fluctuations in colour and time may occur

good morning you voracious fiendss
youve come hanging round
looking for a blogfixx
hanging round on the internet
ready to wolfe down my words
(secretly coated in an invisible
tasteless odourless alkaloid
that will cause addiction after
prolonged exposure)
im sittin in the caf
wearing my negative uninvited like the crowds
t shirt
i have haad some good gnus though
elli herself rang this morning
chatted for 15 minutes
feeling itchy n restless
maybe god willing
she can return home soon
pretty much back to her olde
elli-ish self
but i have actually learned a lot
about her in the last 2 weeks
she displayed constant fortitude
despite everything
and i KNOW
she did better than i woulda done
when i was 14
i appreciate yer concern people
i really do
this is beyond the masks of society
this stuff makes you need other people
and im glad you were there
for me
in the way that you were
luddite that i am
i fume about computers
yet i owe so much to the intahnett
and the way people who liked what
i/we did
could kinda focus themselves
and think its great
and i think its great
that i dont have to wait weeks n weeks
to find out what YOU GUYS think of the things we did
before it was just the critics
(n their little fucking axes theyre grinding)
but now
its instant
im grateful for that

doing some last minute werk on basement tapes
with peter k n jorden bee
hey jb is one talented nice cat
he mixes us live in sydney
he plays guitar on ultc n bwtb
he engineers vox n mixes bwtb
he sings b vox on ultc
and
a true gentleman n scholar
a true fifth member of the hchcur
also david trump
another bouy genius
he has mixed played sung n written n recorded
with us for years n years
hes mixed ultc (in 2004)
its a great sounding record
its beefy
its smooth
its got lotsa subtle things
thatll take ya a while to pick up on

i loved the review in lunarpuke6
old guys who took 2 many drugs one
except i think to myself
cos the dude is saying this ones like heyday
n this ones like blah blah blah
and im thinkin'
but you must be pretty old yerself
if things are remindin ya of heydey
anyway
we getting some goode reviews so far
so far...
of course
some little matt snow is out there
as we speak
sittin in his flat in wapping
the eggy stains still congealing on his shirty
reaching for his laptop
(even tho he no longer has a lap)
and having cause to hit the vitriol button hard
but you all know the problems we rock artists face
in 2006
there are restrictions
we wanna work within the restrictions
yet simultaneously slowly open out
i think ultc does that n more
its the first hchcru that makes me wanna dance
its brash its smooth its stupid its wise
its primitive its sophisticated its cerebral
its sexy
come on what more can you ask for
you gonna be playin this disc for a lot longa
than mosta the othah stuff you shell out for this year
itll keep revealing things to ya for years
i put em in there for ya
slow release
fluctuations over the years
sometimes itll be different
anyway
thats it
love on ya

Glad Elektra is doing better!!!

I can't wait to receive ULTC - I just got an email that it's shipping!! I'm glad to hear the reviews have been so good.

Must be great to receive feedback from the fans instead of just the critics!!

Anonymous said...

yes yes, fans reviews would feed the ego quite nicely. a bit like preaching to the converted.

still, as much as I fail to understand why the lurch are ignored by the media, im kinda glad that we are lucky enough to be part of this little exclusive club with impeccable taste (in music at least)... im kinda glad noone else gets it.

hey sk, wrapped about ek's news..good on ya all.

Thanks for sharing the wonderful news on Elektra. The Kilbey clan has certainly occupied a lofty position in my thoughts over the past couple of weeks. Continued best wishes for you, Elektra, and Miranda...

I agree. ULTC is an absolutely fantastic offering. More wonderful on each listen. Thanks to all of you for creating this masterpiece. I certainly hope it does well for The Church. All of you certainly deserve it.

Love as always.

Dearest SK, today started badly, got in car, threw on ULTC, sang "Easy" at top of lungs driving to work, arrived happy and had forgotten about badness, changed the paradigm of the day, made me think, in this world of Spin/Advertising/Media/Cross-Promo/Pop-Fluff/Nonsense, here's some music beautifully crafted, with hooks and lyrics to scream along to if that is your wont, and behind it all a bunch of musicians that still CARE, that still have the fire in the belly and the URGENCY to make something that stands aside from the dross, and maybe that's what made me happy, or maybe it was that darned pesky addictive rolling roiling clean white-top crystalline wave of a song called Easy, and plenty of others to boot on ULTC, that pulled at the corners of my mouth like an invisible fish hook that eliminated the shocking karma and set up the day on a pleasurable plane...you can't buy that sort of impact, right? And you know that, SK, you've known it all along...so this is just to say.........thanks.

