thet packed us up in boxes, wooden boxes, and sent us home

good mourning little fiendss

yessaday we said our goodbyes to grant
one of the worlds finest singers and writers
one of the most sensitive and lovely of all rocks characters
taken from us too soon
too soon
every leaf that falls from the tree whispers
too soon
the service was in a big old cathedral in brissy
packed to the rafters with grants family
his friends
and the many many fans
who came to pay their last respects
to a genuine one-off genius
the service was ok
a few too many messages from our sponsor, maybe
but it was ok
grants brave sister sally spoke about him
robert f miraculously maintained his composure
and gave us a very comforting speech
about hearing grants voice all week
then grants partner emma
a beautiful lady..
she gave us a few insights
some poems
i know she and grant loved each other very much
all 3 of these people
showing..
what was that phrase, grant
grace under pressure
i had my brutha rusty and good fiend wil-o with me
but i met and chatted to grants brother lachlan
glenn bennie, we finally meet!
tim whitten , a lovely lovely man
tyrone n. from george
who done some work with grant lately
this cat was beside himself with grief
and we were reminiscing and crying and laughing together
and we both realised that we loved grant so much
that that alone made us friends for life
(and ty, i forgive ya for singing the words of un mo
to almost with you ..it was a stressful day
and grant woulda thought that was hilarious)
i had one of grants fave drinks a long island tea
which seemed to have 5 different white spirits in it
and certainly knocked me around
i met the moody and enigmatic ed kuepper
(and i hugged him!!)
what a gentlemen
i met peter milton walsh of the apartments
peter walsh of livid fame(no longer the bleary eyed idiot)
the fiery lindy morrison
the serene and lovely amanda brown
of course the likable and handsome ian haug
from p finger
who loved grantley as much as me
(they did the far out corporation together)
and he was stunned to lose a mate like grant
everyone i met there
i say
did you know grant
oh yes theyd say
getting that smile on their face
i knew him well
it seems to know him
WAS
to love him
this man wasnt just admired and respected
HE WAS LOVED
and all of us
will miss him every day of our lives

grant if youre reading my blogg today
see if ya can get some good players together
for when i next see ya
i love you grant

on the way home russell gives me a book by kurt vonnegut
called a man without a country
and blow me down
if he aint saying the same things as me
about war, the bushes, guns, america
never forget fiendss
my wife and 2 of my daughters are american
a lot of my best friends and greatest heros too
me and kurt and michael moore
and the likes are not anti american
we love the ideal of america
we love what america could have been
but its all gone wrong fiendss
im sorry, it has
it wasnt sposed to be like this
america was sposed to be the country we all looked up to
the fair and righteous one
but as kurt says
now everyones afraid of it
everyone hates it
why did that have to happen

i saw a picture of george w and his brother jeb
and theyre saying ..next pres jeb?
and gw saying
hes a big strong guy...makes the decisions
fiendss have ya seen this fucking imbecile ?
surely
surely
in that huge country
they have 10 million men more suited
to this most crucial position
than this obviously stupid tub of lard
bathing in nepotism, cronyism
and fuck democracy we were born to rule
fiendss the bushes are going for a dynasty here
thats what ya fought yer war against us limeys for
in the first place
to get rid of one brutal moron handing
down the crown to his even more brutal stupid kids
now look what ya got
so after reading kurts little book
i am vindicated(he even goes into rants like me
complete with "fuckin's and fuck offs when
he really gets mad)
this is a brilliant man
served his country ww2
and he says like me
no wars
no guns
love is the answer
etc etc etc
just the same stuff us
bohemians artists and intellectuals have been saying
for the last umpteen thousand years
but the aggressive turkeys always hi jack the agenda
and you get vietnam and iraq
which none of us ever wanted
you think vietnam woulda taught em all a lesson
but fuck no
these warlike types are thick n stupid
(and cowardly, they never do the fighting, themselves)
give fucking gw a gunny
and tell him to patrol the nasty suburbs of bag-dad
see how long he lasts
but everything i say you know already
if ya still hanging round saying
no iraqs a glorious victory
and thank god for the bomb
and nuke a gay whale for jesus
and all that...
i feel sorry for ya

thats it
read kurts book
itll only take ya an hour
i love ya

Good to see you back, man. Thanks for the notes about the funeral. Been listening to JF a lot these past few days, and picked up a bunch of Go-Bees stuff yessaday, discovering some of this man's wonderful work. i wish i hadn't waited so long.

will pick up the vonnegut book this weekend, sounds like it's right up my alley. i've read some of his stuff in the past, always liked him.

hope you're feeling a bit better after hanging out with friends, sharing stories, laughter and tears...

take care, sk.

