dwarfed by spires and tangled towers

yeah yeah
here you are
what took ya so long?
cold morning
at the lapptopp
(obviously)
yessaday the pool was 15.1 degrees
oh to immerse yerself in cold clear salty water
what a feeling of elation after my 20 lapps
no wonder those dolphins are playing around all the time
from the icebergs you can see the whales n dolphins
and it makes me so sad that a couple of despicable crooked countries
are still fuckin' with the rules
and trying to kill more creatures like this
no one wants it!!
but how do we stop it...
OBVIOUSLY THEYRE NOT TAKING THE WHALES FOR RESEARCH
AND EVEN IF THEY WERE< FUCK EM
COS NEITHER WE NOR THE WHALES NEED ANY RESEARCH
we just gotta sit back and watch these idiots n criminals
harpooning whales, clubbing dolphins n seals etc
this is how things are and have always gone wrong
gone wrong
bad things being done by a greedy stupid powerful few
that are perpertrated on the nice n gentle people n creatures
most of us just wanna live our lives...
always someone bendy bendy with the rules
talks ya into why loadsa badde stuff has to happen
some carnivorous gooseball told me
that
the cows should be thankful that humans breed n slaughter em
"or there wouldnt be so many everywhere"

right on!
thats the kind of self satisfied idiocy that gets things killed
still no one can tell me why all those young men had to die
in europe i1914 1918
but at the time
at the time
fiendsss
i bet they had all kindsa good reasons
youd bee considered a fool or traitor to have argued back
its the same with this whaling bizness
how can ya blast harpoons into something like a whale
and drag it back home
cut its guts open
use bits n pieces
its so obscene
its so inhuman
is that all the fuck that we're good for
inflicting that kind of agony on creatures like these
they aint fish
theyre probably smarter than everyone reading these words
and sneaky little nasties figger out ways to keep it goin'
greenpeace and the other dudes actually physically opposing it
well
they are the real life heroes
the actual putting their selves on the line guys
cos somebody has to...

in other matters
youll be happy to know ive reached a terrible torpor
a state of inertia fiendss
a la all things work related
not getting anything done
day go by
days go by
suddenly oh...
that was wednesday
and shes gone
and i never asked her why
or anything
you see im badde with schedules n deadlines
they make me lose track of time n probability
my daughter minna says
the thing i hate about school is that theres always this
big looming important assignment causing this constant
feeling of agitation n anxiety in the background...
and as soon as youve done it
theres a new one to do
why does school have to be like that
shes right!
we start piling the anxiety on early
on the kidss
my kids school is real nice
everyone is real nice
the kids are real nice
but ultimately its the system
teaching ya how to cope with
and how to be a cog
in the great machine
let em compete n compare
let em learn whatever we think we know as facts
slowly but surely you got em
they never gonna question the whole shebang
what can ya do?
i dunno
i got no alternatives
the balls rolling now
gonna take someone younger n stronger n smarter n richer
than me
to figure out the way out
i just sing a few songs
write a few bloggs
waste my time in the sun
and the sea
when im gone
be like i almost never was here
and thats that

Pressure... to be part of the effing machine. I remember school.. liked my geography teacher but the pressure was shite.. One day I worked out a plan... go to all the lessons.. that's quite easy.. just turn up.. take notes.. listen..show some interest.. but then,( here's the clever bit)... don't worry too much about homework.. assignments etc.. then in the last week before the exams and for the whole of the exam period, stay awake constantly , do barrow-loads of amphetamines, read al the notes and cram all the revision into one big hit, then pass the exams. I did my "O" levels like this, weeks worth of saturday job money spent on speed and then two weeks of fake flu in bed to recover.. I got 8 good O-levls outta that. Maybe it's not the best plan for your kids people.. but it worked for me.

I'd be too fucking scared to take speed now.I guess rioja wouldn't work eh?

Pressure's still on.. was in the office till gone 8 tonight.. grafting for he man. Who is this man? Either way he's a twat. Turns out my new boss says he "used to love Slayer, Megadeth and bands like that" but now "only listens to rap and hip hop" I queried him.. Was it the righteous stuff.. Franti, Public Enemy, Mos Def, Common? No,just P (puff, sean, puffy?) Diddy and Eminem and all those homophobic mysoginistic wankers.

OK.. rant over. I feel better now.

I'm off to a wedding at the weekend with old friends. It's in deepest darkest (old) South Wales. There's gonna be a male voice choir and two bands.. The groom is a blacksmith..

Ah.. If i were a carpenter..

Peace,

Richard.

Steve,
I hate wars but sometimes I do feel that throughout history, and sadly into the present and no doubt future, wars will be fought due to the lowest part of human nature taking over...so I don't know that a world without war is totally possible. I'd like to believe more like you do...I guess I'm too cynical. Wars make me sad, and make my blood boil, but if man wants to kill man, I can at least say well, 'they consciously chose to do cruel things to each other.'