Sk,

Invite some ULTC comments, have some of the group post their reviews, and take what you like from their observations and make a bloggy entry about it. It could be a compendium of commentary, a review culled from thoughts flying through the air, assembled as something whole.

THAT kind of a review would be head and shoulders above anything from a sneering critic who cannot interact with good music anymore.

Best wishes to your family, kind thoughts, can't wait to get my copy--

In case people don't already know, the Church Merch people are pros and the stuff you order from them--top notch.

1. Glad to hear things are looking betta for elli. We'll keep praying.

2. ULTC is f'cking brilliant. Nicely done. It seems to be in my top 2 or 3 churchy albums of all time, very solid, but what do I know, Pharmakoi is still one of my faves and for some dumb reason Forget Yourself does little for me while Besides Yourself has that same lovely groove that Pharmakoi has.

3. Please don't eva say you want to dance. It leaves a disturbing image in my mind LOL.

cheers,

first listen to ultc after basement show and yes, I do believe another triumph for the band. sk is correct it keeps giving up secrets each listening. Block gathers, gathers momentum. my favourite at present. The alternate version on the ep is worth a listen, the synth(?)is more audible, gives a liquid space sound.

captainmission said...

Steve, i'm so happy that the elf princess is feeling better that's fantastic and the worlds much better for it.

Yeah, ultc is a beautiful thing, i've never been able to chose a fave church cd but i really feel that if i had to make that awful choice it would be this one, but then i'm hardly objective.

i hope that blistering soundcheck version of Block is recorded somewhere, that was sizzlingly hot and i really felt blessed to have seen it.

and fuck it was loud!! no wonder ye're deaf me old lad.

Glad to hear Ellie is getting back to normal, Steve. I received a brown paper package in my letter bo today which contained Block, Jammed, Back With Two Beasts and Earthed/Ninevah (although you already autographed my original copy of Earthed in the basement of the Globe!). I'm listening to Jammed as I write this. Wow! It's certainly a lot more "energetic" than Bastard Universe. I like BU but eleven minutes into "The Sexual Act" and I can say I'm pleased with my purchase!

I'm waiting now for the mailman to deliver my copy of ULTC, one of the ones I guess you signed under duress at the restaurant the other night.

Thank you for the music, Steve. May you and The Church reign a thousand years!

brad armpit said...

Alright, Steve. Brilliant to see E's making the comeback! Good on her.

And hey man, you 've done it once again with ULTC. Real toggle action indeed. Ultimately I'm just proud to have as a favourite band one that uses a line such as "just like the damned, you say 'hell yeah'" in a chorus. Inspired, SK, inspired ;) And those guitars on Easy - gadzooks! You gents haven't lost a step lo these years, hey?

Thanks for the beauty.

My copy of ULTC has only briefly left the CD player since Manchester Lane and that is only to play Tin Mine (which won't ever be flogged on ebay!)

Glad all is going well with Elektra.

I've just ordered ULTC - so I should get it by the end of the week. Hey, I still remember Heyday like it was yesterday (Already Yesterday) and I still love it.
Your music has always made me want to Move/Dance - I find most traditional Dance Music something of an oxymoron anyway.
Don't worry too much about Matt Snow - he writes (ha,ha) for a football mag these days - best place for him - he's found his true vocation at last.
Great to hear that Elli's on the mend.

Glad to hear Elektra is feeling much better. You know this kind of stuff will only make her stronger over the years. If she handles this as cool-headed as she is, I imagine the waves of life will only bounce off of her. She's one you can set your mind at ease with, and that's even before she hits her teen stride! Warm thoughts and best wishes for a speedy recovery for both her and Miranda...

ULTC - what can I say? Another sparkling facet to an already blinding crown! Thanks to you and the boys for the continuum.

man, that is one of the things i have loved most about the church for all these years now...
these songs DO change day to day
and year to year...
they grow with you
and you with them...
why, it's almost like magic...
but there's no such thing as magic,
is there??? silly boy...
anyhoo, ultc is quite fucking good... i don't get why people have to say something sounds like this album or that time or whatever... it sounds like something new from the chchru, dammit... new experiences, new translations... ahhh, pure chance, day 5, BLOCK!!!, EASY!!!... ah shit, i'm gonna go all gushy... no need, you get it, i love it... speshally that dubby sound on song to go... and the best use of a vocoder, EVER... fucking beautiful... hmmm, freaky conclusions has a sweet vocoder too, maybe they're tied for first...
most importantly, great to hear good news for you and yours... kids will amaze you with the people they become...
in the nest, futures hatch
it's such a lovely thing to see...
love ya man...