Snow Job's on the headphones right now. It just feels right.

Don't give up on America yet. There are plenty of us out there trying to get our message out (Peace, Love and Understanding. My theory, start with understanding and P&L will follow). It's just difficult 'cause the easily persuaded don't read and the baddies own our TV stations. All that's left is the internerd...and shouting from street corners.

Current approval is at 29%, and that poll was taken before it was revealed that the Gov't was listening to all of our calls and not just AQ's.

Slowly but surely, we're waking up.

In the last 6 years, we probably set ourselves back 20, so that part sucks.

Sk,
Hope yu feel better
its such a wonder to love something all the way beyond the comfortable beyond the rational.
hope it mends for you. You guys made magic happen warm frosty hazey style.
I wanna revisit this lil story for you and all the good people.
I had a small adventure and while reading the mass of egaggolb that was piled on today
I found it hard to blow gunsmoke up anything, imagine that, pass the jazz
and here a small dose of my reality.

So I got payed the ultimate compliment today

I (Jaime R.) was out at the doggie park with T-rex my (Tito-rexpin(mini-shnauzersaurus) and Jasmine(yorkie-poosif)wookie princess ballerina extraordanairio..
they have quite a fan club..and they just love it, running around, crotch sniffing, licking, mounting and stuff ala SanFran 69.. woohoo!
Although its been getting tuff on Tito, he is still acting very German stern, heavy hormones and such..
and while the chicks dig it.. he is completely unaware since he honestly just wants to play with the boys in that Brokeback sort of fare.. Hylarious..

But yeah, Today "I" got all kinds of lovin and sweet attention from all pooches big and small,
a group of twin Malteses came up to me waggin and attracted all kinds of others to come by,
so while all these little girls are gigglin and waggin their bums, I'm just enjoying all the cuteness as I love the buggers.. Aye! they're good peeples too ya know!

So then, this sumbyatch little Puggle (pug/beagle) turd comes round and hes taking loads a sniffs at all the gals
and then without even looking at me
he lifts his lil leg
and pissssssses all over my sandals and feets!!
and I mean starting from me toes to me shins, and I mean an all over marination..
I look down just cuz I still cant believe and sho nuff I just cant stop laughin ...
I mean, can I get a witness!!
this lil mofo took me back to grammar skool...
So then all the owners are laughing with me.. i thinks.. and offering to help clean my feet..
I refrain and play it off cuz Im a trooper and while I could indulge in the sensuousness of a watery rinse from the cute mommies, I hang tight but I cant help but remember that lil sumbyatch Marlon the puggle
was the same one who on the HOTTEST of days, whizzed on this gals water bottle seconds after she set it down...
Well I tell yu after that the dogs couldnt understand why they just loved my foot sooo much..
they would come to adore and worship and I mean really snort and love the heck out of it.
they'd look up as if to ask "do yu do birthdays or weddings" kinda look..
My dogs are now so proud of me in that bragging sort of way..
People, I highly recommend this experience if yu could possibly entice a puggle, try it..
thanks Loki..
and what else can I say besides.. Imagine >>>>>>>>>>>

>>Imagine there's a pack of wild pooches and theyre surrounding yu snarling and yu can bloody see it in their eyes redd rumm..i think..
and then one of them jumps out in front of you and he farts and leaks all over yu and your whole family's faces and they all are lookin at yu in horror
and all in your face and sheeesh man..
What would yu do?
WHAT DOO YU DOO!!!!

blessings yall
jesus was pro-luv
tune in to U.B.Jesus

P.S please dont hate and dont answer this if yu dont like pooches

I had a 'moment' at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC the other day. Sunny day. Lovely. Kiddies all over. People having a laugh, eating icecreams and that.

It was a fork in the road for me. My mood didn't know which way to turn. What to make of this scene before me?

Cynic in me said: Fools! Fiddle while Baghdad burns! Suck down yer lard lattes! Rack up yer debt! Don't give a flying hoot! Doomed, yer all doomed! Black helicopters across the horizon, jets in formation overhead. Doomed warmongerers, violent and fearful. Fools!

Uncynic in me said: Beautiful! The innocence, the confidence! So many bright ideas! Such a wide, diverse land! Open! Resourceful! These people will overcome this tyranny! They are not beat yet! They will forge an answer from their own burning brow if need be! The light has not yet dimmed to night! The children will show them the way! Beautiful!

It could've gone either way. Which little voice is right?

I chose the path of light. And I reckon this country will too, before it's all too late.

As another George once said: All things must pass.