Clubbing baby seals? Killing whales? Now that makes me f-ing insane with fury and grief. Oh yeah, THAT's an even playing field. THAT's necessary. One day the US Humane Society sent me an email showing me the clubbing of baby seals and I cried hysterically, naive, I guess, that anyone could do anything so utterly cruel and unnecessary. You're right - the real heroes are Greenpeace, etc.

Oh my. I say this as I'm studying for a nasty exam; your daughter is quite right about school pressure - and I am student and I have been teacher and will be teacher again. I think what can I do within such a screwed up system so that the kids I teach are not always under such pressure but still learn and dream and use their minds in creative and imaginative ways? The 'man' just gives us hoops to jump through. Maybe I can make my hoops a lot more interesting, at the very least.

As usual, great blogge. Hey! You didn't answe a question I had too, but didn't ask: Why do you get up so early and HOW do you do it? Are you naturally diurnal?

there is talent out there that is being repressed, maybe not ever realized, because of the pressure to not only conform, but also to get everything done on a certain schedule. you're right~~anxiety is placed on our children too early, and a lot of times their talents fall to the wayside.

what a shame.

humans are wasteful. they are the only species on the planet that kill other species for purposes other than eating. animals kill each other to eat. humans kill animals for various reasons, such as hanging its head on the wall as a trophy, wearing its fur, and using it for such absurd things as **gasp** aphrodisiacs.

The human race isn't half as clever as it thinks it is - we do some terrible things to ourselves and other species on this little planet of ours - I just cannot relate to people who want to cause pain and suffering to another sentient being.

School and the whole education system is just designed to make us compliant tame slaves, to condition us to a 9-5 existence.

I can't say I've got any answers either, as you say "the balls rolling now" and it's going far too fast to stop.

I wish I was as disciplined as you and was able to get up at 6:00 a.m or whatever time you begin your day but, I kind of like the peace and quiet of the the early hours it's the best time of the day for me.

Ciao, and have a beautiful day.

Here is Matthew Ward's (spirit) view on human treatment of animals that may be of interest...

S: Yes, thank you. Long ago you said that a lot of the negativity on Earth was created by the treatment of animals. How much negativity is created because of eating meat and seafood?

MATTHEW: It is the inhumane way that animal lives are treated and ended that causes the negativity, and this applies across the board, not only to “food animals.” While the land animals and sea life knowingly embodied in forms that would be eaten, their soul agreements have been terribly violated by the conditions in which they are grown as livestock and the torturous methods used to end their physical lives.

S: Did even whales agree to being eaten?

MATTHEW: They did as individuals, but not as a species as did beef cattle and chickens, for instance. The inhumanity of many on Earth toward animals has severely violated the soul agreements of wild and domesticated animals alike. Thankfully, the efforts of many people who heeded the message of their souls, “Save the animals,” are being increasingly effective, but you have a long ways to go.

S: I know. Do people who are vegetarians and vegans have more light than people who aren’t?

MATTHEW: Light is not automatically more abundant in those people—the amount of light in any soul comes from the collective thoughts, feelings, motives and deeds lifelong. Most who refrain from eating animal flesh do so because they respect the animals’ essence, which indeed creates more light in their souls. But the souls of those whose diets do include animal flesh may have as much light as those whose diets don’t, and this goes back to the way the entire life is lived.

If you wish to ask, Do we honor those who refrain from eating animals?—YES, indeed we do. Those who respect the essence of “food” animals usually also serve on behalf of humane treatment for all animals. As Earth continues ascending into higher vibrations, the sacredness and interconnectedness of ALL life will be understood, and greater sensitivity to animals will result in most humans becoming vegetarians.

The pressure of school! When my daughter was in prep she totally freaked out. She thought she had to know everything already. We explained to her that she was going to school to learn, that it was alright to make mistakes, that making mistakes is part of learning. Things started to go bad when they started writing. You see they had been learning one letter of the alphabet a week. On Monday mornings they had to write what they did on the weekend. Her anxiety was over the fact that they hadn’t yet done the 26 letters of the alphabet, yet had to write sentences. She’d be in the car in a state of panic, asking “How do I spell Shrek?” Most children probably wouldn’t worry about not knowing all the letters. The problem is, not all children fit into the same mould! We ended up at the doctors’ who said she had the equivalent to irritable bowl. She was taking a heat pack to school for her sore tummy. She also saw the school physiologist who said she was very bright and highly creative and got her to draw what she did on the weekend for a while in order to ease the anxiety. Two years down the track she is much better; however, she is still such an anxious little thing. Her present teacher is great; she gets them to do relaxation during the day and massage. Each day a child gets to lead the relaxation and be teacher for the day. A great way to calm them down and to help with their confidence!

Here's more evidence the scientific research behind Japan's whaling operations is horrendously bogus. Japanese consumer demand for whale meat has been plummeting to the point there is now an oversupply, so much so that Japanese schoolchildren are being urged to eat whale meat for lunch. Even the elderly are being encouraged. But the marketing campaigns have failed - dismally.

