle Beach. (no winning lottery ticket required)

Had to laugh at the hot shower bit. A few years ago I stayed in a crappy hotel room where the cold water didn't work in the shower. Hottest damned showers I've ever taken. And of course it was extra hot and humid that weekend and I was working long days outside in dirt, so I was looking, feeling, and smelling my very best by the time I got back to the hotel (which was 25 miles away, in an iffy neighborhood, and, like all the other hotels in the area that weekend, completely sold out so I couldn't even move to another room), so I really needed to shower!

Luckily they did have ice. Yeah, I must admit it -- I LOVE ice. I want ice cold water, iced tea, hell I even like iced coffee. Pretty much everything I drink I want to be super, super cold -- doesn't absolutely have to have ice in it, but I want it really cold. Must come from growing up with a well (complete with tin cup and everything). Well water, no matter how hot is was outside, was always super cold. And it tasted great too. nuttin' quite like great well water.

And I'm looking very forward to seeing you "aussie hippy jingly jangly scruffy space rockers!" :-)

Ha - ice.
Now there's a 'cultural'? difference I can't get over. First time I went to Europe - I'd been warned they didn't put ice in the drinks. Got there and a few of the upscale hotels we stayed at actually gave me a cube or two in a drink. Apparently though, my mum and I are like Tony P's wife. We need glaciers in our drinks. TONS of ice. Went to a Tesco in London and BOUGHT bags of ice. In Rome the hotel did have ice machines. I think we broke them we used so much of their ice. Then we called room service and asked for ice and a guy came up with about 4 cubes in a square bowl looking like we'd asked for a small child to sacrifice to be delivered to our room.
In Florence - nada! I'm standing in the market fuming. "It's water! Freeze it and sell it!"

Oh great sadness and joy yesterday. Sadness...missed the show in Anaheim...joy - because one of my best friends had a baby and I'd been commissioned to be there. A new little life. Ah well, I can't be greedy - I saw two shows and spent time with lovely people. :)

Steve - I truly hope I don't offend while saying this, but as much as we all love to tell you not to worry about ticket sales as the beauty of your music has still touched so many people...let's face it, you guys can't live on love alone, haha. People tell me teaching is a noble profession but noble doesn't pay a lot. Sadly it takes $$$$ to tour and to live and that IS an issue where ticket and merch sales come in.
Ha. Money. Seems a little less important when you're young...'oh I'm not selling out' 'i don't need much' but then ya get family, bills, etc. Soon it takes money to make money. Grrrrr. Wish the music was all that mattered, huh.
Wish people halfway across the globe would stop killing each other too.

For what's it worth, I bought tickets to all the shows...so there's my money honey, and you can't buy a glass of warm, tepid Coke with this...but you have changed lives and contributed greatly to the love and positive energy of this planet by your very existence. My life has been infinitely better with you on this planet. You can't put a price on that.: ; )
love,

Then there's us landlocked folk who'd love to attend but are nowhere near a scheduled show. Today is my 38th birthday and I would have preferred to spend it at a Church gig...but alas, I'll have to settle for the Starlight Mints at the Jackpot, with a shot of Jager...its OK, its herbal!

Yabbos in the mouse-land of Anaheim.

"We welcome you." August 6, August 6.

We are just voyeurs here, peeking in thru sk's grey-blue windows and pointing out objects of interest.

Steve,

You probably won't read this, and you definatly won't remember, but I knew you years ago. Not that anyone really 'knows' anyone...wanted to say very sorry to hear about Grant. Jack F. is always an amazing journey.
I got tickets to see you in NYC on 8/10 was there in '99 too.
I'm there whenever I can be. I work underwater so it's tough sometimes. One of your songs is almost always going through my mind when I'm down there. I haven't spoken to you in years and years, but I still listen. Thanks for the wonderful colors. Look fwd to NYC.

"Canvasboard or stretched? I thought that since the only culture I usually get is from yoghurt-I shall purchase a painting--"

invisiwoman, I can answer that question for you.

Neither. They are on fine acid-free watercolour paper. (they are pastel/gouache). The prints are also on top notch acid-free watercolour paper and are printed with archival inks, so should last long enough that your heirs will fight over them. ;-)

Anyone else notice when SK asks us to behave we get extra snippy at each other?

The "Minister for Secret Police" (that's me) is gonna have to kick some ass if people don't chill out.

...of course if you buy some of SK's prints or a painting the ass-kicking could be waived.... ;-)

i was offered a free ticket to see your san francisco gig if i did a review of the show.

i hate doing reviews and want to completely enjoy your show, so that meant buying tickets for my wife and i....now it's an official date night...

i'm glad i interviewed you before you left australia...it sounds like i got to you before the mayhem.

that will be published in the san francisco chronicle on august 17th and the audio portion of the interview will be broadcast on my radio show on august 19th. i'll send your publicist all the necessary skinny.

i wish you continued success on your tour and see you on the last night of it.

and i'm now addicted to your blog.