Damn straight! It used to be that leaders such as Alexander the Great led the charge. But does that happen anymore? Hell no. I'm convinced that if any president wants to take his country to war that he should lead them all into battle and be willing to risk his own pretty neck. If he dies, the vice prezzy takes on the president's responsibilities. Everyone would of course know this when electing their president/vice-president and vote accordingly. But the important thing here is that those that decide to battle would be putting their own lives on the line. We'd see just how often a president would choose to go to war then...

SK,

So glad that the funeral is over. Now the difficult task of adjusting to the empty spaces that Grant left in the outside and inside worlds begins. What a beloved man!

Wondering how Elektra and Miranda are doing. Haven't seen news on them lately. Of course, I don't read every day (though I wish I had the time).

Take care,
Paige

Thanks Steve - very generous of you to share your thoughts and memories this week. While I've always thought you and Grant were an unlikley combination (your clever but obtuse lyrics and his searingly honest sentiment) - it worked - and your connection is palpable. Such a sense of loss - one day it would be great to see a tribute concert/album by all those musicians who admired and loved him - maybe the supergroup he alluded to! I'm sure its not just Robert who has Grant's voice in his head so lets hope he continues to inspire sincerity in all of us.

Midnight, cold and rainy in Chicago. Driving and listening to devils eye on that striped sunlight sound. tears fall. the boundary rider at the 5 mile fence is gone at the peak of his powers, I feel like I’ve lost an older brother. every day I think of him more, the feeling of loss grows deeper. that perfect sound, voice, acoustic guitar clean and clear, electric notes gorgeous. Greedy angels stole him from sleep, wanting to hear sunlit lullaby’s in heaven. the last three GB's albums were masterpieces. Old mexico, going blind, boundary rider, finding you, the clock, aviatrix, empire, providence, thought that I was,cousin/angel, civil war lament. Thank you for the three minute novels, the brief transcendence in everyday life, like beautiful intimate prayers. And all you do is carry on….

Grant's funeral sounds like it was a lovely and fitting tribute from those who knew and loved him.

About Jeb Bush...I literally felt my blood run cold as I read the article stating that George Sr. and GW want Jeb to run for President. I can't take much more of that family being in charge! Got a place where I can temporarily crash if I up and move to Australia?

i struggled with the stroller up the steps of the cathedral, 15 mth old inside, stumble up to the sign-in book (what do they call those) start writing my name and look at the 2 names directly ahead of me... fuck it's sk and rk? look ahead and there's yourself not 2 feet away. blow me down with a feather. it's kilbey i say to the wife. go in and we find a nice safe spot out of the way where I can make a quick exit if needed with the littl'un, when i look over to my left and there you are about 6 persons across. i was the one to your right who kept getting up with the toddler, trying to get him off to sleep. i forgive you if you didn't notice or don't remember now. it was quite a moving ceremony in some ways, though not without some surreal moments. never been to a funeral i liked.

Anonymous said...

As a person that loathes the Democrats, let me state the opinion that there will be no more Bushes in the White House - certainly not "Jeb".

I wont denegrate the man's character (as I don't know him) but he does not have what it takes to gain popular acceptance. Even if he did, the sheer hate for his family would eliminate him from the running.

In the end it doesn't matter. The Republicans and Democrats are the same people with the same goals but with different labels, and both lying to the public about their intentions in order to get their 'market share' of the votes. Neither party is good for the United States, the world or liberty in general.

oh, the bit where sally talked about sharing a flat in london with grant, and being visited by nick cave, sundry other birthday party members, and the moodists (dave graney and clare moore etc.). it was reported in the sydney morning herald that they were visited by nudists! is wot my wife heard too at the time she reports, she says there were quite a few laughs. i can almost imagine all the nudists in london filing into that little bed-sit to visit grant on a sunday afternoon for scones and earl gray.

Thanks for the lovely words about Grant and the update on his funeral. I read about the "nudists" in the paper! Thanks for clarifying.

In a previous blog, you mentioned that Grant knew Angela Carter personally. I love Angela Carter. I knew Grant for 26 years, and I never knew that! Please fill me in on everything you know about how and where he knew her. Wish I could ask him myself. . .

My husband Robert Vickers went to the funeral, but I could not. We had dinner in a Burmese restaurant in NYC with Jack Frost years ago.

Jeb Bush. I remember in the late 1990's when potential candidates were being discussed Dubya wasn't the Bush mentioned since he was considered to much of a fuck up to have a chance. Jeb was the Bush golden boy, but he wasn't expected to be ready to run in 2000.

Apparently, money and connections can buy excellent spin doctors, and well, elections too, as we have all seen. And suddenly useless fuck up boy is useless fuck up president.