Funny how the kids take it, hm? I've spent a good chunk of my childhood plugged to interesting gear, and being cuuut in twooo... and never really worried. Left this for my parents. All the best for the Kilbettes. Aren't those the two and only Twillies from that funny song..Wishing you nerves, strong like the strings on your bass.

While we're at it - I'll be spending the next months looking for aural easter eggies, the ones you guys hid for me between the layers of bliss and byooty. It's incredibly deep and visceral, so textured that I think I can touch the music. The Church have released my favourite Church album.

All the best,

Ah Steve,
For 22 years your music and lyrics have often brought tears to my eyes - now your blog is making me cry! I am sooooooo glad to hear that Ellie is feeling better. She sounds like a strong girl - and you know that prayers, good thoughts, wonderful energy continues to be sent your way for you and the whole family. I had to take my mom to the hospital this morning for a pretty serious test - but all is well. Father, daughter, mother, husband, son, wife, brother, sister friend, cat, dog,...this life is oh so fragile isn't it - alas...your beauty, your words, your music has always been there to get me through some pretty dark times and I am glad we can be there for you, in whatever tiny, bloggish way. Oh - and now I'm going to get yer CD! An early b-day present for me!

It's been said a million times before but I just wanted to echo the thoughts of my fellow church followers. ULTC is a sen-fucking-sational album. I must admit that even though After Everything and Forget Yourself had rare moments of classic Church within, the albums themsleves didn't exactly give me wood. But ULTC is in a league of it's own. It's one of those rare albums that you just can't get sick of. I play it about 3 times a day at work and have it permanently in the car CD player. Even my kids (girl 5 and boy 2) sing "easy baby" and "I said hi, I said hello, I said where'd you want this little .... song to go". I can't quite say the album sounds like any particular album of the past, as it's more like a re-invented experimental Church release. Sure there are moments of the classic "jingle jangle" sound of the early 80's in "Easy" and "Unified Field" while "She'll Come Back For You Tomorrow" sounds like it would easily fit into MWP's Spirit Level album. "Block" is a rambling epic fast becoming one of my all time fave Church songs and it's great to hear PK behind the mic for a stunning performance of Never Before. The last two minutes of that song is unbelievably powerful and the louder played the better. Although "Day 5" clocks in at over 5 minutes, it feels like it could carry it's own for at least 10 minutes and still remain fresh and interesting. "Song To Go" I love. The vocal distortion at the end is gold and every bit as good as the amazingly fantastic song from BWTB "Pantechnicon". That song in itself worthy of being included on this very fine album.

Apologies for banging on so long about this album but unfortunatley most of my friends aren't blessed with a good ear for music like I am, and rather than go mad telling myself how good it is, what better forum to share my thoughts than this. I honestly think I'll be hard pressed to hear another CD in my lifetime that I adore as much as this one.

PS. I'm the geezer at the Manchester Lane show who said "Stevie" to you as you made your way to the stage. When you stopped and looked at me, I wasn't sure if you were going to headbutt me or have me ejected. Later in the show when you were banging on during one of the encores, you said that you didn't like being called Stevie. I apologise for that, Mr Kilbey.

Looking forward to the next tour in August I believe. National Theatre in Melb? Same venue as the Priest = Aura tour. Can't wait.

Word.

never ever thought i'd hear 'already yesterday' live, so imagine my surprise when ya played it the other night, that song has some weird significance for me as it's one of the main reasons i ended up in australia, 'avalon across the water.'
of course there was beautiful girl in the mix but basically that line huanted me and when the girl said she came from a place called avalon i knew i was going with her, now 20 years later i know what a special part of the world i ended up in, and how right that move was, coincidence or not, it always fills me little heart with a certain joy when i hear that song, just thought i'd share that, melencholy sentementalist that i am.
hope you're well steve

waiting impatiently for ultc. Haven't received the "shipped" email yet, but with Marty on the case doing the shipping I have faith... (he knows how to do that stuff, right???)

glad to hear the reviews are so great. from the snippets I've heard ultc sounds beautiful. the block ep is outstanding - gets better with every listen - like all of the choich's stuff, really. i keep listening cause you guys don't talk down to anyone. i like uncovering the layers, i like looking up the references i don't know and smiling over the ones i do.

saw the band's myspace page. will be directing friends there for a listen.

it seems that, after a rough patch or two way back, you're in a great place in your journey, steve. i'm really happy to see it, happy for your increasing success, and inspired by your work. looking forward to seeing where it all leads :-)