Consequently, whale-meat prices have dropped. Richer Japanese are buying other meat products, such as imported beef. The JWA hopes poorer Japanese will step in to buy the cheaper whale meat. And still there's abundant whale meat left over. That is processed, piled into cans and sold as cat and dog food.

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes

SK, I adore you, but isn't it just possible these hints of reincarnation you perceive are really just manifestations of your contorted psyche striving for ego survival? How do you *know*? Not singling you out, we all do it, whether thru the ludicrous idea of heaven (or hell), reincarnation, or whatever. The absurd happened and now we have to deal with it. But the range of experience we can have is enormous! Yay!

I'd rather hang out with whales, dolphins and seals any day, than any of these red-state fucks. One whale is worth a hundred Bush/Cheney/Rumsfelds, karmically speaking (I don't believe in karma), and this is not an apples/oranges comparison, cause if whales aren't intelligent, as one of your astute anonymous commentators posited, then we're certainly working off the same ignorant basis, and they are in bad company with the idiot Bush and his butt lackies Cheney/Rumsfeld. What a bunch of craven torturing cowards. Why do European governments even allow that asshole entry? I don't see whales torturing each other--perhaps because they're stupid, right? Perhaps intelligence breeds cruelty, but then that still doesn't explain Bush.

Not sure what the point of this rant is. Sorry. You know, SK, that song "Nervous" rocks. More like that please. In fact all of that period stuff is good. "Crashride" is also awesome.

Texas needs your compassion.

There are millions of people here who despise Bush Caesar. They are quick to point out that he and his Praetorian clan is from Connecticut, not Texas. These minions of darkness are parasites, sucking in the mythos of Texas ('freedom!', 'liberty!') for the consumption of the masses. Fakes. Pretenders.

Texas has its problems. Entrenched racism, grinding poverty, state-sponsored death, tax-aversion, poor education, ignorance, etc., etc.,

But not everybody owns a gun and a hummer. I see people with flowers and bicycles. They are not having a very good time, but they are fighting for the soul of Texas. They need your help. They need your compassion.

It's funny that you should use the lyrics to 'Sisters' as the headings for your most recent bloggs, that is one of my all time favorite songs, I related (and still do) to it so much.
Concerning the education thing, I hated school so much I dropped out 3 times, the last time they said I couldn't go back. I don't always think it's the best way to go, but it was too restrictive, boring and regimental for me. College was great! (yes, I graduated from college!) I loved the flexible atmosphere, less pressure and the open forum of open discussions and lectures. I think we need to find ways to educate kids differently, more interactive and hands on stuff. I'm actually pursuing teaching this fall, maybe I can help make a difference!
I can't believe your able to swim so many laps, I did 8 laps at the pool the other day and really struggled there at the end. What is your favorite swimming style? Mine is the breath stroke. (and I better not see any smart ass comments about the whole 'stroke' thing!!!

Anyways, I too am disturbed by the cruelty that I see inflicted on both humans and animals. It is so unnecessary, but I also feel really helpless. I will do what I can to make a difference in my life and those that share their lives with me. I guess that's all that any of us can do!

Peace

Well I been thinkin that too and undoubtably with greater truth than yourself. I'm not sure of what conclusions to draw. And even if you were super greatly missed by a mass, so what.

Call me elitist or whatever but I've often found it true as anything to judge a person by their choice in music, ie their taste as a window to their soul. Sadly, at the moment with me here in regional Vic (Aust) I know no one who likes/ listens to the Church. "Those distant cities, are safe and warm" ......

It's great and a saver, though, to tune into your blog world of friends, so many thanks.

gav, I find myself doing that too, though more with books than with music. I guess cause I feel more confident in my knowledge of books (i mostly just listen to The Choich and solo/side projects, plus a few other things). You can tell a great deal from a glance at someone's bookcase - its a glimpse into their head, their influences... When I'm traveling and if I happen through a place with lots of expats or foreigners one of the first places I go is a used bookstore (if one exists). A quick scan of the shelves and I decide if I should stay a few days or move on without talking to anyone. A shelf of bestselling trash usually indicates the level of conversation you're likely to find...

Re: "whale research" and clubbing seals. These groups try to spin it as something cultural (this is true of Japan, where I lived, and canada, where i'm from), a part of a cherished tradition that gives them definition and meaning. Their "cultural birthright." Acceptance of these arguments comes of the whole cultural relativism thing (hey, i was an anthropology grad, sorry...). The idea that every culture has its own unique expressions that are all equally valid and that can't be judged by someone not of that culture. I'm sorry, but that's a load of overblown nonsense. Yes, you can judge. Yes, some practices are just wrong - especially those that cause harm and pain.

We don't even teach our children for the sake of producing intelligent, reasonable beings anymore. We teach them how to perform well on standardized testing so that we look good on the big tote board that says "this state's kids are better than that state's kids" so that The Man will give us more money. We fill heads with answers, but not the logic with which to explain them.