Good afternoon Mr. Kill-bee and thanks for sharing with us about Grant’s funeral. And while we’re reminiscing about his life and beautiful music, thought I’d share a cool story. While you were talking about the Frosties days ago, it occurred to me that carefully hidden in my video cassette archives from the early 90s is a once-in-a-lifetime performance of you two stunning blokes on late night American TV! The tape is dated 4/91 (a good solid 15 years ago!) and it’s from some old Leno-esque type program entitled “Late Night with Rick Dees”. A few days ago, I thought perfect timing, and dug for the tape, brushed off the dust and plunked it into the machine, after many years of not watching this one, and the tape fortunately has survived the years with the viewing and audio quality nearly pristine and intact! Only one song was necessary in this beautiful acoustic performance, and nearly my favorite JF tune of all JF tunes “thought that I was over you” with it’s sublime lyric: “can’t you hear the seraphim singing/devil’s beating on his drum.” Your voices and strings blended together so seamlessly, so effortlessly and so beautifully! The obligatory host/guest banter followed and Mr. Grant with his unassuming demeanor, identified himself as Jackie and Mr. Kill-bee as Frosty! Crowd laughs, of course, and I recall SK the lovely and sparkly vest you were wearing that evening...and believe it or not folks, I managed to capture this gem after falling asleep in front of the tube, and only to wake up as Team JF were walking onto the stage amidst raucous studio audience whistling and clapping...and better yet, not having a clue that these boys were going to be televised at 1:30 AM!! No kidding! So people, the question in my mind still remains: how did I manage to have the telly on the RIGHT STATION that evening and a tape ready to flip into the VCR?!! So just a little thank you SK for that incredible ditty forever preserved in my video bank. Love, jl P.S. And it was only a few months ago I was listening to one of Grant’s promo CDs Present & Past (1983-1995) and thinking damn, this is such good, good stuff...

Hello again Mr. Kill-bee and fiendss, of course. SK, I'm so elated to hear you've tapped into this magical thing called acupuncture! I’m a staunch supporter of acupuncture and would recommend it to anyone to release the trapped energy in our bodies that poison pills can’t eradicate. After nearly four years of treatment for various allergies, and not to sound too noo-agey, these hair-like needles are capable of unlocking your body’s energy and restoring it to optimum health and you will begin to evidence improvements on many different levels, such as increased energy and awareness. I really needed to feel it to believe it, and within 24 hours after my first treatment, something was RADICALLY different in my body: no daily sniffling, congestion or sneezing…it was zapped out to pasture people! Once I got the hang of the level of relaxation that occurs during treatment, I thought HOB would be a perfect backdrop to one of my sessions (as my acupuncturist always plays soothing music in the background) and I drifted off into lovely land, and fell into some seriously deep meditation by “tranquility”! :-) In the end as she was removing the needles said, “That music was beautiful! And who by chance, is that man singing? He has such a lovely voice!” (No kidding here, SK...) Me replying: “Oh some great band out of Australia I’ve been listening to for years and years, the Crunch, have you heard of em? (she said no) And the gentleman crooning, well that’s SK…”:-) love, jl

Hi Steve -

Condolences to you and Grant's family and friends. I, too, have felt a deep sense of loss since I got the news last Saturday.

If you're intersted in checking out more Vonnegut, I'd like to recommend 'Welcome To The Monkey House'. It's a collection of great short stories - including one about a very high stakes game of chess. There's also a very touching story about Kurt meeting his first wife.

too many interesting topics of late to respond to here save for this. ran into a bunch of aussies in a bar thurs.
i mentioned the church and a guy said "isn't the lead singer dead ? " i said no. well, anyway some of the guys were nice and i was going to show them around the local lukewarm spots. alas, their hunkish leader told me to get out of their car. nice little story that followed on the heels of me being incarcerated for 3 days. anyways, i'm nonplussed and keeping the uninformed up to speed, not that it matters.

Kurt's amazing - recommend anything by him - slaughterhouse 5, breakfast of champions and galapagos are especially wonderful. He's funny, scathing, insightful...all underscored by a humanistic philosophy. He makes sense - thank fuck there's someone like him when it seems the rest of the world has gone crazy.

Glad you made it to the funeral. It seems that Robert and Sally's speeches were the highlight, whilst the priest took some liberty with Grant's lyrics. Grant meant alot to the people of Brisbane... he was so much more than a singer/songwriter, he was friend. And he really did touch people on a personal level. I'm glad the people of Brisbane could pay their respects.

Hey! Very Nice Blog! Just thought I'd tell you a website I found where you can make extra cash.
It's not available everywhere, so go to the site and put
in your zipcode to see if you can find something. I found something and make
and extra $900 a month!

Interesting note: Kurt Vonnegut wrote that he'd like his epitaph to read:
"The only proof I need for the existence of God is music."
